◆Imadegawa-dori (Imadegawa-dori [1]) is one of the main east-west streets in the northern part of central Kyoto.
Along the road, there are Kyoto University, Doshisha University, Doshisha Women's University, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, formerly Ritsumeikan University (now relocated to Kinugasa), old bookstores [2], and private libraries [3]. In particular, the eastern part has the appearance of a student district [4].
Although it is out of the range of Heiankyo to the north, a street was created by the later expansion of the city area to the northeast, and it was called Kitakoji in the Middle Ages. It passes through the northern end of the current Kyoto Gyoen National Garden (Kyoto Imperial Palace).
The name "Imadegawa" comes from the fact that the Imadegawa, a branch of the Kamogawa River, flowed along the street from Higashinotoin Dori to Tokyo Gokudaiji (now Teramachi Dori).
By the three major projects of Kyoto City at the end of the Meiji era, widening and laying of streetcars (Imadegawa Line) were carried out between Karasuma Dori and Senbon Dori, and then they were gradually extended [5]. The east extends from the front of Ginkakuji in Ginkakuji-cho, Sakyo-ku to the west of Keifuku Electric Railroad Tojiin / Ritsumeikan University Kinugasa Campus Mae Station. The area east of Kamogawa is also called Higashi Imadegawa-dori.

◆今出川通（いまでがわどおり[1]）は京都市中心市街地北部の主要な東西の通りの一つ。
沿道には京都大学、同志社大学、同志社女子大学、さらに足を伸ばせば京都府立医科大学、かつては立命館大学(現在は衣笠に移転)などもあり、古書店[2]、や私設図書館[3] なども見られ、特に東部は学生街の様相を呈している[4]。
平安京の範囲からは北に外れているが、後に市街地が北東へ拡大したことにより通りが作られ、中世には北小路と呼ばれていた。現在の京都御苑（京都御所）の北端を通る。
「今出川」の名前は鴨川分流の今出川が東洞院通から東京極大路（現在の寺町通）まで通りに沿って流れていたことに由来する。
明治時代末の京都市三大事業により、烏丸通・千本通間において拡幅・市電（今出川線）敷設が行われ、その後順次延伸された[5]。 東は左京区銀閣寺町の銀閣寺門前から西は京福電気鉄道等持院・立命館大学衣笠キャンパス前駅のやや西まで延びている。鴨川から東は東今出川通とも呼ばれる。
