How do you think Alan's parents reacted when they returned and didn't find him? How did they look for him and how could Sam spend all his fortune looking for him?

Judy says “This house has been empty for years”. How long had the Parish’s house been empty for? Both Alan’s parents died in 1991, so the house would only have been empty for four years.
You're right, the house does look like it's been abandoned for longer than 4 years! Assuming they still lived there at that point, all their time and money went to try to find Alan. Assuming they hired housekeepers, cooks etc they would have stopped hiring them and let the house fall into disrepair, because as the tramp said, they quit caring. Or they might have sold the house for funds to find Alan, but that wouldn't explain why all the furniture, paintings, family heirlooms etc were still there, so maybe the former is more likely?

im guessing it takes a few years
He probably bounced around a few different jobs, then applied to and attended the academy before joining the force.
Some require an associates degree or 2 years plus an additional 6 months at the police academy in the US. Definitely wouldn't take 5 years though.
Police Academy training lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half in America. Carl wouldn’t have been in training for all 5 of those years.
Maybe he got drafted into the military and joined the police after he was discharged.
