I was at this game. Unknown to everybody, the cadets at the game all had airhorns hidden in their coats. When Army scored, all the airhorns went off. It was a pretty cool stunt. The Army buses didn't leave until 5:30am the next morning. They were free to do whatever. Some of the cadets came over to our dorm after the game looking for clothes so they could party downtown. Then they came back in the middle of the night to change back into their uniforms. I remember some guy lost his hat, and he knew he was in big trouble. Those were trying times, the Vietnam war was in full swing. Those guys were probably seniors and they were headed to God knows where.

Thanks for the memories. I was there for that game (in the Blue Band), and lived in the dorm closest to Beaver Stadium. Had Mike Reid in one of my classes; outstanding gentleman. I remember the 'diamonds' in the end zones well. A simpler time, yes, but a solid statement that "Success With Honor" was a noble virtue.

Watch at 1.25x speed for more realistic timing

Nice touch with the "We Are Penn State" right as our guy rolls into the endzone... hah

This is back when Army and Navy were still pretty big names in college football, so this was a good win on the way to two straight undefeated seasons.

To be this competitive during a War is impressive.

That was great! Remember going to all those games with my dad in the sixties and seventies! Some fantastic memories! We got our season tickets that year and had them until Joe passed! Today I am 63 and my dad is 95 and we still watch the games together! WE ARE:

@MVillani1985 Navy's working its way back up there. Air Force has taken Army's place.

@SashaNein I'd love to see Army, Navy, and Air Force all three be national powers again. I know we'll never see the eight Ivies be powerful again, but it'd be nice to see the service academies no longer associated with an easy win in football. Out of respect for the branches of the armed forces, even at the teams' worst I refused to call them "cupcakes" but instead called them "former powerhouses".

Paterno and Penn State felt cheated out of at least a share of the 1969 national title after going 12-0 just like champion Texas. But the year earlier, few PSU fans complained about barely being considered for the title, even though the Lions were
12-0 just like champion Ohio State. Was it generally conceded that the 1968 Lions
had a softer schedule than a year later? Did Paterno make a fuss about his team
deserving to split with the Buckeyes? Or was Ohio State head and shoulders above them?

Penn State's schedule was considered to be inferior in that era. They mostly played relatively weak Eastern teams. The quality of football in the Big Ten (Ohio State) and the Southwest Conference (Texas) was thought to be superior to that in the East. Struggling to beat Army by 4 points in State College didn't exactly help Penn State's cause.
