Hate that you're destroying stems "that potentially have insects in them." Why not leave them until spring or stick them into the dirt, giving the hibernating bees/insects inside them a chance to live and become next year's pollinators?
What about the rest of the hydrangeas your showing us something that maybe we don't even have a fireplace. Are we supposed to clip the rest of them? We really could use more information
