The Bismarck was not left unscathed, it was in fact damaged by the Prince Wales. She was slowed down as a result, and had to head back to port for repairs.
When I mention the Treaty of Versailles limitations, I mistakenly cut out the part where I mention Germany losing a huge chunk of its territory. I am only human, everyone, I make really silly editing mistakes. Always let me know if there’s anything else I may have slipped up on, please do feel free to correct me on any facts I may have overlooked or misinterpreted. U-boat effort couldn't have starved Britain but If it was invested in more early on iy certainly would have sunk more tonnage & cost Britain let alone the USA more sailours.
Replacing sailours is more difficult then shippage or cargo which all are of value but skilled personal take a generation or 2 to replace while ships is about a year or 2 while cargo lost is a loss in financial capital which stings the wallet but won't decide the outcome.
Germany at sea was much the same story in the air as skilled pilots like sailours if lost are exceedingly difficult to train to any meaningful degree for what good is a platform be it air, land or sea without sould operating it?
This is much of why every nation in the later cold war in the west prioritised crew survival in all branches!

ORP Piorun also defended Clydebank during the Clydebank Blitz. The town's AA guns has been pulled south to protect London, leaving the town virtually undefended. Piorun was in dock at the time for repairs and used her guns to fire at the Luftwaffe. Only stopping when she ran out of ammunition. Witnesses at the time reported her gun barrels glowed red.
There is 'Solidarity Plaza' with a monument the town hall commemorating this and the bravery of the Polish people.

Honestly, I think what the Submarine fleet did in the atlantic was enough to salvage the „failed“ tag from the Kriegsmarine. Being a continental power yet still being able to, for at least a while, keep the 2 biggest naval powers on their toes, is impressive.
Kapitänleutnant Amira sank 47 Allied ships in WW2. A truly remarkable U-boat commander.
Yes exactly
Hans-Ulrich Rudel of the German Luftwaffe destroyed 519 Soviet tanks and sank the Soviet battleship Marat with his Stuka. Rudel flew 2,530 missions during the war and destroyed 2,000 enemy targets. Such a medal candidate will never appear again, never ever again.

Machste das in Deutschland klopft morgen das SEK an deiner Haustür lol
Bro the duality of the germans is just fascinating. Yea uh lemme get uh 15 bajillion boats without proper supply lines or highly developed and industrialized naval fabrication facilities, and meanwhile you got the luftwaffe engineers smoking absolute gas making literal marvels of engineering and getting all the attention. I really wonder what the naval engineers wouldve cooked up if they got more attention and funding. Probably some kind of submersible aircraft carrier Avenger's S.H.I.E.L.D type situation considering the crazy wacko uber-architecture they had ruminated about.
Such a wild era of Germany.
Maybe Bismarck with V rocket series or low flight Fritz X wire guided launched from ship

The U-boats were the reason I first fell in love with WWII. It also influenced me to learn German, oddly enough. This has always been a fascinating topic to me. If you’re interested, pick up a copy of the book “Iron Coffins” by Herbert Werner. What's this.. A new military history nerd channel... AND THEY GOT A KRIEGSMARINE VIDEO!? I'm subscribing right now!
16:55 The last word I heard on this matter in particular was that the Kriegsmarine was probably the best led branch of the German military during WWII, perhaps in part because of its neglect. Its ultimate performance, as you outlined, left much to be desired, but it still fairly consistently outperformed expectations, and was particularly innovative in the area of submarines, mines, and things of that nature.
Where other branches of the military, perhaps most notably the Luftwaffe, were subject to the fickle and often foolhardy whims of the Nazi party leadership (I'm looking at you, Goering), the neglected, underfunded Kreigsmarine was left, for the most part, in the capable hands of well trained, well learned, and experienced military leaders.

I have a book about the armed forces of Germany during 1935-1945. The kriegsmarine were doomed from the start, but the submarines kept them from completely being a failed navy. But hey, they looked cool while they did it!
Very true
I have a similar book that tells how both the French and Italian were ahead of the Germans in Submarine construction mostly because neither could afford to keep up with the navies built by Great Britain 🇬🇧 and America 🇺🇸.

Long time amateur military historian here. Got my first book on naval history at 12 and now at 56 I have 35ft of a 40ft wall of shelves full of history books from ancient history to modern military tech. Always good to see a young person wanting to learn history.
I believe had the Germans focused on Uboat construction earlier they could have forced England to give up. However once the US shipbuilding industry spun up the Uboats couldn't sink the LIberty ships fast enough. The average build time of a Liberty ship was three weeks or less being built at four different shipyards dozens at a time 24/7.
The problem with the Z plan was that Germany assumed the other navies would not be building anything while they were building. The Royal Navy would have started to build the 6 Lion class battleships. Their aircraft carrier building program would continue to stay ahead of the Germans. They were also planning a new class of heavy and light cruisers. The French would have been able to finish the remaining 3 Richelieu class battleships and possibly started a new class. They were also building two aircraft carriers and planning a new heavy cruiser design. The Russians were also building four Sovetsky Soyuz battleships that could have been completed by the mid 1940s. Now throw in the Americans with their Essex and Midway carriers, Iowa and Montana class battleships and about five different classes of cruisers. The 4 Graf Zeppelin carriers and 6 H class 2 Bismarck and 2 Scharnhorst wouldn't be enough.
Since you are a Kapitänleutnant of the Uboat arm I understand why your hair is out of regs. Just back from patrol.
Speaking of patrol those in the "Silent Service" have an euphemism for submariners lost at sea. They simply state that they are "Still on patrol"

Nice video. Thanks.
One point about Plan Z is that was supposed to build the surface threat to challenge the Royal Navy's (RN) maritime dominance in a repeat of the Kaiser's High Seas Fleet. HMS Dreadnought ushered in a Naval Arms race that lead up to WW1, and challenged the UK's maritime dominance. The Washington and London naval treaties were written to prevent that arms race from happening again, mainly between the USA and Japan. The RN liked it because it was a safe excuse to dump a lot of obsolete ships while maintaining 'Britannia Rules the Seas' lifestyle and guarding their overseas possessions.
Plan Z, if war waited till a minimum 1943-44, would have given the Kriegsmarine (KM) a larger fleet that could conceivably give Germany a chance in a rematch of the Battle of Jutland. The UK feared of being seen as a weakened power, and smaller powers trying to take away their territories (See Falkland Islands 1982). So the larger KM could tie up larger RN assets just to protect their islands and fleet even if they just sat in port. Or bully the RN to stay home to protect their ships in fear of losing too many in Jutland 2.0 that the UK couldn't defend their empire down the road.

Wohoo, I always thought that the kreigsmarine uniforms were severely underrated. Thank you.
I agree!
Großadmiral Erich Raeder would literally have shouting matches with Hitler over invading the Soviet Union and Hitler scaling back naval rearmament lmao
Honestly he wasn’t wrong, the invading of the Soviets was pretty much germany’s worst mistake in the war (military wise, they had worse ones in other areas)
@@offizieramiraactually it was a preemptive strike against Operation Groza, which Hitler launched with only weeks to spare. Stalin’s plan was to wait until Germany was exhausted and stretched thin in the war against the west and then open up an eastern front into Germany and their sphere of influence states in the Balkans once they and Western Europe were depleted and weakened enough from the war and from there to conquer the rest of Europe. Stalin wasn’t expecting the relatively quick and easy victory for Germany in the west, so he immediately shored up his position in the Baltic region after France fell. Go research into all the prepping and staging that was going on at the Soviet border by the Soviets shortly before Barbarossa was launched. Hitler even alluded to the military buildup of historic proportions in the region in one of his speeches at the time. He knew what Stalin was up to.
The Germans had the most technologically advanced submarines out of every nation in WWII. The main problem was exactly what Grand Admiral Doenitz identified, they simply didn't have enough of them in the beginning to put Great Britain out of the war.
IMO too simplistic.
The Kriegsmarine was simply too small at the start of the war.
Although the UBoots were fine, there was nothing exceptional with the main types for most of the war - Type II, VII and IX.
All those technologically advanced designs were too little too late.
The torpedoes also had their failings, leading to some disappointing early engagements. That isn’t a criticism, some flaws only appear during extensive and / or operational usage.
Of course a navy is not only about producing ships, it is about training the men and the whole logistics for operations.
Germany as a continental power would always require more attention on land warfare, unlike the UK and US. It makes sense that with a choice of funding, manpower and logistics, naval matters would take a lower priority. Ultimately Germany was defeated on the Eastern Front by the Red Army and not by the Battle of the Atlantic - it took the western allies until mid ‘44 to invade Western Europe, basically trailing the Red Army in the East. The bulk of the Wehrmacht was destroyed on the Eastern Front, the Red Army took Berlin. It is true that like WW1 before, it was the German submarine arm that came closest to “defeating” Britain, however it is difficult to really defeat a nation without putting boots on the ground and the German armed forces simply did not have the resources to launch such a contested invasion. IMO it was basically a miracle that the German navy was able to successfully invade Norway under the nose of the Royal Navy, but it still paid a high price. Long story short, it was simply impossible for Germany to have a strong Army, Air Force and Navy. As a land power the Navy would always take last place, especially as Germany did not have any colonies to “protect” like Britain and France. In WW1 the imperial navy was impressive, but for much of the war it was a drain on resources, with the added negative image of having sparked the mutiny that started the fall of the Imperial Government and call for an armistice (aka conditional surrender). Last but not least I actually believe that the Kriegsmarine performed as good as could be expected and sometimes better - like the famous Channel dash.
Excellent video, and awesome mini-museum! I dabble in uniforms too, but so far only stick to US kit. If you can stomach the cost I highly recommend yanks mannequins-they’re very high quality!!

This is the first video of your's that I've seen. I really enjoyed it! Thank you for the time & effort you put into the research & presentation - Stellar!!
In my opinion & I'm no expert on the Kriegsmarine either, but I don't believe that they would've been able to do much more to win the war than they were already doing with the ships & U-boats that they had. Not because of any mistakes in tactics, but simply because they were also at war with the USA & USSR, not only the UK. The UK would've been enough to gridlock them all by themselves, with the sinking of the Bismarck & Tirpitz & breaking the Enigma Code. But with the US supplying Britain, aiding them and also firing on German ships in the Atlantic, even before the US officially joined the war on Britain's side in Dec. 1941 after Pearl Harbor, it was too much. There is very little to none said about this to keep up the facade that the US wasn't involved in WW2 in any way until after Pearl Harbor. This isn't true. They were supplying Britain before that & had even fired on a German vessel or two on at least more than one occasion.
And then there's the fact that Germany was also at war with the Soviet Union. They had a Navy too, even though very few talk about their Red Banner fleet. Their Submarine 20 under Captain Maranesko sunk the German ship Wilhem Gustloff with terrible loss of life. A great tragedy.
So no, I don't believe Germany would've won. Much for the same reason they didn't win on land either. They were boxed in fighting a two-front war against three enemies with no real help.
Thank you so much! Yes, I agree. Germany was pretty cookable.
Hitler did have a rather grandiose plan for the Kreigsmarine: Plan Z. It envisioned two more Bismarck-class battleships and four to six even larger Hutten-class battleships (apx 60,000 tons armed with 8x16" main guns), several more improved Hipper-class heavy cruisers, several improved versions of the Graf Spee panzerschiff and even a handful of Graf Zeppelin aircraft carriers, along with more destroyers to serve as escorts. The problem was that the earliest date that such construction could have been completed would have been 1947, and even that date would have required Hitler to "play nice" with his neighbors. A second problem was that, even with the Molotov-Von Ribbentop Pact with Stalin's USSR providing resources to build the ships and to power them once built, there was still only so much steel and oil to go around. 60,000 tons of steel might build one super-battleship, but how many airplanes or tanks can't be built because the steel is used for other priorities? And what would the chances have been that Stalin would have refrained from attacking Germany for at least six years?
The Prince of Wales did damage the bow fuel tanks of Bismarck forcing it to head to France trailing fuel, which helped make it easier to find.
Yes, she was damaged. I could really have worded that better, my apologies. By unscathed I basically meant in one piece 🥲
@@offizieramira Don’t worry, you do great work. I am an amateur historian from an army family. I love your videos. BTW, one of my cousins was US Army signal core intelligence in the BDR. He was an en expert in cracking Soviet communications. Back to this video, Bismarck did not fuel up in Norway immediately to favor Prinz Eugen since she had a shorter range. Bismarck did not have full tanks when forced to leave Norway. So, when the fuel in the bow tanks was contaminated by sea water, Bismarck had to head to France for repairs. It lacked enough fuel to commence Operation Rhineland. That hit by Prince of Wales had a history altering impact.

I was lucky enough to tour the U-505 in Chicago, and let me say that you all have no idea just how it looks or feels to be around and inside of a ww2 submarine. The museum had lowered most of the floor boards of the submarine by about 8 inches to make it safer for tourists, but still, I could not stand up straight in the submarine. I'm 6'1" and 155 lbs. so kind of tall, but definently not a big guy. Our tour group was around 25 people, and we filled up the submarine quite well. However, the submarine had a crew size of 50. When you're walking around outside the submarine, it looks massive. As soon as you get inside, it becomes incredibly small. Needless to say, I don't think I would enjoy being part of a submarine crew.
I’m planning on going this Spring. Do they offer private tours or just group ones?
@offizieramira As far as I know they're only group tours, but you can walk around and within the submarine as much as you want. It isn't time restricted at all. You just buy a pass for the submarine exhibit, and then you get to be there as long as you want. The "tour" is really just an employee that lets small groups into the inside of the submarine so it doesn't become overcrowded. I have a ton of interior pictures with nobody in frame. There are also lots of displays with militaria and scale model dioramas.
Fun fact; as famous as the Bismarck class was, the Scharnhorst class battleships were much more effective, especially due to not being trolled since leaving port, managing a few convoy raids before Gneisenau was bombed snd scuttled at port and Scharnhorst later sunk at North Cape.
But curiosly enough, the most effective German surface raiders of the war were the Hilfskreuzers; armed merchant ships that acted as raiders in the Atlantic, Indian, and even Pacific oceans.
Also iirc the mass of submarines in the Atlantic also led to greater radio traffic, making detection easier. Part of allied strategy at that point was to send stray merchants into U-Boat areas to keep the Germans in the dark.
@offizieramira
The Enigma code was broken by 3 Polish mathematicians Marian Rejewski Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski, however, after the outbreak of war in Poland, they passed their scientific research to the British and French, while Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman developed their work by creating the Turing bomb
by the way, very interesting material, I could learn a lot of interesting things because I am not very interested in the German navy, I prefer tanks:)
keep it up
Thank you! I prefer regular infantry myself, but the Navy was very interesting to me in this case
Yes they could have won, but with the resource allocation for land and air battles, especially Oper Barbarossa there is debatable reasons for every decision made.
It is very true that there weren’t enough resources
The Kriegsmarine was at a disadvantage from the very beginning, because of the painter, and because of the treaty as you said. Basically they had many plans to make 10 giant air craft carriers to attack America, and also had plans to make a new class of battleships. I can't remember how many.... but the only worthy ship in the whole war was the Bismark. That and the you boats. It was simply not a priority for Germany, when the Aircraft was superior to the ship at that time.
Cool video! 🫡😎 Btw is that a PPSh-41 in the background?

I live long enough to seen things and done things but i never thought i would see a military big sis on yt talking about Kriegsmarine
Dear Amira, many thanks!!!
Excellent video as always and clearly presented information, Well Done!
Lemmy always said the Germans had the cool uniforms. Hugo Boss had a hand in them, i believe.
Once Germany went into Russia, they over played their hand. The first thing to do is secure resources you need to fight a war. Base resources and supply chains are vital
Hugo Boss only produced some of the paramilitary and youth group uniforms. And yes, Germany was very overambitious.
Hugo Boss did production, design was created by an SS officer iirc
@offizieramira thank you for shining light on history. Everyone focuses on the bad. There were good, cool, and lasting positive things too. I'm interested in all of it. Especially tanks, machines, tactics, guns. I've experienced a lot of things saved from the jaws of time and a want to forget.
In the Q&A you mentioned your mates also collected army stuff so will they ever feature on the channel in the near or far future thanks.
I have a question where you bought the replica of this Panzerfaust?
I think it was At the Front
Love the channel!
Thanks! :)
It wasn’t really a failure.
The Kriegsmarine had to fight against the whole world on multiple fronts and was attacked from every directions.
Therefore the surface fleet was constantly being targeted while the u-boats were actually highly successful in sinnking many allied war, supply and trading ships.
Yes and no. The surface fleet. Yes, you're correct. The submarine fleet was the only thing that worried Winston Churchill. You look amazing, as usual. Thanks for the presentation.
gotta rename the Bismarck to Aramira in World of Warships
