I like your videos so much!! Because many times you make a simple thing so valuable. This is a clear example of that. One of the best and clear videos on seasoning a pan, explained and true point to point. It is seasoning AND maintenance!! Now, let me tell you...if you season a cast iron with mangalitza lard, I will eat it...the pan! With no hesitation, wether steel or iron, will taste so good!!! LOL!!! GAVE YOU A BIG LIKE FOR THIS VIDEO MY FRIEND!!! Regards from Chicago. Fred.
Happy thanksgiving eve everyone. Hope you all have a great holiday with some great food and love with your families. Remember to enjoy every second because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
@McGieHomesteadAdventures well, I wanna say I think we are all thankful for you your channel and the advice you give we are also thankful for and still miss Frank as well, hope he is doing well. You are good folks for sure, all of you all.
There's nothing like cooking with a cast iron skillet , I've got 2 a small one I use to make the best cornbread & the big one for frying the best chicken , porkchops , side meat , country ham & etc like you said you have to keep em well seasoned in the grease they will rust . I'm in my 50's I was raised up living off the land growing your own vegetables , fruit tree's & raising your own farm animal's for meat that's the good life & living that's why I love your video's I know where you coming from & it's all good👍
I currently have a 15 inch cast iron skillet that quite literally has not been washed in over 70 years Mom and Granny after using it would just wipe it out and gently bake it with new lard rubbed on and it has never had a sticking problem none the least. And it's my favorite kitchen tool next to my Dexter chefs knife that grandpa put deer antler handle scales on . Love the channel, God bless you and yours.
Timely video on Thanksgiving Eve - how to extend the life of your cast iron by careful maintenance! An old art school teacher of mine said - take care of your tools and your tools will take care of you. The husband and I have cast iron pan for more than 25 years with no wear or replacement. I came to my senses early on and got rid of my cheapo cookware, especially the 'non-stick' stuff that I had to replace every couple of years. Good to see the McGie summer kitchen worked out. I recall that video and unloading the stove from the truck. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours plus all the McGie fans out there. If you are traveling, get there safe and then back safe.
Over the summer I restored two pieces of cast iron, a number 8 and my wife's great grandmother's two burner griddle. They were very crusty, and I used electrolysis. A couple of days in the bath and years of build up came off and some elbow grease and the pans are like new. I used coconut oil to season them in the oven. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone... remember we're here for a short time love one another, let's not hate.
I really enjoyed the video ! We could never keep a decent cast iron pan but my grandma sure did . I always thought she fried the best hamburgers in her pan . Thanks for sharing and have a great day !
Good morning. Great instructional video. I’ve used cast iron all my life, and EVERYTHING you said was right on. The main thing ( and I was concerned because you didn’t mention it early on, but you did towards the end) is to never use soap to wash your cast iron. 👍🏽
McGie… I have all of my Mommy’s Cast Iron Skillets. She’s been gone 15 yrs now & when I’m No Longer Here, My Children will continue to cherish Mamaw’s cast Iron skillets…That was some Good Bacon cooking right there !!! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃Until the next one 😉💞🇺🇸
I don't use my cast iron that much but great info Good reminder of what to do thanks for sharing keep the cameras rolling from Florida. Ps. that was some fine looking bacon 🥓
Off Topic: for your Silage pile, maybe look into old damaged Shipping Containers in your area. Could be cheaper in the long term instead of replacing plywood & tarps every few years. Would be better against rain & wind. Big enough to drive your frontal loader into scoop up the Silage all the way back of the Shipping Container. Also can prevent against attracting rodents & insects/disease.
There you go again ! Cause'n me to lust after food! You are right in everything you said It's so hard to keep people to maintain cast iron correctly. My son and I both do just as you said, my girls not so much. They were raised in the same house! I wish you and yours a bountiful Thanksgiving, my friend!
Now.I'm hungry Mcgie have you seen the temperatures coming for this weekend we have some three dog nights coming I have. A tip for Mary Here in Ohio, the temperatures drop below 15. It's o k if brother and sister Snuggle to the stay warm 😊 Thanks brother for the video
Do you still like the kitchen queen better than the heco? I have a kitchen queen hearthmaster 240 and like it all but it has no grates and I like a stove with grates instead of fire brick on the bottom but I found this stove used and at a great price.
Nice Video. I never thought about cooking Pork Belly like that. I'll have to try it some Day. I'm 62 , and I have my In Law's Cast Iron Frying Pan. Planning on using it this morning. To All, have a Great & Safe Thanksgiving. #STAYSAFE #PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
It’s better to not initially season your cast iron with bacon grease or anything similar. Those greases have sodium in them. It’s best to initially season with something like 4-7 coats of grape seed oil.

Amen to that! Hate is like the rusty crust that ruins the skillet! It’s got to be purged from our lives! Thanks for the reminder!!!

That’s true! Plain lard unsalted is good I’m sure
Challenge accepted! I'll get sick of eating Bacon every day ,right ?
There's nothing cook,or baked that can't be made better with bacon.

Why is Frank not on your videos anymore.
He stopped coming over when his woman ( my mother in law) told him she didn’t like him coming over here!
