In this video I will show you the internals of the Sky Q box. Also show you how you can change and upgrade your Hard drive. Please note this may be against the T & C for Sky.
I would have thought that they would have gone with a 1TB Solid State Drive rather that a Spinning Rust hard Drive so will be prone to problems at a later date, They need to start using a RSA4096 Public Key and a RSA4096 Secret Key, The 3TB Spinning Rust Drive has gone kapoot (no longer working), A 100TB Data Center SSD would have been the way to go and the unit can be made thinner and lighter.
Hi, first of all, The Sky Q boxes comes ONLY with 1 TB HDD, Yours was also a 1TB (you can see it over the green label 4:15). 2. You cant use it with another HDD, not even with another 1 TB because the devices (receiver, card, HDD) must have to assign with serial numbers in SKY intern system. 3- you cannot use it even though you have a sky smartcard because of the assingment reason. There for peoples can find this devices on e-bay for 5 euros. And yes, i am a SKY employee. (small note: the devices that can be bought on ebay or anywhere are entered in the system as "stolen / lost devices". Sounds not good )
I buy old devices and wipe the hard drives using EaseUS Partition Master and Acronis True Image. These programs are needed to wipe the partitiion/s that contain the Sky programming that pairs the drives to the box. I then build PC's from old second hand bits that I pick up on eBay, Gumtree and FB Marketplace and I give them away to people in need. Old folks at retirement homes, children of families that do not have the means to purchase devices to aid in their childrens education and I also use them to repair PC's of people I know that need it. I am a retired policeman, are you saying I have broken laws, giving that the items I get are classed as domestic rubbish and am I now a criminal? When I had Sky Q installed, from a Sky HD upgrade, I informed the technician that I do this. He said nothing, but he may not have known and he let me keep the 2 old boxes from my old contract.
In case anyone is wondering does the replacement hard drive work? Yes it does. My hard drive failed on my Q box last night, replaced with a drive from an old PC this morning, used the hard drive reset function on Sky Q, and it works fine. So this serial number stuff isn't correct. Just one screw to remove on the Q box following the video above, very easy removal and replacement, but the screw head is a funny size, luckily I had the correct bit.
My sky q 2TB BOX keeps freezing and the fan goes loud,,I have to unplug the power to restart it but it does it again after 5 minutes,,,have you any idea buddy 👍👍👍
@Aaron singh this was 7 months ago m8,,I worked it out what it was and it was nothing anyone said it was,, it was because I connected a mesh system to my broadband for better WiFi and it didn’t like it so when I disconnected the mesh system,it was perfect again so I sent the mesh system back and just bought a better router,,never had that problem again
put a 1TB seagate in my Sky Q Black box and tried everything it's not accepting it. I did a factory reset before and I think that was a huge mistake, now stuck in the setup screen with the drive error :( freaking out. I put in a clean drive with MBR and no partitions btw.
So we don’t no if a 4tb will work will you bring doing another with a 4tb. Being confident won’t cut it. So after 17 mins of my time I’m none the wizer. Sorry for being pisssed off but truth is we still don’t no if a 4tb will work
anyobody swapped successfully the hard drive with an SSD? mine Is too noisy and honestly i don't like the fact that the motor Is constantly spinning. powering off completely requires too much time to boot the decoder...I'm surprised that nobody tried apparently, this drive is quite noisy as well and now ss drives are really cheap.
Someone gave me a sky Q box but no hard drive in it no wonder they gave it me I do have an old humax bt box with a 500gb hard drive in it would that fit I would just need the black corner pieces so it wunt rattle
hi, is there any risk to recordings on original hard drive (e.g. will box recognise original or require hard drive reset)? Want to know if this means ability for potential infinite storage/archive of recordings if able to use multiple hard drives.
Well this is obviously a Sky box and obviously it is very easy to break. My fan comes on a full speed every morning at 5:45. Remember these boxes talk to Sky all the time so replacing a hard drive would be obvious to them.
You can use EaseUS Partition Master and Acronis True Image to wipe the partition/s that contain the Sky programming information. It's quite easy really.
You wouldn’t see the benefit and if you did probably best to go for a HDD which is designed for the constant read and writes as they have specialised ones
@@MrTechtalk It might actually be able to do chasing playback on 4k (e.g. F1) with an SSD - whatever is in mine simply can't keep up when attempting this. It also might make the box run cooler too since you wouldn't have a full size spinning disk trapped in a shallow case with no real ventilation out of the top. Come on Sky - heat rises!!
@Muhammad Chattha yeah? What about it? So it circulates within the case and just gets hotter and hotter and hotter because hot air does not try to escape downwards! What's your point?
Are these hard drives specific to Sky because mine has died so I can’t record, pause live tv etc, can I replace it by getting one in pc world or would I need to contact Sky for a replacement. It’s a 1tb drive
the skyboxes are limited to 2tb coz they use an mbr partition mapping
delete volumes on hdd then it will work
They should be using SSD drives for the prices they charge 🙃
The hardware for the main box is free.
cant wait til Dec when can fuck this burning box off, never connect as runs to hot and software is crap, Netflix is the future!!!
I found a loose jumper pin inside my box. What is it for?
You need to reinstate the drive as the OS might be on the Spinning Rust Drive.
Bought one of these boxes just for the remote control for a friend but i got the whole box for £3 at a car boot sale with a 1TB hard drive in it
ARE YOU SITTING ON A TABLE LOL
I got a Sky Q Hub as an internet box will i be recieving this box for my TV Box?

That is a 1 terra bite HDD not a 2 TB but thanks for sharing.
Yeah sorry getting my self confused with sky q silver
I have a 1 tb hd sky q box.once the hd is removed, can this hard drive be suitable for a pc build?
1TB hard drive not 2TB
U can get 2TB ones
Yes my sky hub, booster, mini box, sky q all get extremely hot it’s like it’s going to blow up at least it’s not just me ;)
Skyglass teardown 🥺 would be great to see.

So the box i have doesn't have that torx screw or any other visible screws, any ideas how it opens?
Do all Sky Qs come with a 3.5 Hard Drive?
EXACTLY the same hard drive that is in the Sky Amstrad 2Tb HD Box
So could you take out the drive from the Sky + HD box & stick it in the Sky Q box because mine is buggered
Could you take the hard drive out from sky W and use in your gaming pc
Yeah you would just have to format it from within Windows to NTFS to work

Why do sky keep putting the HDD upside down.
I'm gonna take a punt that the people with noisy q boxes have seagates - I'm one. Will pop it open to check
you while we have a feeling Seagate drive if it’s a WD even dance normal audio really known for hard disk failure
I'm sure you said that's a 2TB hard drive.
But can clearly see it's 1TB hard drive

Why would you plug the drive in live and expect it to work?
If I upgrade to a new Sky Q box that is HDR compatible, can I swap the hard disc in the new box for my old Sky Q hard disc and keep the recordings?
anyobody swapped successfully the hard drive with an SSD?

can i connect my portable 3 tb hard drive from usb conevctor? in this sky q model >>/?
No
What about your Sky+hd 2tb box
Launch sky service in India
Bikram Jit I’ve seen you on so many sky videos saying you want sky :) lol
India will be a great business home for sky company

Is it possible to put a sky plus hard drive in a sky q box
Mines really loud (the rediculessly small fan) and burns my hand when ever I touch it.
I feel your pain, it's a joke and dangerous, we unplug overnight if used it
I switched from SKY to Virgin Media and i found the picture was a lot better
Well this is obviously a Sky box and obviously it is very easy to break. My fan comes on a full speed every morning at 5:45. Remember these boxes talk to Sky all the time so replacing a hard drive would be obvious to them.
Any ideas how to remove that first torq screw without a torq bit?
Angle grinder
What happens if you connect the drive to PC? It would be good if you could rip the media files from it but I doubt they've made it easy.

@@doogiescott10 What about EXPVR+ ?
my hard disk has a problem :(
i got it a week ago
Call sky they will replace
At has a decent hdd in it not a generic crappy segate one
Could I fit a SSD?

I’d you have Q just ring sky, the box isn’t yours so they swap it for free.
You do own the boxes so that’s untrue
Incorrect you rent them then once you stop paying you will be required to send it back
