  • In this video I'll show you how to defeat Chinese disc detainers by exploiting one of their design defects. These are tough to pick open, but DO have a weakness.

When I was enlisted in the US Army, we got some really nice high-security pad-locks; hardened shackles, hardened steel bodies and cylinders.
The down-side was that about 2 dozen of the locks were keyed 'flat'!
Yup, every notch on the key was the same level!
Each lock had a different profile, to be sure, but the profiles were essentially a straight line with tiny 'teeth'!
We sent them back after I was able to pick every one of them with a small screw-driver...

That's extremely unfair towards these chinese locks - a Master lock is defeated, literally, in ONE SECOND! Check it out (another bosnianbill video): ua-cam.com/video/nsJZ_kKjXcE/v-deo.html

A lot of love for this video. My local town council uses similar Chinese padlocks on all of their so called 'No-Entry' areas and I've managed to raise a few eyebrows by sharing this with them!

***** The funny thing is that in my area, about 70% of the locks I've seen are using this locking mechanism.

This is great! I bought one of these on Japan thinking it was nice but after trying this exploit it has proven to be vulnerable as well. The difference was the inside on mine was brass not plastic but it came apart just as easy.

Great information on disk detainer locks and the range of security provided by them. Most people just buy what the package tells them is "High Security" and then lock there most expensive belongings and toys only to find the lock on the ground and there stuff gone. We need videos like this to teach the public there is a price to pay for buying cheap locks before they find there stuff gone. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, lets hope that the lock company's watch it and learn to improve there locks.

Good day Bill. I am new to the sport and love your videos, I am learning so much. When I was in the Military 35 years ago we used Abloy padlocks (40 or 50 mm I think) to secure some of our equipment. The shape of the key always intrigued me, and after watching your Videos, I suspect that it is a Disc Detainer type. I don't have a Disc Detainer pick yet, I guess it's next on my shopping list. Anyway, while in the Philippines last December, I picked up some cheap Chinese locks to practice with, and one happens to be a Disc Detainer type. I used your special flat blade pick to open it exactly like in this video. After dropping all 5 discs and the locking bar on the floor, I even managed to put all 5 discs back in the plastic carrier in the correct order and orientation, with the locking bar and slide it all back together. I managed to compress the cap spring to finish off the reassembly, and the lock still works. Thank you .

Not yet, but I only have the military issue brass/copper ones and they are probably too stiff to open a cruciform Your timing is perfect tho, because I got in a really nice cruciform last night to experiment with. I'll go to Walmart & find some cheap, flexy .22 bore brushes. I'll get some nylon ones too to experiment with. If it works, I'll demo it when I SPP the lock.

ACK! Plastics for lock detention?! C-razy. Basically you can hold a lighter under the lock and heat up the guts and then with a gloved hand just yank the shackle and the balls would deform the softened plastics.

there is something faster its called Bolt cutters, i know as that is all was left of my lock (just a bolt cutted padlock) as my bike got pinched at college Very long long time ag o(the new bike the news paper got me after that followed me into the collage every time after that and they did not stop me,, now i look at it it would of been bad PR for the collage if they did stop me so i guess its why they allowed it but did not tell me if i was allowed or not)
any way these things will not be immune to a bolt cutter. all the fussing with screwdriver and pulling it out when you can just cut it with a small bolt cutter in 5 seconds (and most of that time is getting it out to put it over the lockbar) and be gone with the bike. even cheap D-Locks only require shock to brake them (one hit hammer and a large flat head screwdriver) most newer Real bike locks have 2-4 layers of protection you cant saw them and its nearly imposable to cut them (unless you have a circular saw but it make a lot of nose and even then Plastic or kevlar might even Jam the disk)

When I saw the plastic retainer, I got an idea...
Use a metal hook to pull on the body of the lock, and just use a blow torch to heat the lock. As soon as the plastic melts, the lock should pop open... I'm guessing the lock should be blown open in about 30 secs.

What was that pick in the case at 7:48? Can it do others besides granit locks? It looks like it might be a good little addition to a starter kit, I especially like how you can decode the lock, and see which pin you're on. I like that a lot.

  • @DSSlocksmiths

I tried popping the cap out of one of these and it just snapped the tool. Possibly over hardened, or the cap was better on that brand. However, two hits from a cold chisel into the side of the lock popped it off - it went straight in through that thin pot metal sidewall!
Torquing works well. I've used that on the few I haven't been able to pick "on the door".

leon vdd Perhaps we just come from different backgrounds -- I assure you that's not a religious thing in my neighborhood. Even the great atheist polemicist Christopher Hitchens routinely started his debates by saying "Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, comrades, friends, brothers, sisters, for coming." I mean no more and no less than he did. It's a colloquialism I refuse to let religion have exclusive control over. If it's a turn of phrase that bothers you, I encourage you to ignore it. :) And smile -- the world is beautiful, Master Lock sucks, and variety is the spice of life. Cheers!

I believe the top part of the lock is called a "shackle", not a "hasp". A "hasp" is a slotted hinged metal plate that forms part of a fastening for a door or lid and is fitted over a metal loop and secured by a pin or padlock.

Thanks to make and share this interesting video, looks like it's very impressive. I even try to learn some picking skill just for fun. Back to the point, yes we know Chinese brand sometimes means cheap and low quality. because this stuff have their own customer, Fair to say, you take the comparison between "abus" and this so call "howdy" just like you compare with toyota coralla with lambor. totally different quality and differnt level of retail price. But on the other side, this is a good chance for those locker maker to get some important feedback from professional like you. Thanks again for your impressive video. cheers.

No matter how strong the lock is its also what it's attached too. I had a buddy who paid crazy money for a top lock for his shed. I said give me a crow bar and I'll pop that clasp off since it's only held on by wood screws in a 1 inch thick piece of wood. I don't have to touch the lock. I'd love to see some great high security ways to attach the locks to.

+The ScreenTeam: For Granits, www.taylorsecurity.com/abus-130/180-hasp-abus-130-180-granit-industrial-strength-hasps/ are awesome. For Diskus locks, www.taylorsecurity.com/abus-140/120-hasp-abus-140-series-steel-security-hasps/ are very good for shackles up to 7/16"

bosnianbill, late question(and I don't see it answered in the video or asked in the comments), but what stops the guts falling out of the quality locks like the Abus (you pointed out the hardened metal exterior and hasp, and the steel liner, but didn't point out how they prevent the screwdriver attack as far as I can see)- not a hint of criticism, just curiosity/stupidity on my part. Very informative and entertaining video as always (I've watched maybe ten percent of your output over the last week)

If you ever need replacement spacers for an expensive padlock that you're messing about with then just buy a cheap Chinese padlock, take it apart like Bill did and there's your replacement spare discs and spacers. (they might need filing to fit) That's what I did when I needed another spacer for my Abus 37RK/80 that had developed a sloppy stack after I reassembled it one time.

if the only thing holding the ball bearings in is plastic, can you pull the lock open with a little extra force and maybe open it without any tools?

I wonder if the plastic core could be melted with a small gas burner like you'd use to caramelise the sugar on a crème brulee?

Hi Bosnianbill, do you have any experience with Thai branded padlocks like IsOn as an example?
