    If your patient has that much calculus with stain incorporated, its not a prophy. Its important to determine this from the beginning by using air, using your explorer and probing. Periodontal status is important.

    Great video! Could you make a video on how to detect decay with the explorer? I feel like some dentists want you to know how to even though we weren't really taught that in school.

    • @dentalelle
      @dentalelle  6 років тому +2

      Great idea! I will! But basically just run the explorer along the tooth, if it sticks or doesnt feel smooth as it should (even try your own teeth for practice) it could be decay.

    My friend is a hygienist and at one office he worked at had a new office manager and if he didn't have a patient she would make him clock out, is that wrong? Wouldn't that give him time to call patients, clean or sharpen instruments?
    He ended up leaving that office, but I wanted to know what you thought about that.
    I love your videos girl!

    • @dentalelle

      Depending on the state he works in, it’s illegal to make him clock out if he doesn’t have a pt. He should report them to the labor boards if it is.

    Hi, thank you for your video, it really helps. May I ask for any suggestions regarding greeting the patients. What to say and what to ask, both general and professional topics and also to obtain the information we , as a hygienist, need to know, before starting the treatment. Thanks in advance!

      Great questions! I have videos on this if you want to do some searching! I ask them how their day is going and I’ll even talk a bit about my day too :)., I inform them what we are doing at the appointment today and let them know how their teeth and mouth looked last time from the chart notes, things like that!

    It is so hard for patients to hear me while I am using the cavitron, have a face shield, and mask. I feel like I am yelling or they really don't understand me. Additionally, a two-way conversation is impossible with the patient having instruments in their mouth. I have only been working about a week as an RDH but I think maybe the ideal time to talk with patients is after I have put the cavitron down and am handscaling - then I am without the face shield and cavitron noise.

    I’m curious, do dental hygienists or dentists ever judge when they see a lot of build up or just general problems in the mouth like cavities or teeth that need root canals?

    • @odeleya1768

      Angela Benny thank you! About a month ago I went to the dentist for the first time in 3 years. When I was younger my parents made me go to one that pretty much caused my extreme dental anxiety. I always sat in the chair in pain from the drill bc apparently the injection left my whole mouth numb besides that tooth. I didn’t really feel too motivated to take care of my teeth as often as I should’ve. I went to a much better one now and my teeth aren’t so horrible, a few cavities and one that needs a root canal. I was just wondering if dental professionals judge, bc i know for a while I was slacking but now I’m doing the best I can. I’m also kind of scared of judgement from my moms side and even though I didn’t really feel much judgement at my checkup, I’m still worried. I’m probably gonna cost her quite a bit of money bc of the fillings and root canal I need done even though we have insurance

      @@odeleya1768 we do know that a lot of patients have dental anxiety or doctor anxiety and even just being in the office. I have several friends that have severe dental anxiety from childhood as you mentioned and I will always encourage my patients to not give up. Most important is to speak up if something is uncomfortable or you are in pain. And if you ever feel judged just find a new clinic and see how it goes. Some dentists and dental hygienists are definitely in the profession for the wrong reasons and some do judge. However for the majority of dental professionals we just want to help people and help as many as we can. Oral health leads to better health overall. I hope things have gotten better for you and you found a good dentist and office to go to now. Also it is wonderful that you have made improvements! I am about to graduate and I am nervous about making my patients feel as comfortable as possible and keeping my appointments on time because it is a struggle to do everything in such a short time frame of 45 minutes to an hour. I wanted to become a hygienist because I loved going to the dentist as a child and I know that so many people have fear of the dentist and I wanted to make those patients anxiety and fear go away while in my care. I want to do the very best I can and give all my patients the very best care!

      @@rebeccabrown3277 I’m so happy to say that now, my dentist is absolutely incredible! I got all of my cavities fixed (I had 8/9 😬) and still need the root canal’s and crowns. My dentist always explains what he’ll do before he does it, reassures me, makes sure I’m comfortable the whole time, etc. I didn’t even know such dentists existed until recently. My dentist that I had for 4/5 years of my childhood was horrible with kids and wasn’t exactly gentle and gave a lot of judgement. I told myself, when I’m older I’ll go to the dentist as little as possible, but now, I’m surprised that I actually enjoy it and I look forward to it.
      I think it’s amazing the reason you want to be a hygienist! Honestly, if I ever went into the dental field (I probably won’t), my goal would be to give people the opposite experiences of what I was given most of my childhood. I love that I could get feedback from a dental professional, bc it’s great to see the other side of things, since I only have a patients point of view. I always wondered if I was still being judged, even though I don’t sense it
