  • Known for his continuous hard work and tenacity, pacer Makhaya Ntini has carved a special place in the folklore of world cricket. Coming from Mdingi, a small town near Eastern Cape Town.
At the age of 15, Ntini was noticed by Raymond Booi, who gave him support and encouragement to play cricket.
After doing exceedingly well, Ntini made his ODI debut for South Africa against New Zealand in a round-robin game of the Carlton United Series played in Australia. He bowled well and claimed 2 for 31 in his ten overs.
In 2000, Ntini made a comeback to the national side for the tri-series in Sharjah. He bowled well and claimed five wickets.
In 2003, Makhaya became the first South African pacer to take 10 wickets at Lords. It was due to splendid bowling performances that helped South African maintain their winning streak against England at the venue.
With Allan Donald sporadic appearances, he formed a lethal new-ball pair with Shaun Pollock, who was the captain of the South Africa from 2000 till 2003.
With Allan Donald retiring from international cricket, Ntini showed leadership qualities and quickly became the leader of the bowling unit.
In 2003, Ntini bowled exceedingly well in red-ball cricket and claimed 59 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 26.54 with four five-for and one ten-for to his name. He was equally impressive in one-day cricket that year as he picked up 50 wickets at an average of 23.92.
He currently records the hold for South Africa for best bowling figures in a Test match. In 2005, Ntini decimated West Indies at Port of Spain and finished with figures of 13 for 132.
