- During the winter months we tend to get our fair share of storms battering our coastline, producing massive waves, powerful wind and plenty of rain! Over the last five years we have been regularly filming for our UA-cam channel Cornish Walking Trails and have managed to capture on film some of the most memorable storms from a variety of different locations in Cornwall.
After just experiencing one of the most powerful storms ever in Eunice, and with another in the shape of Franklin due to hit in the next 24 hours we have taken this opportunity to bring together some of the footage to make a storm compilation video.
In our brand new UA-cam video, called ‘Cornwall storms - Massive waves, spectacular seas and ferocious winds’ you can watch a compilation of our best bits from filming a variety of storms such as Callum, Ophelia, Ciara, Dennis, Brian and Eunice, taking you on a whirlwind tour from some great safe storm watching locations such as Porthleven, Portreath, St Agnes, Porthcurno, Botallack and Land's End.

We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on UA-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Hi, we have Canon Powershot G7X Mark II. They are quite old now and work hard for us! I think the mark III is out now and we will take a look at that when ours die! Sarah :)

Andrew and Sarah?? Really?? Maybe change your names! At least, you don’t look like ‘the other’ disgraced Andrew and Sarah! I lived in Porthleven 1961-1971. Was SO glad to leave and live just in the south, not the south-west. SO utterly sick of the winds in summer too in Porthleven. Tho of course winter Storms like these were very impressive. Standing on nearby cliffs and able to lean forward until standing almost horizontal in the wind! Amazing, As was the Torrey Canyon dreadful oil spill late 1960s.
Oh dear - no more parallels with another couple!! I remember as a child how my Dad and I would stand on a clifftop, unzip our coats and hold them out like wings, catching the updraft! Like you say, almost horizontal! Sarah :)
Great footage of the Cornish Coast at it’s wildest, pleased to see you have some safe vantage points, it’s always wise to respect the sea, I almost lost my life age 15 in a calm sea on a sunny day on holiday, I was caught in a rip-tide and didn’t have the strength to fight against it, the quick actions of a very brave young man who realised I was in need of help, somehow saved my life that day, I will be forever grateful to that brave stranger, I believe he must have been my guardian Angel 👼 without him I wouldn’t be here watching your amazing videos, I did find him last year after sixty years of searching, as I wanted to thank him once again! and thank you 😊 Andrew & Sarah for keeping us on the edge of our seats 🤗

Fav viewing spots Cape Cornwall, Hell Bay (Bryher) and of course, Porthleven. With some many tragic deaths from wave watchers it’s important to emphasise safety. Sadly we witnessed loss of life in 2020 at Mullion Cove, due to underestimating the dangers of going near harbour walls even in modest storms,

Agreed. I think they believe it's always bathed in sunshine like in the publicity photos! In reality our winters can be cold, wet and linger, Sarah :)
Great shots of the stormy sea. But you can see how powerful and dangerous the water can be. After such a stormy day, you look forward to a good cup of tea:)) My favourite place to watch the stormy sea is Cape Cornwall. It's fantastic. Thank you both:)

Trelissick Gardens and Carehays Castle have excellent displays. Caerhays has a national collection of Magnolias I think! Sarah :)

Be warned the water can and will creep up on you then it’s to late. You need to have a little more respect and keep your distance. You look for a wave coming over the top but the bad ones come from underneath and then it’s too late.👍

Well done you two ~ that was such good fun! 😊 and has certainly cleared the cobwebs out! My last bit of storm-watching (very tame compared to yours) was from inside the Queen's Hotel Penzance. You could see the powerful waves hit the seawall and spray straight up onto the Promenade, and feel the reverberations come right up through the granite foundations of the hotel!
Oh wow! Similar to having a sea cave under your feet! I wonder if the sea was tracking back through the drains!! I think there are several in the harbour wall, Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails You're exactly right Sarah ~ each impact was like a sea cave boom! That's a good point...I never thought about the harbour wall drains which must backfill with the pressure of the waves. The power of the ocean is an amazing thing :)

Having followed you for a long time now, I can remember all of these vids of your storm chasing. Each one wilder and windier than the last. Storm Eunice just gone with Franklin now blustering its way through again today. Took my husband nearly 4 hours to get home on Friday eventually! Off he's gone again today to face the wind & disruption. Stay safe if you are venturing out to film Franklin. x J x
Such disruption! Of course our public transport in Cornwall is so limited, we hardly ever use it!! I think Eunice was incredible because the storm wind speed was not excessive but the gusts were huge! Oh my goodness! Sarah :)

Sarah and Andrew. Brilliant! Loved all of them. Best place to watch them for me was in bed at 3am this morning when storm Franklin was absolutely battering my home! That was great! I take photos for BBC Weather Watchers and you may have seen some of my photos of the recent storms on the TV from Porth. You gave a real feel for what it is like trying to capture the stormy weather on camera, especially the sound of the wind. Brilliant - thank you!

I loved this! So much boundless energy unleashed. The blowing sea froth was insane. Hard to pick a favorite, though I'm partial to the mine engines which portrayed Grambler Mine in Poldark. In October of 2019 my sister and I sat in my car where Mission Blvd dead-ends at the Jetty and watched lightning over a stormy sea. While I'm only 10 miles from the Pacific coast, it's been hard to get there over the last two years. Your videos are such a treat. :)
Thank you! Oh yes! The Poldark engine house are at Botallack, in the far west of Cornwall, relatively close to Land's End and the most amazing feet of engineering, Sarah :)

Absolutely stunning. You guys really provide excellent videos and entertainment. More important under covid-19 than they were when many were originally recorded. Sea foam was spectacular. Keep up the great work. Loved the ones in places we're missing most. Porthcurno, Sennen, Lands End but so many others. Used to run an 8 mile loop from Sennen to Porthcurno. That's how I found it in 1998. Took the children there. It was magical. Not like the storm video thankfully. Children now 30 and 28 but still in love with Cornwall.

I was there pards
What - no storm footage from Feb 2014, (before storms were named by the Met office). That must have been the biggest ever with some of the boats being sunk in the inner harbour at Porthleven and those huge waves reaching over the cliff tops. The Watering Hole at Perranporth coming perilously close to being washed away, the cafe at Trevaunance cove getting smashed up and, of course the railway at Dawlish being destroyed. I expect it was too rough for you to venture out then.
Before our UA-cam days! That storm took out the monkey hut at the end of Portreath harbour wall I think! Sarah :)

International heroes...
One of my favourite memories of visiting Cornwall was sitting in The Old Success in Sennen, next to the open fire with a pint and eating fish and chips, watching an amazing storm. That incredibly cosy feeling was amazing. I'm in Australia now, and miss Cornwall so much.

Lovely Porthcurno sequence. Reminded me of seeing it like that when I lived there in 1968. Swam there often but not that time.
Luuuv Porthcurno. I was there during a warm September 1997, only about 6 people there n small yacht. The world and his wife goes there now. Thanks to drone footage
