  • The following video gives detailed instructions on removing a convertible top latch release motor from a 2005 645ci (E64) with a stripped or broken latch gear.
If the top is stuck in the closed position AND CANNOT BE OPENED MANUALLY then the latch gear is most likely broken or stripped. The original latch gear manufactured by BMW is made of plastic and is prone to cracking after years of use. Always replace a damaged latch gear with an upgraded steel replacement.

I really wish you lived here in Vegas. I need to shake your hand. My top literally stopped working at the beginning of the pandemic. Me and my wife was going to take a ride down on the strip when they sit it down to see and take pictures of how dead the Las Vegas strip look and low and behold the top did not work and hasn’t work since. I watched your video, took out my motor and opened it to see that the gear inside was broken. I IMMEDIATELY bought the gear using your link. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Quick question, when you would press the convertible button (open or close) , would you hear the motor but not see the result?
Or did the motor not run at all?

I could hear the motor run but nothing happened. When I took it apart, sure enough the plastic gear inside was in pieces. Now the only draw back with the repair was that the gear is a little louder but it’s a price I pay to have a working convertible top. The repair was HUNDREDS of dollars cheaper than what a dealer would charge. Was about an hours worth of labor done myself.

@@delo85 thank you for the quick reply. My motor isn’t audible so I think it’s the actually motor and not the gears that needs to be replaced

@@xoticbeats3602 Even the motor is a easy fix. Good luck to you. By the way you may be able to find a compatible motor on eBay or even the junk yard for a heck of a lot cheaper than a dealer. I would recommend swapping out that plastic gear though.
