- At The Spotted Cat, September 26, 2018. The SJB perform an old standard I first heard by Leadbelly while in college. Charlie Halloran, trombone; Marla Dixon, trumpet/vocals; Tom Fischer, clarinet; John Dixon, banjo; John Rodli, guitar; Tyler Thomson, bass.
Many thanks, James. For those who may be interested, it was composed by Joe Young in 1930, with words by Ira Schuster; and my fellow technically-minded nerds will notice they perform it in Bb, in which Marla comfortably sings it, even though most bands play it in the easier lower key of F.
What a great voice Marla has! She can really get emotion into these old standards.
I don't believe there's anyone on earth quite like her.
Wonderful music! Thank you!
I read your description,James, and just had to hear the "King of the twelve string guitar players of the world" sing this. (Leadbelly's description of himself). He recorded a few things that I love, but I reckon I can live without that one.
I come from a different world and only ever heard this by Eddie Cochran, probably on the "Singin' for My Baby" LP. I'm not sure if I EVER played that turgid, boring record right through, and didn't expect to think much of this. Wrong again, another great performance from the whole band.
Wonderful Band
Sweet!

Cloe talk about next song: Coniversal or conibarsal…song??? What is right? And what
ist the meaning? Don´t find a translation??? Thank you!!
She says "This is a Connee Boswell song called "A New Moon Is Over My Shoulder". Connee Boswell was a singer from New Orleans who sang with her sisters, Vet and Martha, in the 1930's. She went on her own and had a career as a solo singer in the 1940's. The Boswell Sisters are fantastic (and underappreciated). You can see them here:ua-cam.com/video/MUB3ZR4F8vw/v-deo.html Connee is seated to the left and starts off the song. Martha is seated next to her playing the piano. Vet is standing behind. Connee was always seated because she was paralyzed and could not stand or walk. And you can hear Connee sing "A New Moon Is Over My Shoulder" here (the picture is NOT Connee Boswell): ua-cam.com/video/Q_8ayN8Pwug/v-deo.html
