Todd I'm not sure if you have gotten the troopy FUEL PROBLEM solved yet, but it sounds like a problem I was having several years ago. In the fuel tank there was a sock filter. Trash in the tank would occasionally gather around it and starve the car of fuel. I never knew when it would happen. I would sit for a while and the car would run fine again for a while or a long time. The mechanic pulled the fuel tank down cleaned it out and I never had the problem again. OK now it sounds like you did get the problem solved.

Bit late now but we always carry spare filters when we go bush, especially diesels. The main filter is under the manual hand/ bleeding pump. Out there you don’t know how clean their fuel is, the fuel filter is a piece of piss to replace, if you don’t know how to do it, just look it up on UA-cam!

Hi Todd again, 😊 the fuel filter every 3 months. You can get bad fuel any time though, Diesel engines won't run at all with water or an air leak, where a Petrol will, you will always limp home with a petrol engine, pour Methylated spirits in fuel the water will burn with the fuel, learned off of Outboard engines. Love your channel mate keep up the good work, 🤗🤗🤗.

Hey Todd and family. Those Hmong Villages were impressive, the strip where those knives were, very interesting. The place where it was "Street Food City" looked very good also.Glad you got the troopy sorted ,and cheap too. Mechanical labour charges here in Oz ( 2024) is a lazy $130 hour ( aprox ). It's all relevant ,I know. Great video again mate. Cheers

hi Todd. you need to look for after market fuel filter with a drain plug on the bottom. it's a good habit to drain the dirty fuel out every morning when you check the oil and water. you may need to fit a electric primer pump so you don't have to bleed the system of air.

Excellent indeed! 😏 I believe that Mina has the best developed sense of humor for any 7 year old ever. Very well developed! I'm so proud of my niece and I'm proud of you and Neenee for all you've accomplished with Mina .most kids have a narrow field of interests,,not our girl. Shes interested in EVERYTHING! She reminds me of ,,,me when I was that age. I know this trip was a bit of a disappointment to you,,but it's easily redoable. Have fun brother! Ttyl,,,Marlon

Great temple, you know how much I love the temples in all Asian countries. Nice place you stayed last night, and that getting splashed with mud on white shorts must of been really fun. So now the ride is not running full speed, what a pain that can be. Love this market, it has so many good things to eat, makes me hungry Todd, your killing me mate or my stomach I should say. Wanting to eat most of what I see and wanting to try some of those nice fruits. Nice gentleman you ran into who lives in California America was a rightly nice fellow. Glad to know it was just the fuel filter. Good luck on the road mate and thanks again for those lovely black and whites photos, you have a nice talent for photography Todd or Nenee if she took them. 🙏 bless you Todd, Nenee and Mina my favorite mates living in Lao with all the very nice people.

Beside the engine on the left hand side or just follow fuel line to find it . Wow glad you got it fixed mate. Hopefully the mechanic changed that primary first filter.

I didn’t mind as it’s the adventure I set out for .. village people always helped push the bike up the bad mud hills 🙏🙏 so helpful n kind ..spending most of my life on Motocross bikes really was so valuable with my travels .. certainly one of my most memorable rides 👍🤣🙏

Hi Todd, I tend to agree with the fuel problem. You have a mechanical pump on top of the injector pump mate, if you get stuck, disconnect the fuel line from the pump and blow down it, then suck to make sure it is clear, you can pump that pump up and down to clear air or water and refill with fuel, reprime if you ever run out of fuel. When you get back home, drop the fuel you've got left, flush the tank and sub tank of any rubbish, check for air leaks,, cracks around souldering as well. Have a great trip, good luck, enjoy, 😊👍.

Good day Mina, Neenee and Todd. Looks like you made a wise decision to return and get Troopy looked at! This adventure has all the twists and turns of an Agatha Christie mystery. And that's all before you get too far off the beaten track! I wonder how many animals and birds on that wildlife stall were endangered species, but I guess that if you live out in the forests and jungles of Laos you have to catch what you can to put food in your belly and try and sell the excess. That whole market was fantastic and you always manage to get some cool shots for your end sequence. God bless you all, always 😀❤🙏

If you plan to carry a spare fuel filter it would be a good idea to do a little practice run. Know where it is on the engine. How's the access? Filter wrench that will reach it. Plastic gloves unless you want to smell like diesel fuel for hours. A small bottle of citress smelling hand cleaner because you will still get diesel on you. Haha. Hopefully you can do the change where there is fuel available because you should fill the new filter before installing otherwise it will take forever to get the filter full unless the troopy has a hand pump on the injection pump. Be a good thing to find that out before needed. There may be a plunger you unscrew then pump it till you have stiff resistance then screw back in. Done.....the resistance felt means it's full of fuel.

The guy bouncing the tire to get it up to shoulder level to get it back on was worth the price of admission. Please check with some Pabans about the safety of a foreigner camping along the road. Although Lao is a very safe country you would be a very tempting target for some bad guys. Very low chance of something bad happening but still. Going back to the nearest village would be safer and the interactions with the people would be very interesting.

Could also be a vacuum pulled in you tank?
If vacuum is the case, open your gas cap a little.
If it is solved by crackiopen the gas cap. You gas tank vent is plugged. Look for the gas tank vent line obstruction.
Once had the same issue on a KLR. Was a dirt sober nest.

Sounds like a fuel pump or fuel pump assembly problem. Check the rubber fittings and make sure it’s sucking from the bottom from the tank. Flush and drain the tank. Clear all the fuel lines and put a new filter on it. Ensure the return line and vent/evap system is clear and functioning.

Knew your problem was diesel fuel block. My friend has a early Great Wall Ute "rodeo model" that did same thing of no power. A mechanic told us that it has rubber bladder section on the fuel line under the front door, you can squeeze and pump to clear the diesel block. Very old school but fixes problem straight away for a few months at least.

The Troopy problem makes me think of the old "gag" played on people you really didn't like - putting a ping pong ball into the gas tank! It would float along and everything would be fine and then it would float and block the gas from leaving the tank and the car would stop.
Hope this is an easy and quick fix for you.

  • @heymaddo

G'day mate, love the adventure, but do yourself a big favour and put a glass bottom fuel separator and carry extra filters !! The fuel separator will let you see when you get shitty fuel thus preventing this ever happening again and flush the fuel tanks clean , a small cost for less pain in the middle of nowhere , hope this helps in the future..
    Catchya...

Sounds like the fuel starvation problem might have been fixed but, something very simple to check and rule out if it happens again. From what you describe it seems to happen when the engine is working hard and needing fuel volume. If it does it again, stop and very quickly just remove the tank Filler cap(s) and, listen if there is a sudden suction of air into the tank. It would show if the tank is venting properly and not pulling a vacuum, IE. if the vent might be partially clogged with dirt, quite possible in that environment.
It's unlikely but it does happen and it's an instant check you can quickly do yourself..
Just this old 'git thinking outloud, I'm a long time retired and confess I'm not familiar with the troopy.
Have a great trip and stay safe. Cheers from Phil (UK).

When I was leaving in Africa, during the dry season, I faced the same kind of issue and eventually after lots of trouble shooting, I find out that it was the tiny vent hole in the fuel tank cap that was clogged with dust, hopefully the fuel tank did not implode as I saw on another car.

Shit fuel is a possibility todd, one trick is when fueling up , pump some diesel into a glass jar carefully, check jar, you will be able to see water on the bottom of jar, as water is heavier than Diesel. Other than that, fuel filter or clogged air filter. I've been on the worst roads in Australia, N.T never had a problem with dust affecting my cruiser. It wiil be interesting to find out the problem. You could undo the injector lines individually, the Diesel will squirt out, engine must be running to do this test. Remember undo lines one by one, not all at once.
