- German countertenor Andreas Scholl singing Empio, Dirò, Tu Sei from George Frideric Handel's 1724 opera Giulio Cesare In Egitto (HWV 17). The title role which we hear Scholl in was originaly composed for the castrato superstar Senesino. Production at the Royal Danish Theater, Copenhagen was filmed in March 2005 with Concerto Copenhagen conduced by Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

Not only Scholl’s voice, Tuva and his chemistry is also amazing. I also impressed by their acting. Despairing mourning is great.
I have no doubt that if Handel had heard Herr Scholl, he would have made as much use of him as he possibly could have. I could definitely imagine him as secondo uomo to Senesino.

How underrated, he makes it sound so easy.... But in reality it's very difficult. But then again, he's a famous countertenor. For many, he's THE countertenor. And yet, he puts the music first and refrains from showing his skill in the cadences.

I'm not normally fond of countertenors, but damn he's good.
Handel does anger so well - infuriated, frustrated, angry arias seem to be his forte. To all accounts and purposes he had a bit of a (hilarious) temper himself, if his wikipedia pages and concert programmes are to be believed. There are quite a few hilarious accounts of what he had to say to his singers when they tried to comment on his compositions, or presume to opine on his work!

Scholl sounds good here, I didn't like his tone in his younger days but he has gotten better!

You mean Scholl? His voice is in no way tiny to my ear.
@LyricSuite78 I cannot help it but disagree with you on many different levels. If the modern audiences accept such a practice as musically satisfying and dramatically appealing, I see no signs of "incompatibility with our culture". Also, calling a performance such as this a "grotesque mockery" is a bit too far fetched. I'm afraid and I will have to very warmly advise you to desist from commenting on the videos I upload before tone done your obvious hatred.

First of all, you are being unnecessarily sarcastic. Second, I don't remember Scholl ever attempting to sing neither Verdi nor Puccini. Third, if you don't like what is offered here, please feel free to search for music and performers that are more according to your liking. Thank you and goodbye.

To assume "hatred" is too much. We all can have opinions and critiques. If we silence critical voices, we will live in an intellectually "pasteurized" society.
It is never a good idea to fantasize about what Handel would think of today's singers.
One thing is certain ::
the virtuoso skills of the castratri have never been matched, let alone surpassed.

few singers have the stamina to sing 6-8 arias in one opera, including duets and ensembles :: J.C. has eight ; Cleo has five or six ; Ses has five. each aria had to express a variety of human emotions.
the extraordinary breath-control, back then, was common.
the beautiful intonation and purity of their voices have also never been matched nor the piercing power of their voices.
_[ Counter-tenors can't do justice to Handel's music and especially J.C., Handel's masterpiece. We have a better chance with mezzo-sopranos. Jennifer Larmore is still the finest Giulio Caesare since recorded sound. ]_
