For as popular as Total was in the 90's hip hop/ rnb community, they had trouble finding mainstream solo chart success. They had some top 20 hits on the hot 100, but their only solo song to crack the top 10 was "trippin" at #7. Their guest and featured appearances is where they had the most success. "Loungin" with LL Cool J got to #3 and "Hypnotize" with Biggie got to #1. The dominant 90's consumers were mostly made up of generations that were exposed to previous decades of vocally powerful female groups. Groups like the Supremes, the Vandellas, Labelle, the Ronettes, the Emotions and The Pointer Sisters (to name a few) were the standards that Total didn't live up to. Total was the only well known 90's rnb group that wasn't bringing strong vocals to their singles. I believe that affected their mass appeal. Where TLC was the perfect blend of style and substance, Total was all the style without the substance. Today's music scene is far more vocally forgiving. Total would've had a better career if they came out today. While I love their style and the creative perspective that they brought to music, I still believe, that by the late eighties /90's generation not taking musicians like Madonna and other popular musicians to task for producing less than stellar vocals, we opened up the pandora's box that led to horrors of today's popular music. Check out "90's girl" by the group Blackgirl. It's one of those catchy songs that makes you forget the gender specific lyrics. I remember one time singing this in the shower thinking I was home alone. I came out to find my step-dad in the hallway. We made eye contact briefly then awkwardly passed each other. You'll understand if you ever listen to this song. Also, the group Divine. Their debut single "lately" shattered all expectations and shot to the top of the charts. Most people don't know the group, but they know the song. The group For Real was the opposite of Divine. They had critical acclaims, award nominations, movie music work, Brian McKnight! Their singles "you don't wanna miss" and "you don't know nothing" got a lot of airplay on BET and the rnb/hip hop parts of MTV. Despite all the backing and their immense talent, they didn't take off. Not on the hot 100 or even on the rnb charts. They had a song on the Waiting to exhale soundtrack called "love will be waiting at home." The decision not to release it as a single was a career defining moment as it was almost assured to be a hit. It's a hauntingly beautiful ballad that tugs at all the right emotions. It's one of those songs you get lost in and let it take you to a place of total tranquility.
This is why 90's hip hop is missed so much. Look at the background of what was coming out then. Mobb Deep. Mary J My Life, The Roots, 2Pac Me Against The World. It was crazy!
