If you're in the construction industry I don't believe it would be too difficult to figure out the mix.. Though if he was clever he would patent this to secure it. Either way bitumen is still used to bind the materials.
Its just a cheaper method than using first generation quarried stone.
A very significant downside of using this will be that as friction removes material from the roads in very small pieces, you will have a steady stream of microplastics entering the environment.
This could significantly increase the plastic pollution if done on a large scale. But since there are no technical details in the video it is hard to say with any degree of certainty.

Plastic also vapourises and leaches. . . so in minute amounts, but over long times. . . it will contaminate suroundings and enter the water table. . . don't forget history of humans. . . we used to medically prescribe mercury as a wonderful personal use ingediant (in the day some got rich, but now we realise). . . we used asbestos as a helpful personal building componant (in the day some got rich, but now we realise) etc.

@Ritesh Patel shouldn't the lower layers of the road be made of plastic mixed with other components of a regular road? and the uppermost layer would be asphalt so that no microplastics get separated. there must be some way to bind the plastic together.

Everytime I recycle some plastic, I know that the the probability of being recycled the second time is still low and there's risk it ends up in the landfill/ocean. If it goes into roads then it will stay there. I'm glad to hear other countries are doing a small part as well.

Its already done. Roads built with the use of plastics waste are under observation to learn its long time effects in India. since 2012
The truth is this has been done in India at least for the past 15 years in India through Indian governments collaboration with some universities and colleges. Not new. But issue of microplastic is yet to be researched thoroughly before changes in a mass scale.

These types of roads have already been implemented and built for the last 15 years in India. Originally invented by Prof Rajgopalan Vasudevan in Chennai in 2002, commercialized by Ahmed Khan through his company KK Plastic Waste Management. And since the last 10 years, it's been built in more than 20 cities in India, most prominently in Southern Metropolitans like Chennai, Bangalore and parts of Kerala. And now due to the success of these roads to being durable, NHAI(the main road building corporation in India) itself has devised a plan to work with the Waste Management systems in cities to build roads using plastic waste. Also, to all the people saying it's a bad idea coz it will melt, its not just plastic itself, it's mized with Tar, Concrete and other materials to make it durable, heat resistant, weathering and erosion resistant. Plastic roads would never work in places like Texas where we use concrete for roads because of the drastic temperature changes. It gets and STAYS HOT in the summer here. Like REALLY HOT, during the summer we have a LOT of triple digit days.

Both tarmac and plastic are some of the most recycled materials in a developed nation. Curious to see if the benefits are true. Otherwise you may as well recycle to plastic for other uses.

True, but for 99.999% of the audience it is just showing a possible trend in technology, or a project that their government may adopt in the next 10 years to be environmentally friendly.
It is like watching mini-documentaries on cutting edge aerospace equipment, you may be watching a type of advertisement for: a much more efficient design of jet turbines, SpaceX's reusable rockets, or a zero g 3D printing company. It is unlikely that we will ever be able to purchase these products, we just find them interesting.
Plus it would be very hard for a company to protect their general idea of putting recycled plastic in roads, people have been thinking about putting rubbish as the base of roads for years.
I doubt the inventor would be able to protect his intellectual property, maybe they can protect the fine details of the manufacturing process, but with a small amount of R&D any factory that produces bitumen could probably put bits of plastic in their product.
I have started doing my part in this, using less plastic.
When i'm shopping i try to use less plastic bags.
Even sometimes filling up every pocket in my jacket just to not have to get an bag.
Even got so far that i bought myself a few reuseble bags made of fabric that i bring everytime i'm grocery shopping.
Now a days i've even get this far that sometimes i don't have an plastic bag for my garbage! haha.

But plastic bags are still being made. It's like someone saying, "let's stop the slave labour in china" and buying non chinese goods, sure you dont pay into that system, but it's still happening, you are going to have to get everyone on board with it before it works.
Road building may not be among the topmost priorities, but putting waste plastic to good and productive use definitely is one of them.
But maybe, in long term, these plastics will start to wear off(due to friction) and will get mixed into the air, and we might ingest it by air or food produced by the side of the road....

There are more microplastics flying in your living room than on street with plastic bonding agent mixt in. Every time you sit on your sofa some bits of foam flies up and the same story with carpet, laminated floors, sneakers, etc. It's not like bitumen is the cleanest thing in the world. And plastic been around us long enough that they can say it will take longer time to fotodegrade the conventional asfalt. But it is really the same thing with slightly better properties and more expensive.
That´s what I thought. As much as I think this idea sounds good, we also have to study it to make sure this isn´t actually destroying the planet rather then helping it. Study it- if it is safe then go for it, but don´t just jump on an idea that sounds good before properly studying it.
That closing comment was pathetic. This seems to be an excellent way to repurpose waste. What the hell does it matter if it doesn't single-handedly save the planet? The planet can take on a multitude of ideas at the same time.
No it's not. Building roads is not a priority, can't be, because that incentivizes more use of cars and therefore pollution... of course recycling is a good idea and using waste for roads it is good but not building roads per se. That was the point you missed.
Yeah, it was at the least unnecessary. It's like, "Oh, no. Our 100-man world-environmental-rescue team is going to be bogged down with this for years!" Or, "But this is going to burn through our limited supply of plastic wastes that could go to something else!" I didn't hear anyone in the video suggest that this be made a top priority.
Roads will be built and repaired no matter what. If anything, they are repaired far too infrequently due to the cost. Would you sooner they be done using recycled plastic or with bitumen which means more oil extraction? Building roads out of plastic does not "encourage" anyone to build more. Nobody is sitting there thinking, "I'm in the mood for a10 million piece of essential infrastructure but I won't bother because it's not green enough". Getting planning permission for highways and even the smallest piece of footpath is extremely demanding and a clear need or benefit has to be demonstrated. This simply enables town planners to do so killing three birds (cost, recycling, construction) with a single stone.

Road building should be a priority, because it allows the establishment of car-free urban spaces. When electric cars become the norm, air pollution won't be an issue.
Not just for tarmac roads but building materials like concrete, block, and bricks...I am a fan for the Solar Roads project that marvels beyond the old age of tarmac and concrete road...

actually it is also used as a brick for buildings. it is just a start-up too here in the Philippines. but it is way more durable than the traditional cement bricks.

In India we use interlocking plastic tiles made of plastic waste..Mainly used on sidewalk and driveways for private property..It's quite cheap and durable as well.

I wasn't aware road quality was measured on an absolute scale. I'm sure that compares to the jungles of South America, Ukraine's roads are a dream.
All I know is when I go out on my motorcycle, there are so many potholes that going around roundabouts and corners is a real danger.
Mat Broomfield I didn't want to shame anyone with something like "it's such a first world problem" but the first thing I noticed in the U.K. was absolutely amazing road quality comparing to Ukrainian and Russian (even in remote areas). Motorcycle is not dangerous to ride here it's just impossible to ride.

You said that to look more informed than others. That you supposedly know something others don't.
I'd like to see the science behind it, how much energy does it take to produce and what waste emissions does it create. How does a partly plastic road compare to a conventional one given that bitumen is itself a waste product from the oil industry. I don't see how something which lacks the hardness of aggregate or the flexibility, durability and re-usability of bitumen can make a better cheaper or more environmentally friendly road.
According to the video, the plastic pellets are used to replace a portion of the bitumen only, the aggregate mix does not appear to be changed. (at 2:07) Lowering the overall demand for bitumen would likely cause more bitumen to be converted to diluted bitumen (dilbit) and used as fuel in applications where bunker fuel is being used. Alternatively, if the cost of bitumen is driven down, it may simply be used in asphalt in areas of the world where it may have been previously cost prohibitive. (developing countries etc)

I like that we are thinking of solutions, but something I learnt as a child is that heating plastics causes toxic gases to be released at a high enough temperature...such as in heating asphalt. This works for cold climates better than hot I would assume.

Bad idea. It can break into microscopic pieces and enter the water supply, harming animals and people. It also wouldn't provide as much traction as asphalt so it would cause more accidents

A test has already confirmed that the water we drink already contained microscopic plastic,they tested around 50 bottles and 30 of them are confirmed to have microscopic plastic in it.

Plastic roads are usually useful within buildings reach. And corridors for airports links of nearby terminals. Cross roads between towering buildings.

Ummmm, we had started proper construction of plastic roads about one or two years ago in India. It has not become the norm everywhere but quite a few districts do that.
Not one or two years we have this kind of roads in Kerala for at least 6 years. Before road used to break down every year during the rainy season and now It looks like new road even after so many years.

This is almost exactly like an idea I had as a kid! I always wondered why they didn't mix in old tires into the road mix, this would recycle old tires and give the road a bit more flex and help prevent pot holes!

Me and my dad watched this. I'm aiming to be a zero waste home owner in a few years and as good as plastic roads may sound to some, plastic chemicals are still very harmful to the planet.
Plastic gives out chemicals into the food and drink we consume from plastic, it can effect our mood and even our health.
Plastic roads where I admire the thought gone into it I don't see it as durable in summer, slippy in winter and when it rains the chemicals will soak into the ground. Understanding the impact plastics has on us is much more dangerous in smaller animals and without some of those smaller animals we may not exist if we someday break a food chain in an animal.

Building roads may not be the main thing that will save our planet but it is one huge step in the right direction. We build roads every day and recycling plastics would both reduce cost and solve plastic waste. If 100 people work together to reduce plastic waste in such brilliant and innovative ways, the world will change for the better.

As the asphalt production and laying process would chemically bind the plastic with the bitumen it would, chemically, create a stronger bond lattice than normal bitumen with the other asphalt components. Magnesium makes raw Aluminium stronger in a similar fashion. And, as plastic has a far longer decay rate than bitumen, the bonded road surface would invariably last longer and be far more cost effective than digging up and re-laying roads, which also saves CO2. I would look at this as a win-win for everyone and I'm surprised there are so many doubters/haters saying otherwise with no basis for their ramblings. Bitumen is as flammable, if not more so, than re-processed plastic. Re-processed plastic also has a much higher melting point than bitumen, so the plastic should help a road resist melting and deformation in very hot climates. From a chemical, engineering, structural and environmental perspective there is no down side to this idea.
What I want to know is what happens to the pollutants captured by the stormwater that runs off the road? Presumably there will be tiny pieces off plastic within the stormwater of the plastic roads so I would be surprised if standard stormwater infrastructure would be able to break down the plastics to an eco-friendly form or remove all of these plastic particles. Ofcourse stormwater off roads with the bitumen binding agent will also contain pollutants that should be dealt with if we are to be eco-friendly. However, I would be very much interested in knowing how it is proposed that the stormwater be treated and how the pollutants and their treatment compare to bitumen roads.
Terrina Helliwell what we should know is bitumen and plastic itself are the Petro chemicals.. with base being the oil extraction..I doubt these two have very different composition. and if u keep on doubting on this solution than what shud be done?? just burn away the plastic waste or end up in the landfill??
I don't know whether he is just making a composite or a new polymer(probably composite) ... but even if we fill it in landfill we do cause some extent of pollution which will probably be comparable to the pollution due to particulates and rain water run-away.

Microplastics are a serious concern. They are not avoided by using landfills instead of making roads.Using more bioplastics can potentially reduce the microplastics problem at the source.

This is much worse than the roads we have now. Because like others have pointed out the plastic would wear off the roads and find there way into the storm drain that leads to the ocean(now we have more plastic in the ocean). not to mention its gong to be impossible to recycle the roads because you cant take take every bit of every different plastic apart. Our roads are almost 100% recyclable. If anything his making the plastic pollution much worse . This is journalism at its finest. Didn't bother at all to think about what they are reporting and just make a click bait title for views. I know the comment section arent scientist but we do have some sort of common sense. Cheaper like how do you go cheaper than crushed up rocks? Literally youll have to send the plastic to a sorting plant. Then get them and melt them into tiny pellets. Wow you are unbelievably stupid. They are using the plastic to bind the rocks in the road instead of bitumen and not replacing the rocks with the pellets. Plastic acts as a binding agent which keeps the road together.
The roads aren't literally made of plastic, it's just replacing the oil which is used to bind the rocks
The point made by TheAgentOfDeath is correct.... As the the roads wear the plastic dust, a pollutant, gets washed into the oceans. Plastic is being found in more and more unintended places. Just don't look too closely at the clams and mussels, etc, that you may enjoy eating.

We add plastic water bottles to our asphalt every day.
Plastic helps maintain the integrity of the asphalt and eliminates plastic bottle pollution. Oh...plastic straws too.

In Colombia they use plastic to build houses. For roofing, framing, walls, floors, siding. Now THAT'S putting it into permanent use while using a LOT of it!

Yes it is, for the time being. Until all of mankind drives electric motorcraft, fossil fuel engines require pristine roads to acquire the best fuel per mile consumption. Poor roads cause mechanical damage as well as physical damage to freight and the human body.
It may work in some region but in cold climate it would not work as once the ice forms it will break the asphalt itself. Also, plastic particles will get into environment which causes even more damage.
As plastic roads wear down they will release microplastics into the environment, waterways and air. It might be better to reuse plastic in structures that are not subject to such wear like in buildings etc.

NYC tried using that some years ago and found that because the plastic does not absorb the oil dripping off some cars it made the roads slick and they had to cut grooves in the roads

Its a great invention and all, but there are so many cool inventions to help the planet, but people won't seem to care. So I don't think plastic roads will be mainstream, anytime soon at least. On top of that, he doesn't want to tell the recipe of the roads, which is making it harder for it to be mainstream.

Oky one question, what if its RLLY hot and if they made roads out of plastic, won't the whole city just smell like burnt plastics?
It's basically a mix of different rocks that make up the roads we have, just added plastic. It's not entirely plastic therefore the chances of a city smelling like plastic would be less likely in REALLY HOT conditions.
Also, the amount of air pollution that cars emit and other circumstances would be far greater and mix the plastic odor instead if ever there would be.

Ahhh, it's a mix of different rocks too therefore the chances of it burning is less likely... There's a chance that the plastic would deform because of hot conditions so the quality of the road as said, lasts longer, is questionable.

I think producing beter roads and repair of existing roads, is a major problem in Africa and even South Africa, which in turn can also address the lack of jobs. The more ways we find to reuse plastic the beter for the environment. First world countries should invest in third world countries and we should all help. The common uneducated, homeless or uneployed person, can be given a life changing opportunity to beter themselves, their circumstances and the environment.

I am from India but I believe it is such a short term solution but will create a havoc in the long run. That is why this hasn't been adopted in the long run as yet. It is only used as a quick fix for damaged roads so that people don't accidentally get stuck in a pothole or sth in rainy season or otherwise so that accidents could be prevented due to faulty old roads.
Imagine the entire globe having plastic roads , businesses will be baited not to stop using plastic, using plastic roads as an excuse. Plus the extent of harm that could be caused due to thick layers of plastic on ground. The animals beneath the ground couldn't breathe or dig and will be killed. Even if u dig an abandoned land after thousands of years, u will only find non biodegradable plastic components intact and buried by layers of soil accumulating on top. The constructions are only increasing to accommodate or relocate humans and its ever increasing population.

Ignez Maciel It isn't. There are a lot of problems with plastic roads, like falling apart or melting due to frictionand high temperatures. If it falls apart, you get microplastics which are extremely hard to clean up. Also, it's weird that he wants to save the world but keeps his recipe secret. If I had a genuine recipe I'd share it.
