The helical cut gears may be smaller, but as they mech in the middle, they actually end up having a greater surface area in contact than XR gears. It scary to know how little contact there actually is in XR despite their size. No wonder they break, especially if they are the stock Mercury XR gears which seems to be made from chalk these days...

Does the length or shape of the skeg matter?

Great Stuff from a very knowledgeable man , But leave the girl out of it , it detracts from the experience with Bob .
Nothing against Summer , just an unwanted distraction.

I think that there is a huge elephant in your shop, You always seem to fidget when you are asked why you prefer to use the number six drive instead of the number Number eight Drive! Because you are an authorized MerCruiser shop as well as being a standup guy you do not want to bad talk any of their products! It seems to me that you found an issue with the number eight drives, It could be because you found a weak point in those drives or maybe they are just too difficult to modify to work up to your standards with all of the different boat and engine configurations! I could be totally wrong, But something clicked in my head when I heard you say that those drives were built for the new twin turbo Mercury engines!
