Once you hear Nicko's parts isolated like this, you can really appreciate the groove and nuance he puts into every bar. Truly one of the most creative and skilled drummers of his time, no question.
One thing that gets lost in the recording with the rest of the band is how many ghost notes Nicko is playing throughout the entire song. Just listen from 12:43 to 12:48. Completely buried on the album mix.
I usually post about Burr being tighter, but it seems McBrain was really trying to match the band's previous punch back then on his first outing. Disagree about the ghost notes being lost in the mix, they always have an influence on the groove, even if semi-consciously. He has got gradually looser though, more unnecessary flourishes not really landing where they should, and that doesn't compliment old clattery Harris so well.
I was thinking the same thing, it really feels like he's channeling Clive's style and feel here. Nicko did awesome, this is one of my favorites of his, but I think Clive would have added even more variety and changes and different feels and beats. He wouldn't go for such long stretches of the same thing. Nicko threw in some nice subtle touches and nuances though. And yeah Nicko got looser later and the mix got softer. Steve definitely had the drums mixed softer with Nikko than Clive later on. Plus Nicko plays smoother, so it always bothered me how the drums never had the same punch as with Clive playing and his harder/stronger mix.

This obviously isn't Nicko
@@garymitchell5899It's Nicko. Anyone that knows music can hear it.
So much swing which you only really hear when isolated. What a drummer he is
Great drumming. I like his relaxed way of playing.
Good old Nicko. Great sense of swing!
It's such a pleasure to the authentic track. Thx!
Thanks a lot for your job!!!Amazing Nicko!!!!

What about from 8:55 too?
This obviously isn't Nicko
And who obviously is it then?@@garymitchell5899
The whole kit and cymbals sound insane but that china kills me
Some of his best playing and drum sounds. Punchy and in your face. Didn’t have all the lame mid-80s reverb all over it.
Great stuff! What are the other channels? We can see mono snare and kick and stereo overheads.
I had a bass that had that same good tone; a nice long sustained note. It sounded better than my DW, and it was a cheap CB700. His sounds amazing.
Nice! Thanks!
McBRAAAIIINNN!!!!!
Very nice to have Nicos isolated beats. Is it all one song. Also sounds abit like When eagles dare
Dave Holland vs Nicko McBrain similar.
Thumbs down??? For what?!
A Clive Burr widow for sure

Obviously more talented than Clive, but I think Clive’s style fit Iron Maiden better. Just my opinion
I wouldn’t say “more talented” but “more technically proficient.” But not always a good thing which is kind of what you’re pointing out.

Clive suits the stuff he played on. Not so much the later stuff
