  • Day 2: Walking Wainwright's Coast 2 coast: Ennerdale Bridge to Borrowdale - 14.5 miles.
After a well received rest at the Shepherds Arms in Ennerdale bridge we set out for the hike. It was basically split into 3 sections. Get past Ennerdale water, go through the forest and climb up a huge valley.
We set out with a hot chocolate made in the hotel snuggly packed in out bags. Walking past Ennerdale water was our first little break. After the forest and at the foot of the first big climb we chanced upon a hostel called BLACK SAIL YH. see here: tinyurl.com/47... This is a super cool little honesty cafe where you can shleter and look after yourself leaving the payment on the side.
    Overview
Location, location, location. Quite simply, that is what YHA Black Sail is all about. Remote and accessible only on foot, it’s a unique rural retreat that lovers of the great outdoors can normally only dream about.
Located in a traffic-free valley, it’s as tranquil as a stay in the Lakes gets. Those on walking, hiking and climbing holidays will value the superb access to nearby peaks including Great Gable, Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple.
Whilst here we got chatting to another group and had a nice cup of tea with them. Our companions for the rest of the walk were also heading to Borrowdale YH: tinyurl.com/37... This was one of the best YH I have stayed in. It felt like an alpine chalet and was super friendly and hospitable.
On the way we passed Honister Pass which is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria, England. It is located on the B5289 road, linking Seatoller, in the valley of Borrowdale, to Gatesgarth at the southern end of Buttermere. There is a lovely slate mine and tea shop here.
You can research all you need about the tea room here

The "runoff" pool is a settling pool - water used to lubricate and cool the slate cutting blades is emptied into there to allow the solids to settle out rather than dump them into local waterways.

Thanks for letting us know. That sounds a lot more environmentally friendly. Cheers Rich

It was pretty bleak in some places. High, wet and windy. But still enjoyable nonetheless. The next leg is up and over Helvellyn. It's a shame we missed the summit but the weather wasn't great
