I'd like to emphasize the vigor tip. You might think, "I want to kill things quicker, so I'll level up strength or dex," but that's wrong. Your weapon scaling increases with upgrades, meaning that a +25 weapon will benefit more from a +1 increase in strength than a +0 weapon, so save your str, dex, int, and arc until you have a weapon that can benefit from them. Meanwhile, leveling up your vigor, endurance, and mind help you out right off the back.
I made this mistake a lot early on. I would watch professional speedrunners play the game and try to imitate them. After all, you want to learn from the best, right? They would make glass canon builds, putting nothing into vigor and running around in their underwear for that sweet, sweet dodge roll. But they could get away with that because they had every enemy memorized and would never get hit (and if they did get hit, they wouldn't get the world record speed run). You will get hit. A lot. As long as you can take the hit, you'll die less.
