    In an age when women were possessions, God took notice of and specifically addressed the fears and needs of Hagar and Sarah. He is the God who sees us.

    I’m borrowing my God shot from John Bevere’s “The Awe of God,” who shows how Abraham fears God, and how God honors this reverence by revealing His plans to him. God didn’t reveal His plans to Lot, who chose to live in Sodom, with those he must have known were wicked, but where he expected his wealth to increase. Abraham fears God, bows before Him, obeys the covenant immediately and completely with the circumcision of hundreds in his household. And God responds by revealing His will. Fearing God doesn’t put distance between us; it’s the requirement for intimacy with the Father.

    I love how God found Hagar when she was alone, abused, and pregnant (Gen 16:7). How tender is our God. He is the God who sees us (Genesis 16 :13). I also love the reminder that nothing is too hard for the Lord in Genesis 18:15.

    My Godshot for today is this. 10 years have passed since the covenant that God made with Abram, and nothing happened since then. Or for the next 13 years, until God showed up when Abram was 99 years old. So, completely, 23 years have passed. But God remembered his promise. If I were Abraham, I would certainly start to grow a little skeptical of all of this. Ripe old age + no answer from God whatsoever about a promise made 23 years ago? But God still remembered it, and fulfilled it. So without taking matters into my own hands, I will trust God and his plans for me, in places where my efforts could not yield any effort.

    The story of Hagar and Sarah teaches me to question everything in our culture to discern if it is obedient to God or merely seems normal and acceptable. Sarah was going along with her culture when she gave Hagar at to Abraham and so much conflict and heartache resulted. Knowledge of God's Word is necessary for us today to avoid making the same mistake.

    There's a reason Hagar was treated harshly. She despised her mistress because now she was having a child by Abraham when Sarah couldn't. I believe this caused her to feel like she was going to supplant her mistress and be elevated over her. When the angel of the Lord told her to return and submit to Sarah's authority, she was humbled and that attitude got adjusted.

    • @Dudeow2

      Absolutely- this often gets overlooked that there was a reason for this. Your observation for the reason why Hagar despised Sarai is really helpful though- thank you!

      Thank you, came to the comments to say this and was hoping someone had. It's an important detail that really shouldn't be left out.
      And a little note to add, in Ch. 16 Sarai initially went to Abram first regarding how Hagar was looking down on her/treated her. But Abram told her "Behold your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.", hence Sarai casting Hagar out.

      But it was Sarah's idea in the first place for hagar tp sleep with abraham. Didn't she realize hagar would become pregnant. That was the whole idea so abraham would😢 have a child

    • @torixa371
      @torixa371 5 місяців тому +3

      Well think about it. If your sister/daughter was a slave and forced to bore a child, how upset would you be?
      God didn't tell Sarah to abuse Hagar like that.
      Which is why he sent the angel to comfort her in her time of sorrow.

  • @ivanronald

  • @odifek
    @odifek 9 місяців тому +14

    I learnt a lot from today's reading. It's really packed.
    After the incidence with Hagar and Sarah, it would appear that God was silent on Abraham for about 13 years. Then in chapter 17 when he was 99, God came to him with a sharp rebuke.
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬
    [1] When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,
    God expected better from Abraham. Nonetheless, He still showed up to fulfil His promise.
    May we not make a mistake that would cause a delay on the promises of God in our lives!
    Again, in chapter 18, Abraham recognised the three men, that they were not ordinary people. He invited them and entertained them. Following this, a concrete timeline was given (or reassured) for the promised child.
    It's important to be sensitive in the Spirit. So we do not miss an Angel the Lord is sending our way.

    My God shot was His behavior in regards to Sodom. He's God, going to Sodom personally wasn't necessary. He even wondered about telling Abraham, and patiently agreed that He would spare it for only a few righteous people. We read it before He speaks to Noah, when He made the decision to bring the flood. Our continual sin grieves Him, just as much as I think the judgement does.

      Isaac has Jacob, and Jacob becomes Israel, who is literally the father of the nation of Israel. We can all trace our ancestry to Noah, but Israelites trace their heritage to Noah’s son Shem (the Semites; thus, those who hate them are anti-Semitic).

    • @thatMimosaGrove

      I'm happy to say that DNA analysis is able to establish with certainty that the vast majority of Jews of modern Israel (as well as the Jews around the world) really are descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! Remember that the Bible prophesied that the Jews would be scattered among the nations but that they would not be lost among the nations, and eventually, they would be restored to their homeland - and it has happened/is happening! The "Khazar theory," which I see everywhere now, especially on UA-cam, was developed by people predisposed toward anti-Semitism (unfortunately lots of Christians are in this group 😢) who seized upon the work of Arthur Koestler in the 1970s and exaggerated his claims. Yeah, I know they claim to have science on their side, but keep in mind that there are also "scientists" who tell us the Jews were never in Israel to begin with. I'm pretty sure God disagrees! 😄

    I have to push back on this one. God was not merciful to Hagar, he foretold and cursed her progeny as enemies of the people of God, and enemies of God because they would have to reject Him to hate His people who call on His name. The Lord said an enemy has sown weeds with the wheat, let them grow together and at the harvest gather the wheat to the storehouse and BURN the weeds. God has foreseen and declared that those souls born unto Hagar from her complacency in adultery and pride in physical fruitfulness are going to end up in the everlasting fires of hell. Jesus came to redeem ALL of fallen man, by his passion and resurrection and release of the Holy Spirit He made a way for ALL souls, including the gentiles to be born again through baptism by the obedience of his apostles going out and making disciples of ALL nations. God said he would make Ishmael a NATION. On that was doomed to hell but after Christ given and open door and opportunity to be not enemies of the people of God but MADE into a disciple through baptism and catechism. If all weeds were promised heaven there would be no need for Jesus, but Jesus is for all creation and the salvation of all men. Hagar and God is not an example of God's mercy but of His sovereignty. What Jesus did on the cross taking all of the abuses of the enemies of God's people is His mercy. Hagar, like Cain was allowed to continue living on earth and not perish immediately but that was the limit of His mercy. Being able to have lots of children who will end up in hell is not a mercy or a consolation it is a curse.

      I actually felt bad for Hagar, she was punished for doing what her servants told her to do which was to sleep with Abram. I know I’m not God and he knows better than me, I can’t help but to think that Sarai should’ve been punished for coming up with this “brilliant” plan.

    • @DonZimmerman52
      @DonZimmerman52 9 місяців тому +13

      God was merciful to Hagar: He saw her, and she named Him “the God Who sees me.” He didn’t curse her descendants; He foretold the choices He knew they would make by not following Him. God is love, and love allows choice, even if that choice is sin and turning away from Him.

    Oh how convenient it is to have our interpretive values of things that happened long long ago in lands far away. Did Sarah consciously believe giving her servant--as a wife--to Abraham as sin? Was it wrong? No where does God identify these relationships are wrong. Take care as we interpret Scripture through our cultural lens.

    PLEASE edit these videos in an appropriate format for UA-cam. I'm sure you care about marketing and how many people they pull in, so you would definitely retain more viewers if a) the intro wouldn't play in the beginning of EACH freaking video, or b) if you absolutely must have it there, it shouldn't be longer than 6 seconds. Like this, the series is completely unwatchable.
    It really just shows that you absolutely don't know how to market your videos for UA-cam. Or, why not make a separate video where you do each chapter at once without these terrible and unnecessarily long intros? They don't even contain any information, just music and it does take away from the content and in turn, you are only hurting yourself and your ad revenue.
