I loved Joseph but understand the trade as it was necessary to free up cap space to resign Pinto. I wish Mathieu the best during the rest of his career.

I think the draft appears decent. Hope Ullmark breaks the trend of goalies struggling once here. Otherwise I think he has lost every trade, we getting fleeced. And the FA signings aren’t going to push the needle or change much. So far, the team appears to be worse off than last year.
I don't think I'd say we're worse off than last season. Piece for piece our changes since Staios took over look as follows:
Ulmark >> Korpi
Jensen < Chychrun, but fills positional need better
Amadio ~ Joseph
Perron ~ Tarasenko
Gregor~Kelly
We also dropped Kastelic, Kubalik, and Branstrom, but Staios still has some time to tweak that fourth line and third pair. PMID this year we actually have the cap room for Pinto. I think the team is better on the strength of Ulmark, but even if the skaters aren't they are probably at least harder to play against.
Glad you are optimistic. I am not. Ottawa needs to figure out how to develop young goalies. The trade for vets after one good year hasn’t worked out, so I am pessimistic about Ullmark. Jansen is major downgrade, and Perron is not on par with Taransanko. With Norris being to fragile Taransanko was needed. As long as Ottawa is non competitive, it’s hard to keep talent or get FA on cap friendly contracts. So they overpayed again on vets in FA when Pinto should have been the priority. Just my thoughts.

@@johndavis906are you saying Ullmark has only had 1 good year? He has like 5 consecutive seasons with a .913 save percentage or better including on bad Buffalo teams. As for Perron vs Tank both have 41 goals in the past two seasons and Perron has 103 total points to Tarasenko's 105. Neither is particularly strong defensively. Sounds like the definition of comparable to me. The contracts they were awarded in free agency 2*4 vs 2*4.75 seem to suggest they are comparable as well.

@@SENSTALK Was hoping we would lock him down long term and get good value. He’s a stud. 5 for 5 would have been a steal. Now this gives him a chance to leave after 2. Retaining good players who actually want to play here is our greatest challenge. Matt Jo at least wanted to be here.
They'll get a bag of pucks for Joseph because they never get value.
The real value is the cap relief
This trade was awful. Faska cost 0 to unload. He's much worse than Joseph, and he's more expensive.
The Sens had no leverage, we were up against the cap and had to sign pinto. Much different than Dallas’s situation
@SENSTALK I wouldn't say its much different, it's a cap dump but one GM did it properly. I do agree that the Stars GM knew Ottawa was desperate but you just don't make the deal with them. Another team would have taken Joseph without having to give up a pick.
