  • Say the name Zia Mody in any circle let alone the ones in courtrooms and boardrooms and you feel the room take notice. Such is her stature that a mere mention of her name commands respect. Zia Mody is undoubtedly and undeniably one of the most prominent names in Indian law.
Not surprising, given her father, Soli Sorabjee was the former Attorney General of India. Where every corporate house pays top dollar to seek her advice, he was one of the few people whose counsel Zia Mody would often rely upon.
Having earned her law degree at Cambridge and Masters at Harvard, Mody’s professional journey began as a corporate associate at Baker & McKenzie in New York. In 1984 she returned to India and started her own practice, the Chambers of Zia Mody. That boutique firm with 12 lawyers running out of a tiny office at Prospect Chambers in Mumbai, is now the behemoth AZB & Partners; one of the top law firms in India with hundreds of lawyers on its payroll.
Her clientele includes some of the biggest names in the business, with one successful deal after the next. The Tata Group’s acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover, the L&T-Mindtree deal, the Cairn-Vedanta deal, the Hindalco-Novelis acquisition, Bharti Airtel's entry into Africa or more recently, the HDFC-HDFC Bank merger. Zia Mody has played a vital part in every negotiation.
Through the course of her career, Zia Mody has built a reputation as one of the most bankable attorneys in corporate law. Her work ethic and value systems have made her an icon that young attorneys, especially women, look up to. Zia Mody has not just shattered glass ceilings, she has obliterated them.
A regular on Fortune India’s ‘50 Most Powerful Women in Business’ list, Mody has had several professional accolades bestowed upon her. She has also aided the government by being part of numerous advisory committees, including SEBI’s Committee on Corporate Governance and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ Competition Law Review Committee.
An attorney who made a mark for herself in a courtroom dominated by men, a leader who is an inspiration to a whole generation of lawyers, Zia Mody is proof that hard work and diligence have no gender.
