I can relate to everything in this video. The M109R wasn’t quite my first bike, I rode a Honda CB600F for a few months first but it was still a massive jump for me when I bought the M109R. I will confess that I spent the first 2 weeks staring at it in awe in the garage 😂 My excuse was waiting for good weather! My philosophy is the same as yours was at the beginning, no matter what the bike is capable of, it will only do what you tell it to with the throttle. So I rode it well within its (and my) limits while I got the feel of it. The weight was intimidating when manouvering around the yard, but out on the road the low seat height means I can flat foot it at the lights. I can absolutely relate to what you said about breaking and the only thing I would change about this bike is to have ABS. Just like you, I had a close encounter with a truck that stopped suddenly but here in U.K. the roads are narrow and there was no chance to swerve. I wasn’t so lucky, I avoided hitting the truck and didn’t think I’d snatched the brakes but suddenly I was on the floor… in my case it was the front wheel that locked up. Cost me around 4000 dollars to fix everything and I now have a bone in my shoulder slightly displaced, but could’ve been much worse as I was wearing normal jeans that day (stupid I know.) I went over the whole thing in my mind many times and concluded that I had gone immediately for the front brake without using the rear which would’ve been OK on the Honda, but the weight distribution on a cruiser is different and there wasn’t enough weight already loaded on the front when the brake was really biting. Now it’s 50/50 front and rear, and keep going with the front as the weight moves forward. Cornering was another thing, apart from scraping the pegs a couple of times on the twisties, I soon figured that cornering on a bike this long with that big fat rear tyre trying to keep you straight requires special attention and needs to be planned well ahead. About that screen, mine actually came with the V Stream fitted, and I agree the bike probably looks better on the street without it but I kept it because of the occasional longer runs I do. I don’t regret going straight from the 600 to the M109R, it is all the bike I ever wanted, and now that I have got used to its specific characteristics I allow for them as second nature. Just like you I’ve been a road user for decades which has helped keep me out of trouble, sometimes I even think riding occasionally is safer because every time I get in the saddle I have that slight fresh tingle of nerves as my senses sharpen up and stay focused, and although I’m very comfortable on the bike these days, that is something I don’t ever want to lose by getting complacent. Ride safe buddy! 👍
The M109R is an awesome first bike!!!! I bought my first bike (an M109R a little over a year ago) I thought I was the only one that has ever done this!
You guys are encouraging me to do the same. I'm in the same boat....no license yet. Just concerned about the weight for a first bike coming in as 764 lbs. I'm 5'10" 205 lbs .

I got my license at 17, and started on a 75 CB750. It was more bike than I ever needed back in the early '90s. Weel after nearly 30 years without, the bug bit me again. I wanted a mid-level "beginner" bike to get my sea legs back, but i just couldn't find something that fit me right in the smaller class. The M109R was one of my 3 finalists, but i ended up with a Yamaha Warrior 1700. I know what you're talking about, with that 1st gear throttle sensitivity! I almost slid off the back of her a couple weeks ago... a light turned green while I was slowing down, then rolled on the throttle in 2nd gear 😂

Dude, thank you for an exhilarating ride! I'm 72 and have owned at least a dozen motorcycles. My last one was a 2008 HD Fat Boy which took me all over Southern California and yes, all year round, even up into the San Bernardino Mountains as long as snow and ice was not an issue. That's my favorite ride...fresh mountain air. Using your GoPro and comm as you rode just made it as though I was the rider. As soon as our governor gives us our "get outta jail" card I'm heading up to PA to look at a M109. I sold my Fat Boy in 2014 and decided to give up riding...wrong decision. I found myself while on lock down gravitating towards motorcycle videos and missing the experience. I couldn't help but notice your tank bag and I always rode with one, keeping my EDC items, maps, even a small thermos with either coffee or a cold drink in it. Great stuff...stay safe!

I'm in the DC metro area so being that most people are off from work, there's virtually no traffic so I finally get to "enjoy" my rides. I wish you luck in getting a 109. They are beautiful machines! Did you ever buy another bike. My case is similar…gave up riding thinking I was done for 3 years, now I have the itch again 67yrs old. Been really wanting to buy a fat boy and wondered how it compares to M109 (I owned two 109s) maybe 3 if fat boy doesn’t pan out? Hope this response finds you well thanks

I am in a similar position. 41 years old, and I bought my first ever motorcycle a couple months ago to be my new daily driver. 2005 Honda VTX 1800. I completed the MSF riders course 10 years ago, then I did not end up getting a bike. I took the MSF course again last month after buying my 1800. Its a big bike, but I am having a blast! The M109R caught my eye, but I think one muscle cruiser is good enough for me...for now. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.
I just bought a vtx1800 as my first bike! 38 years old. Haven't ridden it yet as I'm taking the MSF course before I do. Any advice?
You're smart and I like your level of maturity. A mature person can start on a powerful bike like this. Hey I'm 67 and ride my Cbr1100xx to work and back in rush hour highway St Louis, very dangerous. I found it best to go as fast as the fastest traffic left lane, look far ahead and always be ready when it all comes to a sudden stop! Luv your bike! John.

Hi there Dread, Mike B here from California and a new Sub'd to your channel. I LOVE the layout and look of your channel right away because it's different and you put a lot of hard work into it for our enjoyment. That's badass and does not get overlooked by me, brother. I'm a re-entry rider, just got a 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 750 in perfect turn key condition, and a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic that needs to go through the shop, but DAMN I'm So happy to be back riding ! EDIT : HOLY MOLEY you must be insane, at 1783 cc motor. Brother, you have my UTMOST respect. I rode Honda XR80's in junior high, and then had CB750, Interceptors, Harley, but NOTHING like that MONSTER.
If your speedo is off a bit, one of the first and the easiest things you can check, is tire size, compare the recommended stock size to what you're wearing, many people change out the stock tires for a fatter one, and fail to get the sidewall height correct in the process.

I bought a Honda Shadow 750 for my first bike. My wife was anti-motorycle, so i never considered the passenger seat when buying a bike.
I WHIPPED that shadow. For exactly 3 weeks.
In week 2 i got my wife on the back. She loved it. I immediately looked for a big touring bike with a bigger, more comfortable back seat. Went up to a Vulcan 1700 with V&H, pC5, Ivanized, and put a batwing on it. The increased power and weight made me slow down. Im actually way more careful BECAUSE of the power, weight and cost.
Dont get a beginner bike. Get your ideal bike. Its better to be scared for the first 100 miles than it is to be comfortable.

We have the same taste. I have the same bike, color, and exhaust. Love it. The best part is all the attention it gets parked next to much more expensive Harley's. Having something different was one of my main motivations for choosing the 109. That plus I am 6'3" so the big bike is a great fit for me.

I have an 2009 roadglide, had an 09 m109r traded it in for the HD. Missed the hell out of the m109r. Now a got a candy red 2021 m109r and I luv it. The roadglide comes out every now and then lol.

You're absolutely right and I understand that now, however, I have a wife to answer to and she wasn't having it. LOL
m109r was my first bike too.. Went form a 80cc bike during my training course directly to a 109. bought it used with custom pipes, a power commander fuel system, k@n air filter. Practiced in a parking lot with the 109 every night for 3 weeks before I could get it to corner without stalling or dropping it. ( I dropped it twice.). The throttle is super twitchy so I installed a throttle tamer and an automatic timing retarder eliminator, really makes the bike much easier to control.
I hear you loud and clear. That twitchy throttle was killer for me. Before I got the ECU flashed, I learned to feather the clutch and it became second nature in the turns. The ECU flash smoothed it out pretty nicely. How long have you had yours?
@@Dreadpool-BRMC my 3rd season comming up. Live in edmonton, only have 5 months a year to ride it but am on it every day that weather allows. ECU flash was done when the power commander was installed.

There are advantages to riding a big bike. I did my learners on a 70cc small bike. It was shocking how many cars pulled out in front of me. Cut me off. Tried to merge into me. I wondered how bike riders survived. I ditched the small bike and bought the biggest bike available at the time. A big black cruiser. Instantly riding became safer. Cars seen me, heard me, got outta my way.
I can relate to this statement to a degree. I say to a degree because I don’t have my license or a bike. However growing up I rode dirt bikes and about 5 years ago I visited my father and he and my step mom rode. I went riding with my father a lot. He had a Honda VTX 1800 and my step mom had the 1300. I rode the 1300 first then my fathers. After getting on the 1800 there was no way I could ride the smaller one. The larger bike felt safer and being a big guy, it was just more comfortable for me in every way. He sold the 1300, my step mom took that and he picked up a Rune. That bike was a beast and rode as smooth as a Cadillac. I lost my father last October and I’m now 50 and decided now is the time for me to get my license and a bike and enjoy. I’m eyeing M109’s as my first bike and planning when to take my course. Safe riding!

You nailed my exact experience coming from the msf class to riding my first bike in my 40's. Whoa!. I went honda shadow spirit 1100 to start though. I can't imagine jumping on that thing for the first ride. I just upgraded a year later to a 2010 bmw k1300gt and it felt the same as getting on the shadow. Wow. Starting all over.

My first bike was a 2008 yamaha warrior 1700. Crazy bike but I respect it’s power and weight and I learned how to ride on it by myself. Wouldn’t do it any other way
Great video and nice bike. And I appreciate your input and you sharing your experiences. I might suggest that you increase following distance given the standard brakes on that bike. The near miss accident with the pick up truck you described is a case in point. Not only was it impossible for you to make an emergency stop, the person behind you did not have enough time to react either. Increasing your following distance would make it safer for you from what is in front of you, and what is behind you.

I know this is a late comment lol. I found your channel and this vid while researching the M109R. If I pull the trigger this will be my 6th bike, When I bought my first bike, I went for my dream bike that I had always wanted...Harley Road King, and after one ride...she had to go lol so I traded for a Harley dyna low rider. That bike was a lot easier to ride, but I still didn't feel it. I was starting to think it was because maybe I just "thought" I wanted to ride, so I gave it another try and bought a sportster...turns out, it was just Harleys that were the let down to me. I built them up too high in my mind all the years of dreaming about them, then they didn't live up to my vision of being this badass biker ripping down the road lol. I then rode a buddies Honda shadow and loved it, then got one, still have it, got a VTX1300, loved it, traded up to the VTX1800 awesome bike. and now im ready for the beast of cruisers...the M109R!!!

At 43 it was time for me to transition from sport bikes but didn't want to go full bagger or touring, and definitely didn't want to give up performance. After a lot of research I bought my '17 late in '18 season. Wanted the grey but got a great deal on the blue/black. Did 10k miles and 18 states last season. You cant beat a 9 for the money.

Had a hard shell bug hit my finger..
After the ride , I dug out bug stuff with tweezers.
Went to the bone..got infected..
Dug it out and disinfected it.. could still see bone... left a scar..!
Had a lug nut bounce across the freeway,I was going 85 mph far left lane, lug nut came from other side.
Hit my windshield,ricocheted off my helmet,got metal and plastic windshield spec’s in my face.
Without the wind shield..most likely I would have crashed.
I f your going to haul ass ,and ride a lot.. get stuff to help you survive encounters...!

Very impressive feedback. I have put the windscreen back on and I do have a nice sized tank bag with some essential. I always ride with a full faced helmet as well. As I go out more, I realize a few additional things that I should carry so my list continues to grow. Thanks for your feedback and continue to stay safe!
Dreadheaded 9er I wear a modular full face helmet in cool and cold weather.
In the Texas summer heat.. full face is just to hot.. I can’t believe how much sweat fills my helmet like a sponge, and pours down my front and back.. after riding I get off my bike and would be dizzy and in need of huge amounts of rehydration.
I wear a white tee shirt and a white half helmet with sunglasses,gloves, jeans and boots.
Much cooler and seldom do I get dizzy, unless I stay out to long on a very hot day.
During the heat of summer I go out at first light , till noonish..
Or from about 5pm till dark 30..!
Almost 9-9:30 pm.
Wearing black made me see a lot of cars almost pull out in front of me(had a spill 5 months back because he didn’t C me)
Cost him near 10k at 30 mph nicked and fell..!
Wearing white.. I’m a big fella6,2 255 lbs.. they C me much better now.
Almost no almost pulled out in front of me scenarios....
It was quite often before I rode in white during the day.. I drive at night a little.. I drive the lights, especially at Christmas time... I’m off the road way before 10 pm when the drunks begin to shift around to other bars till they find a good place to get good and drunk before driving home🙁
LOL, I did the same thing. Had been trying, but finally bought another bike to learn on. It’s such a beast. Good job sticking with it!!!

M-109 is a seriously sexy beast. Last bike I rode was an old 76 1/2 Electraglide back in the late 80s. I salute your bravery man...😁 that’s a heck of a first bike.

Got myself a 2016 B.O.S.S. same as yours. I love it. Still need to do some visual mods to it to clean it up, but I get so many compliments when I'm out on it.

I think I may be in your same situation. I found a beautiful M109 and im still new at riding but very mature to know to respect the power. The price i can't pass up though even though I only have a month of riding.

Yes sir! I'm getting the Avon Cobra Chrome's before spring.
@@Dreadpool-BRMC , I love mine. The Dunlop's have a flatter profile and turning is not very natural feeling. The Avon's have a rounder profile and the bike turns as you think about it, no forcing needed. Have fun!

You're more brave than me lol i started on a m50 boulevard, then went to a gsxr 600, and NOW i have a m109r 😂 it was a comfortable progression for me
I ride a Honda Fury....husband has the 109r....Harleys wanna race it and are soon discouraged. I go get on it to let my husband listen to it. That thing will pull your hands is the grips if you punch it. It's a combo of the crotch rocket and a cruiser. I rode his first 109 that was built out to 2200cc...FUN TIMES. Love the non Harley!

I had a honda shadow 600vlx and m90 before getting my 9 and have no regrets cuz I appreciate my 9 so much more because of it. Okay I saw your video back a few years ago. I have been researching the M109R and really getting into that bike. I bought a Honda 1100 VT and have been riding it for well up until now and in the future most likely. I say that because I just bought my dream bike. The M109R. I have to pinch myself.
Long story short I am now watching your video again.
I have to say, everything that you described about the first time you're on the highway and every feeling you had was exactly my experience getting on the highway on my Honda with trucks passing me by. not because I was unable to keep up but because the wind and everything else was a bit overwhelming. My speedometer was off a bit so I thought I was keeping up but of course I was not. It was seriously intimidating and a bit nerve-racking. It took getting used to.
Now of course it's cake.
Fast forward to the M109R....
I am waiting for the weather to break to take my new bike and open her up a little. I only drove her home 23 mi from the dealership in basically rush hour traffic.
I started on a ninja 650, rode it for about 6 months. Just recently sold it and got my Bully and LOVE IT! The weight takes some getting used to, but i'm loving the power and grunt from the pipes. I plan on keeping this bike for a long time.

Thanks man! I would have never imagined that the experience on a sports bike would be similar, especially being behind fairings and in the tucked position. It is amazing how you think that you are traveling at a decent speed according to the speedometer but in your mind, you are traveling at warp speed, holding on for dear life! I knew a guy who bought a M-109 for his first bike after I discouraged him and asked him to buy something smaller and less powerful. He didn't and promptly fell three times then he promptly sold it and bought Victory trike. It's not a beginner bike, it's heavy and corners a little differently because of the fat rear tire.

MY first owned bike as well. Take your time an learn your bike. There are many vids on the 109. Mine Is an 06. Easy into your curves till. You get comfortable with your lean angels. Most important thing that I have learned is ride with someone that can show you how to ride your safest ride.
Very good advice. I linked up with a local group and everyone has 109's. That quickly built my confidence. There are about 40 of us!

This was my 2nd bike.my first one was a yamaha vstar650 wich i sold after 2 weeks after buying it.The m109r was a dream to ride.now i'm riding a suzuki gsx s1000 but i'm saving to buy another m109r.

Man That's was my first bike also! I got it for the same reason, I didn't want a super sport or a slow cruiser and I didn't want a beginner bike that I couldn't sell easy, so the 2018 M109 boss was my choice. A year later I traded it and brought a 2019 Busa, I"m 45 and I figured I'll do my sport bike thing now since I'm still young and the Busa is comfortable. I do miss my M109, BTW If you tac out 4th gear to the 7-71/2 rpm, you can peg out that needle to 150mph and she'll hold! Take your time til you get comfortable before running it like that but when you can, you can keep up with the sports (600cc)
I understand! I thought about getting the Diavel or XDiavel but I'm going to stick with the M109r for now and add-on to the stable a bit later. Be safe out there!

I agree 100%!! If you get this bike as a first bike, it does take discipline and respect of what it is. It's been a few years now and I don't pretend to be an advanced rider on this bike. It is a joy and a thrill that I want to continue. Stay safe!

Congratulations Joseph! Just take it easy. The first time out can be very intimidating. Even once you think you have a grasp of her, don't get too comfortable and take risks just yet. There is a lot to learn about the abilities of this bike. She is very powerful and while the breaks are solid, it doesn't take much to lock-up your tires. Give yourself plenty of room. The first thing I did was practice my turns and learning the friction zone of the clutch. Without any modification to your fuel delivery via a flash or power commander, trying to take turns with consistent power can be tricky. Hit me up if you have questions! Enjoy your new beast!
Used the 109 as my first bike too. May I recommend a throttle tamer till you get your first season in? Lastly make sure you can lift the bike on your own, you will drop it eventually and an 800lb bike is not for everyone.

This bike and the Kawasaki ZX 1400 seem to be old school bikes they just leave them with no driving AIDS but the prices are good on both and the performance is great.
richard I love that the Bully has no computer aids and is very simple. Simply a good old fashioned bike that puts a big grin on your face every time you ride.
Great video. I am also thinking about purchasing that model motorcycle. You mentioned the close call with a pickup. Something that I learned from my riding experience, that might help. Or maybe you already do this technique is to approach stops with extra space between the vehicle in front of the bike and the vehicle behind you. I use my mirrors to observe the approaching vehicle and the extra space in front of me allows me to move up, if needed. Or if the exit lane is occupied. I appreciated and enjoyed your video very much. I rarely comment on the plethora of videos I watch but thought maybe it would help. Rubber down. I cant wait to ride this beautiful machine.

Yes, I agree with you completely in terms of giving yourself space, especially with such a heavy bike that lacks ABS. In the instance that I described, the guy slammed on the brakes without warning because he realized he was going to miss his turn. He slammed on the brakes so hard that he almost caused a pileup of cars even once I had gotten out of the way. But yes, you will certainly enjoy the experience on this machine and there's always something that you can do to it to make it your own. Enjoy the ride and stay safe!

I bought a 2015 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic as my first bike, learned to drive motorcycle with it for one summer and about 1500km then got the bike I really wanted a 2018 2300cc Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster :)
I had moto cross bikes as a kid but the m109 was my first cruiser too. I have some Viking leather wrapped bags and looking to get a Viking leather wrapped trunk. With the 109 you have the option of low and slow or on the hi way go like the wind
Absolutely Steven! I looked at a small messenger type bag made by Viking. I think I'll get some for road trips, but keep them off when I don't need them. There are just so many options!

It’s half way through the season now but I’m about to get my permit and get this or the M90 and I like the tip about watching crash videos. My first bike was a Yamaha Raider 1900cc still have it. It was very intimidating at first. Smooth cornering was the hardest thing because of the torque and not having a smooth throttle hand.
That's a nice bike! How long have you had it? Yes, I hated that twitchy throttle, but once I got the ECU flashed, it was a completely different experience.

I am late to the party but just happened upon your video. I know people always say certain bikes are not for beginners and I had that issues many years ago when I got a Hayabusa. Honestly, I feel like it depends on the rider. Riding is not for the weak at heart but you also must know you are not invincible, and somewhere in the middle is your ability. I know people who get Glides for their first bikes and get way less stigma. If you are confident enough and your ability is right, you don't have to start on a 250 or 500, because in the end every rider is learning no matter how many years they have been riding. I hope you are still enjoying your bike because it is a beauty.
PS... Hampton Roads Area happens to be nice most of the year..

I bought a 2019 Suzuki M109R BOSS as my first bike also and didn’t even had a motorcycle endorsement either. Just want to say I love the M109, it’s gorgeous and it’s powerful! Definitely not a beginner bike BUT if you respect it, she’ll be nice to you and soon you’ll be falling in love with it.

The reason for a starter bike is you are going to drop it. It's cheaper to drop a starter than an expensive new bike. Dropping the bike is part of the learning process so be safe and enjoy the nice bike...

Love your bike man. The M109R is a beast. I have an M50 myself and also noticed my speedometer is about 5 mph off, too. I was wondering if that was a Suzuki thing.

It looks like I am going to get me a 109 in a month. It is more old school (no modern electronics , like you said ) Have you learned how to adjust the suspension and tire pressure for your weight and riding conditions? And adjusting the rider triangle ? These help you control the bike and not the bike controlling you. When I started riding, I assumed that everything was preset just like a car.

I owned a new M109R and there is no reason why you cant have one as a first bike. Its not outrageously fast unless you jam on the throttle. I enjoyed owning it but I didnt like a weird vibration in the front end above 80mph. I sold it after 5 years and bought a new 2018 VMax.
I agree with you in terms of it not being outrageously fast. I think that the torque and the twitchy throttle will get a new rider during turns, where you need to be smooth and steady. That was my biggest issue until I learned the bike. The flashing of the ECU got rid of that as well. I haven't had any vibration in the front end above 80 mph but I've heard some of the same feedback and once they got rid of the factory front tire, it cut that down. I also have weighted bar-ends as well so there's that. How do you like the VMax?
