The story of the Navajo Code Talkers in the Pacific in WW2 is absolutely fascinating. There were about 461 total Navajo Code Talkers, 13 of whom sadly were killed in action. The code was never broken. Not even their family members knew of the huge impact of their service because no one revealed the secret until the Code was declassified in 1968. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Navajo Code Talkers.
When I visited Canyon de Chelly in 2018 I bought an autobiography by a Navajo code talker. I was aware of the code talkers from WWII and it was a good read. Also knew of the tragic late 1800’s history of Canyon de Chelly which is why I wanted to go there. When the Navajo or more correctly Dine’ would encounter one another on the tours, they spoke to one another in their Native language. We have reservation land here in Oregon and I’ve always felt like an interloper when I’m on a reservation.

I'm 100% P&T VA rated but I guess I'm the youngster here at 49 in a couple months. Hoping I still have a couple yrs left to travel...currently recovering from hip surgery 12 days ago but doing better than before surgery already.
So a car salesman once said that he makes his money buying cars, not selling them. Ergo, buy a good car thats desirable and in good shape for the right price and you will make money. You need your car mechanics to pre inspect this stuff and not just buy low priced stuff. I am fairly new to channel so maybe that is the model. Definitely don’t replicate whistlin Diesel’s driving abilities!

In 2009 my wife and I were driving near Monument Valley. We stayed at the Holiday Inn located in Keyenta. When we checked in, I told my wife we were going to wake up before dawn and drive to Monument Valley to experience the sunrise. Boy did I get an earfull about the value of sleeping in when on vacation. But, risking the wrath of wifezilla, I woke her up at 04:00. I got very little cooperation that morning, but we made it to Monument Valley just before the sun. As my wife watched and furiously snapped photos, she thanked me over and over. Sunrise in Monument Valley is worth waking up before the sun.

I have been watching for years as well. She tends to have long videos, which I believe will deter people from watching them. Setting aside 25 minutes for a UA-cam video is too much for some people. I think 15 minutes is a good length to get “clicks”.

Wish you’d taken a tour with a Dine guide. They take you to land you can’t see without a Navajo that are amazing. Also good to support the Native Tribe.
In 2002 my 16 year old daughter and I were driving around the 4 corners area, seeing the sights. We stayed one night in a little old motel in Blanding, UT. It took me back to my childhood in the 60's when my parents would take me on vacation and stay at the cheapest little motels they could find; like $4 per night. I really enjoyed the motel, but my daughter was not impressed. I suggested that we take a walk around Blanding that night and see what it's like. My daughter was not impressed. As we walked up Main Street around eight o'clock that night, I was surprised to see a crowd on the sidewalk. I didn't expect to see so many people in Blanding, and went over see what was going on. The crowd was in front of the little movie theater, waiting for it to open and let them in for an evening's entertainment. "Cool," I said to my daughter, "we can see a movie in a little old small town theater." My daughter was not impressed. When I saw the poster for the movie they were showing that night I was taken aback. This was the world premier for the movie Wind Talkers. I had heard the story of the Navajo Code Talkers years earlier, then heard they were making a movie about them, and I was eagerly anticipating the movie so I could learn more about the Code Talkers story. I was shaking with excitement as I paid the $7 admission for both of us. As I surveyed the room, I realized that us white people were a scant minority. The room was full of Native Americans, excited to see their relatives and neighbors in this world premier of a big Hollywood movie. I said to my daughter (who was a bit of a fan of anthropology) that this was a once in a lifetime event for us, and we should take in the energy and brotherhood of the room. My daughter was not impressed. There was a live MC who welcomed us to the simultaneous world premier of Wind Talkers, showing in Hollywood, and Blanding, Utah on that night. Wow! How lucky were we to stumble on to this? The room was abuzz with people talking a mixture of English and Navajo about which of their people they might see on the screen. They talked like that through the whole movie; something that would normally really bug me. But, it added so much to our experience. The movie ended and I was so delighted to have participated in this cultural festival. But, I was also so very disappointed that the movie was awful. It was just a blood and guts vehicle for Nicholas Cage. But the rest of the room loved it. As they left the building, they were chatting furiously about how impressive the whole thing was. As we walked back to our old and cheap little motel room, I told my daughter how I felt almost aglow to have participated in this event. My daughter said she wasn't impressed. But, 20 some years later, she and I can talk about that trip and the memories not only of discovering the Moki Dugway and visiting Monument Valley, but also the honor of being allowed to participate in this great (to us) cultural event. No one else in the world had that experience, and only a few can appreciate what it meant to us. Thank you, Navajo Nation; we are impressed.
We’re from England. Seven years ago we stayed at a small motel just outside the Valley. They were booking personal tours for $20 so we booked it. Next morning at 8.30 this genuine Navajo chap arrived in this old beat up truck. But he was such a great guy and a super guide. Took us all over and round the Valley. But what was awesome he was allowed to go all off road. Took us to all over great places and right up to many of the buttes. Hidden caves and little canyons. Even to a little encampment with genuine tribes folks.
We were away over four hours. Bit uncomfortable at times due to the truck going over some real tough country. But great.
You won’t believe it but all for $20 for the whole four hours. But we gave him a real big tip. (Not true about the Brits ! ). Weather hot and sunny that day and a huge memorable time. 🙋♂️👏👏🇬🇧

The time-lapse of the evening was incredible! The changing sun angles and clouds made different things stand out. Had to go back and rewatch with lots of pauses. Love the desert after a shower! Thank you!

260 million years to make. Water from an inland sea created it's base of shale with sandstone layered over it and over
that time the land rose up the sea ebbed away. Wind, rain, ice, which cracked into the sandstone, and lots of time created
what you see now. Great hike after the "free" breakfast with all that amazing scenery ! 267K subs plus now.

I worked with a few Dene,(should have been Dine) guys while I was working as a boilermaker in the copper industry. Great guys, very welcoming to a lonely kid from the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Nothing but respect to my Native brothers and sisters. Good times with great people! They tried to teach me their language, but I can barely figure out English! LOL!

I was fortunate to have a little navaho girlfriend to walk home from school in early grade school. Her family was working as extras on the western TV show "broken Arrow" and her grown man brothers were very protective, she was very sweet. . She taught our class the hoop dance. we were the only kids who had a " broken arrow " lunch box is how we got together.
Monument Valley is my most favorite place. It is so beautiful, especially in person and a very spiritual ,peaceful place.

Did that loop drive and the hike in one day. Finished the hike in a wind storm 💨. Left there to go to Flagstaff and drove through a snowstorm ❄️. Enjoyed every minute….

Monument Valley also is in about half of John Wayne's movies. There is a place in Monument Valley called John Ford's Point named after film director John Ford due to the fact that many of his westerns where filmed in Monument Valley. This video must be from a little while ago because it is cold in your video, but is probably about 100-degrees out at Monument Valley today.
Absolutely recognize that as John Fords landscape.
What a refreshingly untypical guided tour of one of my favourite places on Earth! Thank you Sarah, I loved your commentary. Visited MV 12 years ago. I didn’t stay at The View. There is one other hotel, Goulding’s. It was the trading post run by a young couple called Goulding. They were befriended by John Ford, who fell in love with the Valley & chose it as the location for so many great westerns. Their original house is now a museum & you can still see the potato store room that was transformed into John Wayne’s quarters in “She wore a yellow ribbon”.
If you do ever come back to MV, I recommend a Navajo guide-led tour. They take you to the places the public can’t go. Mystery Valley lies adjacent to MV. There are many ancient cliff houses there and shards of pottery laying around, often 400+ years old, from the predecessors of the Navajo. There are many petroglyphs to be seen too, painted on the rocks.
My two days there in 2012 are amongst the most memorable days in my life and I’d love to revisit there one day.

What a wonderful place to visit. Photographer's dream in the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Making a big loop across Interstate 40 and up through Monument and across to Kanab and Bryce Canyon and back down through Utah to Nevada and Eastern Sierras is a fun, delightful and scenic trip. I will make that trip after summer is over.

Thanks for mentioning a few important facts about the Navajo! My first visit to this area was inspired by the raw and majestic beauty of the land, but it was also where I was to first learn about the history of the Navajo Nation. The stories they tell aren’t taught in grade school in the US, but should be.
A return visit could include a tour into areas only accessible with a Navajo guide. Jaw-dropping beauty and soul-changing changing stories to be experienced for sure. The Navajo did much of the Cold War era uranium mining near Black Mesa and suffered radiation related diseases that few are aware of. Just ask the Dine.
Thank you Wonderhussy for letting us experience Monument Valley with you! It reminds me of a lot of the old westerns I watched as a kid. It is so peaceful and beautiful there.
About eight years ago I was able to see this area via a geezer bus tour on which we saw Monument Valley, South rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion & Bryce Canyon. They are all spectacular & it is fun to see you go somewhere that I've been before. Thanks.

We went on one of the Navajo guided tours when we were there. Much better than driving around yourself and get to see a lot more
The first one is a sweat lodge. We heat rocks and bring them in. Pour water and sage
This entire region clearly shows just how vast the time scale is, geologically speaking. How long did it take for the plateau to weather away to the scenic views we have now ? Hundreds of thousands of years ? Millions of years ? Anyway, Sarah's editing of her videos has reached a high standard of quality. Well done Sarah.

Great video, but sorry that darned wind didn’t cooperate. Here’s some good advice: Next time you’re there, try staying at the Hampton Inn in Kayenta. I have stayed there a lot. Half the price of The View. Rooms are clean/comfortable and as long as you stay away from the Navajo Taco, the restaurant isn’t too bad either. Navajo ladies in traditional dress are the servers, so that was cool to see.
One correction however: Monument Valley is NOT a National Park, it is a Tribal Park - Big difference! 😉

I travelled around all the side roads around monument valley where the locals lived and couldn’t believe all the recycling lining the sides of the roads. Looks like they keep the tourists loop clean

i traveled all the way from australia to see monument valley. and boy was it worth it. did the 17 mile drive..stayed overnight at goulding lodge just outside the park. woke up to a magnificent sunrise.. i have to get back there one of these days.. love your videos sara
Monument Valley was on the agenda for me and my two sons this spring when we did a Baja road trip but a death in the family meant we had to come home early and missed out on seeing this amazing place. Thanks for the tour! Still on my bucket list!
Not quite 30 years ago, I found Navajo B&B, ”Land of Many Hogans”. I got to stay overnight in a hogan, and the family came to talk story a little later into the night than I was used to. It also had an outhouse and sweat lodge. I got to sleep on layers of sheepskin. The next morning, I went horseback riding to a location that had a thin waterfall. For me and my tight budget, it was actually quite expensive but in today’s dollars what a bargain! And I’m glad I had the opportunity.

You have to give it to the Navajo who knew how to build things.
The Navajo Talker's memorial is inside Burger King. I have been in there several times. My Navajo husband and I stopped there for bathroom breaks. On our way to Shiprock to visit the family.
The Navajo tours are really interesting there. They can take you into areas beyond the designated tourist loop. Our tour guide went to a family members hogan and we were able to ask questions about living there and watch her weave a Navajo rug which was really interesting too. They probably don't want tourists off the office route on hiking around because there are still people living in Monument Valley. Oh and I believe the Code Talkers (also a movie about them) were only in the Pacific Theater of WW II.

So beautiful! You will have to come to the Smoky Mountains for a visit and hike until your heart is content. I’ve only been to Golden and Breckinridge Colorado and thought that area was outstanding also.

Just imagine you are a starving indian, wearing nothing but a loin cloth and mocassins, and you're high on peyote, when a thunderstorm roars through Monument Valley with lots and lots of lightning. Yep, you will definitely believe the place is sacred after that experience!
Next best thing (or possibly better) would be Arches NP. Very similar landscape near the entrance. Amazing buttes, mesas and cliffs you can hike around. The Park Avenue trail.

Another great video! I think the Cameron AZ trading Post has the best Navajo Taco. The fried bread is light and not greasy. It’s a great place to check out. We always stop for a taco whenever we travel by Cameron.
I hope to visit there soon. When I was in that area in 2021 Monument Valley was closed to visitors. I haven’t been back to that area since.

We toured Monument Valley in 1993. Hard to believe more than 30 years ago. I’ve got a great photo of the mittens (@ 5:00). I also remember the 3 sisters at 7:00
Very impressive and fun documentary.
If you make a right turn out of the park. Drive a few miles to where the Mexican hat resides on top of the huge rock.
There is a dirt road across the highwayt from it. Head down that road and you will find stunning formations that are much nicer, and more plentiful than the major Navaho ones.
Mile after mile of magnificence.
Four wheel drive is recommend, but we managed fine with our two wheel drive ram- a-lam- a- ding dong.
