Neymar has had quite the downturn in form in the last few years, after setting France alight with his performances in his first season with PSG. Recent comments have pointed to Neymar perhaps feeling unhappy playing football at this point, and saying that the 2022 World Cup may be Neymar’s last World Cup. In this video we’ll look at his transfer to PSG, the numbers that show his major loss of form, and try to figure out why he would say that he doesn’t “have the strength of mind to deal with football anymore.”

Not to diminish their merit, but they were also lucky to play in some of the greatest squads in history. Just take CR7's stats while playing for Manchester United and then in Real Madrid; even in his first Ballon D'Or winning season, when he was still in England, his goal average was lower than in most of his Madrid seasons. Messi, by his turn, has never been as mythical with the Argentinean jersey as he was with the blaugrana.
Of course, CR7 has always been fantastic even for Portugal (which has never had spectacular squads), and Messi's stats for Argentina are amazing - because both are fantastic players. But if they managed to achieve so many record-breaking seasons, it's owed almost as much to their exceptional teams as to their own skill.

My take on this: He's not having as much fun playing football in his professional career. From the moment he was discovered he was given so many expectations and out of fear of failing to meet those expectations he felt the pressure of having to deliver. He's like that kid whos parents found out he/she could play violin really well and then forced lessons and practice just so he/she could become the best violin player. The kid never got to enjoy playing violin, never got to try and enjoy the sounds that come from the instrument and thus ends up not liking the violin anymore. Neymar is that kid, so much pressure, and so much expectation that he actually doesn't enjoy football anymore.

To offer another Brazilian perspective, much of the polarised feelings we have towards Neymar is related to his personality and behaviour. During his first year as a pro, he earned a fame of having a penchant for histrionics on the pitch, and for thinking himself more important than anyone else - his first club, Santos, even fired their then coach because he had disagreements with Neymar. To make things worse, Brazil's media always had a bit of a fetish for him, which amplified both his mystique and people antipathy towards him. Unlike Argentineans, who are always overprotective of their own (even if they're on the wrong), Brazilians have no issue bashing a fellow countryman they think deserves the bashing.
Neymar did seem to mature a lot after that incident with his coach at Santos; around 2013 and 2014, even I liked him. But that image as a bratty guy with Peter Pan syndrome and a tendency for faking fouls never wore out, and Neymar didn't seem to take that well, lashing out and at times seemingly enforcing that image.

I do not mean to be disrespectful, but as an American (0 world cups to your 5) do you think the influence of Pele, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Sócrates, and Garincha has influenced the feeling about Neymar? He is a sublime footballer but is playing in an era of European international football dominance. I genuinely want to hear an outside perspective! I hope you have a good day friend.

    • @RevanSurik
      @RevanSurik 2 роки тому +40

@@idkjustchangingmyname7343 Not disrespectful at all :) Like it's mentioned in the video, Neymar came right after an era of star-studded teams; until 2006 Brazil's teams had legends like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, etc all playing together; more than that, it was common for most top clubs in the world to have at least one Brazilian among their main players (Ronaldo & Roberto Carlos in Real Madrid, Kaká, Cafu & Dida in Milan, Adriano in Internazionale, Ronaldinho in Barcelona, Lúcio & Zé Roberto in Bayern, Juninho Pernambucano in Lyon, Júlio César & Lúcio in Mourinho's Internazionale, etc). But ever since 2010, we haven't seen stars like that - Neymar is easily the only player, in the last ten years, to have a status similar to what the likes of Ronaldinho and Kaká had at their peak (Dani Alves and Marcelo could be seen as our generation's Cafu and Roberto Carlos, but Dani Alves & Marcelo never won WCs like Cafu and R. Carlos did).
I don't think the legacy of teams from the 60s, 70s or even 80s weighs down on Neymar or anyone of the current generation, though those who grew up watching that 2002-2009 Brazil teams (like myself) certainly look down on the current generation. We've always had a tendency of negatively comparing the current generation to the previous one (even the 2002 WC-winning team was shit compared to the 1998 team, at least until they won against Germany); likewise, the 2013 team was trash compared to the 2010 one, but now we think fondly of that squad that destroyed Spain in the Confederations Cup lol Personally I don't think we lack in talented players; but football today seems to rely too heavily in tactics and physicality whereas we still idolise flair and individual decision-making - two things that, nowadays, only Neymar out of all Brazilian players seem to embody.

Also, football in general has changes massively, even within the last 10-20 years. You don't see players attempting skills and tricks like you did in the 90's for instance, because today everything has to be effective and efficient. Even the likes of CR7 has conformed to this since his young years. Someone like Ronaldinho was far from the best when it came to output (goals and assists for instance), but he played in a time where his insane talent was appreciated. Today, most people have forgotten that football is entertainment in the end, which is ultimately why Neymar is treated so terribly, when in stead he should be regarded as a footballing great. Very sad to see.

Man, the dribblers back in the day were appreciated because they were efficient and valuable in the way they played. Maradona or Garrincha, to use a couple of the more widely known, used to dominate and win the games for their teams. Nobody hates, or dislikes, or poorly rates Neymar because of his flair, they do it precisely BECAUSE all that flair doesn´t translate to actually winning for the most part. Also, you seem to suggest he is underrated, but heck, for a player who has LITERALLY missed half of his club games in the past 4 seasons, also missing a Copa America in that span (the one Brazil won, btw), he is quite generously rated by many, including you seemingly, as one of the best of his generation mostly based on "potential".

There's no doubt Neymar is a generational talent for Brazil since the days of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho but more was expected from him to deliver silverware for club and country. He joined PSG to become the main man and win the Ballon D'or but now he's no where near close to winning it. Luka Modric won it in 2018 and if not for the pandemic then Robert Lewandowski would have won it last year.
The constant criticism, injuries and pressure must have taken a toll on him. The whole world was waiting on Neymar to overtake Ronaldo and Messi but Neymar is caught between two football landscapes. When I say landscapes I mean Ronaldo and Messi setting the bar high on what's a world class player and the arrival of the new generation talents in Mbappe and Haaland. Neymar is now at a crossroad of his career. To say he's not the 3rd best player in the world is incorrect. His first year and his third year at PSG is a testament how really good he is when he's in the zone.
I would be lying if I said I'm not disappointed that he never reached the heights of his Barcelona days. No way a flop at PSG but can't blame the fans for not seeing the Neymar of Barcelona. Great player overall but now forced to play second fiddle to Messi and Mbappe. Good video on Neymar and his state of mind.

Data analysis section was superficial. His average position has shifted from winger to 10/inside forward, so you would expect pass completions to drop and xg per progression or pass to rise. Using pure % for shot quality is also shorting the importance of shot volume differences and whether he is putting enough pressure on opposition via shots rather than movement as a winger.
This video really understated the storyline of Neymar being hobbled by bad injuries progressively. His decline in peak potential was pretty clear last year when Mahrez overshadowed him in both CL legs. That's way more likely to shorten his career longevity than the press and national pressure.

We spoke in the video of how his finishing and passing has fallen off a bit (a lot, when it comes to finishing), and some of the stats presented speak to that and corroborate a downward trend overall in his performances. Misplaced passes could be due to a slight positional change as you said, but his change to a more central position happened back in 2018-19, and he still was much, much better in all categories at that time (and scored/assisted a ton). If you're arguing that I should have used different metrics? You're probably right as I'm new to this and learning still. But the fall-off in both finishing and passing is noticeable to the eye _and_ in the numbers, which was the point of that section.
As for the injuries, I made sure to mention them a ton throughout the video so I thought that was implied as a major issue (I even specifically said he has only broken 30 appearances once for PSG). But if I lacked clarity there, then that's my bad! Thanks for the feedback.

    • @AatVandelay
      @AatVandelay Рік тому

@@RabonaTV Thanks for the measured response. My main point was that the data used for analysis here didn't demonstrate net footballing decline in either a storytelling or statistical power way. Some other attributes which could have been added to paint a fuller picture include changes in distance run, take on volume & completion accuracy, dispossessions. If you want to get fancy, we could also consider things like change in team npxg between the PSG managers to factor in effect of changes in tactics & manager, or add in agnostic team importance scores like GoalImpact/Shapley values to understand whether Neymar is becoming more important to his teams despite his overt dropoff in output.
One part of the analysis which was incorrect was the overuse of success percentages instead of looking at changes in raw # of attempts. This is called the law of large numbers, and means that the percentage only stabilizes and represents the true normal level for players when they are making that kind of play at high volume. For example, Cesc Fabregas's pass completion % and xG from passing is more indicative of his true level as a passer compared to Obi Mikel's. Same is true looking at take ons, shots taken, etc. There's also some soccer analytics arguments that raising volume for these has more positive impact than raising the success % (The Numbers Game by Chris Anderson covers this a lot, and there's some indirect discussion of it in another book called Soccermatics by David Sumpter), so it's possible that Neymar is becoming more dangerous despite the dropoff in success %.
I enjoy your videos and look forward to more in the future. If interested in incorporating more analytics in future videos, aside from those books I recommend Dan Altman, and the blog section of statsbomb. Conversations with people from Statsbomb, Opta, or analytics based writers in the Athletic like John Muller and Mark Carey might also bridge these sort of discussions further. I've loved some of your other collabs like the one with Manuel Veth of transfermarkt. If interested in bridging club finance analysis (totally unrelated to this thread), I'd recommend talking with @SwissRamble or this site called 'Off the Pitch'.

The problem is not Messi and Ronaldo. Messi and Ronaldo is a player on the own right. The problem why many talents flop and failed to reach their peak is because they always will be compared to someone greater in their time. Right now any footballer who will try to make their name will always compare to Messi and Ronaldo, and that's the problem. We as football fans, football watchers, football reviewers, critics or whatsoever, need to stop comparing players based on their achievement at any level. We just need to appreciate that we can watch them play before we die or are bored with football itself. Every football players want to make their name, they don't want to be compared with other players. So stop expecting them to carry your team or carry your country, or expect them to be someone because they will not become those players too. They are who they are and all we need to do is enjoy the game before it ruins to the ground with money.

We can only imagine the mental and physical wear he lives with. Always being the target of defenders (lots of people here in France thinks he "provokes defenders" with the way he plays), of the press and the fans, and living under constant pressure to overperform can be a huge burden, especially as he obviously approaches football in a childlike manner, trying to have fun and do cool things with the ball, as Ronaldinho did in his time, which is a blast to watch.

From someone who watches every PSG game, & a lot of other sports I really think everyone is missing the point. He is done playing for Brazil because of the amount of hours he spends on the plane flying back & forth for a couple of games of soccer. If you have the money Neymar has you can give a Fu€k about what anyone is saying about you. Basically don’t get paid for playing International football and the toll it takes on ones body is so much to be flying back & forth every month. His focus has always been Champions league for his club & so much respect goes to that. Look at any other sports league the players do not care about regular season it’s all about playoffs & championships. Everyone who played sports or does anything physical while being busy with family and other things will tell you the same thing. Also the numbers of him not scoring goals in recent isn’t a big deal because he’s contributing to winning in so many other ways. He’s so important to the attack and midfield he can literally determine when & when he wants to beat a battle
ps, if you’ve played soccer you will know how hard some of the things neymar attempts to do on the pitch, must appreciate this guy

Neymar is the definition of beautiful football. It is what football is all about, entertainment. Unfortunately, opposing teams were always told to cut and take Neymar down therefore Neymar uses diving as a way to keep that from happening or getting injured. Although sometimes its abit exaggerated.
And in Europe now, its all about tactics and speed. Showboating is normally taken as disrespect to the opponents. However, I see skills and showboating are essential in football. Its not only fun to watch, but you can control the pace of the game to your favour. Football is also a mental game, lots of emotions are involved and it is easy to frustrate opponents with skills and showboating.
Check out Orlando Pirates vs Tottenham, it proves that skills and showboating can disrupt European tactics easily but of course with proper organisation.

Messi handled the same critisism-shit from his fellow-Angentinians better for longer. Neymar dives too often, while even CR7 stopped diving since VAR is seeing everything. That´s not simply bad attitude (CR7), that´s now stupid... Neymar looks like a guy I could knock off with a single punch, while other normal colleagues of him look like wrestlers in comparison. He misses strengh, and while strengh is the main point for weight-lifters, it is still fundamental for any athlete, in any sport, except table-tennis maybe (and he looks like a table-tennis athlete more than like a footballer). Messi also proves, that it is possible to maintain unparalleled agility while becoming stronger and bulkier, and Neymar didn´t follow his example.

  • @Okhaz

Don't get me wrong, no human deserves the hate he probably gets on a daily basis. Still, Neymar always has chosen the money/fun path. That doesn't change the pressure from Brasil, but he could have had an easier life if he made different club choices.
The transfer to PSG made him the biggest target in world football. Politically and pressure wise. He obviously doesn't have the work ethics that Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski, and a lot of other players have.
He often searches conflicts, e.g. when there was that weird analogies he chose against Kimmich after they kicked Bayern out of the CL.
Like I said, I would never encourage hate against someone, but imo he made a lot of choices that make his life way harder than it had to be.

The problem is that Brazil and the world decided that Neymar was the second coming of Pele and The Lord himself back when he was a teenager. He was then massively indulged but also had massive expectation heaped on him. The reality is that he is a superb talent whose career has suffered from injury, but also from a sense of indulgence and hero worship. Paris was a really stupid decision. He went to a culture of over the top celebrity indulgence was the norm, and consistently high performance wasn't needed. Criticism is definitely over the top but he doesn't help himself with his social media flexing...if you're gonna do that then you better be a mentality monster like CR7...and he isn't that. He could have been one of the 🐐 but bad luck and bad decisions by him and his minders means he won't get there. But he's still superb and he has still had a very good career, we shouldn't forget that.

I don't like Neymar for his attitude, his diving or his move to PSG, which most certainly also hurt his image even more.
But constantly criticizing him for every single bit is nit ok. We have our fair share of pressure on football players over here in Germany too, but when Robert Enke (GK for Hannover and the national team) committed suicide due to the pressure that lastet on him when I was a teenager it left a mark on me. We also had the case of referee Babak Raffati who tried to take his live shortly before a match and was lucky to be found by his linesmen who wondered why he was late and eventually saved his live.
These news made clear to me that everyone is still human and constant criticism will eventually even hurt the strongest Individuum.

Neymar was closest to Messi in this generation but never fulfilled (may be not maintained) his potential

Even tho to be fair, Neymar played better than Messi in the recent Copa America, it just wasn’t enough bc you can always do better almost

Ney should not have gone to PSG period. That club is a salt club. That year when they were rope a doped by Barca proves it,,,and guess what, it was Neymar who slayed them in a Barca uniform.
