Like Kazuma said in an earlier episode is that Ayano is a distant cousin of his and it is possible that they could be together since it's too far to actually have strong bloodlines with eachother :)

Apparently after the author died I think they decided that there wasn't enough of his notes to finish the story as the author originally intended, and they didn't feel anyone else could give it a satisfactory ending, so it ended as is.
@winkirat thats pretty simple he just really doesn't care about the Kannagi hes really only wiling to protect the ppl he really does care for like Ayano and Ren and Misao b/c she protected him when he was a kid from the bullies hence the beginning of this episode its kinda far off to think that someone like him would feel responsible for her problems but in truth it might be part of a second chance to do what he failed to do before as you prob already know lol
