This album is full of creativity, emotion and raw musical talent, really impressive!!.
Forget Zeppelin for a while, this is an epic album!
If you grew up in the 70s you either love Led Zeppelin or you despise them. I despise them. They were on the radio 24 hrs a day.
The opening notes to Stairway (or the Eagles "Hotel California") just make my stomach turn.
@@dang2443 Hotel California makes me sick too and I was born in 93. It's so painfully benign.
@@nicknickson3650 I hate the Eagles.
@@gregizzo4191 i didn't know you were allowed to say that
@@gmcintyre Tell me about it!
This album is so awesome! I can't believe it is not more famous!
I saw Holmes and his trio play several times in Albany New York around 1967. The guitarist then and on this recording is Ted Irwin. I have no idea what became of Irwin but obviously he had some fast fingers. Holmes would go on to make a boatload of money in the commercial jingle business. At least in New York City, one radio station tried to give this album a push but I don't think it ever sold much.
You're not thinking of Rupert Holmes in the jingle business are you?
@@multicaruana no I don't think he is, I'm pretty sure Jake holmes made some pretty famous jingles for some big companies
@@ayyowhat "Be all that you can be", "Gillette, the best a man can get", I drink Dr Pepper and I'm proud", "Come see the softer side of Sears".. the list actually goes on for quite a while. He also co-wrote the Four seasons album, "Imitation Life gazette" and the harry Belfonte album "Paradise in Gazankulu" as well as Sinatra's favourite of his own records "Watertown"
@@ayyowhat He did.
67, just think if Zep would have given him credit, he would have been big. Alot of us would have checked him out and grab an album for the same reason alot of us are here on utube...now he is old and too late...great stuff here
one of most underestimate album in music history :(
It's a masterpiece.
Seemingly, Page shoplifted him more than just an infamous Dazed and Confused, but the sound and tone as well
@@conmane3341if you listen to Jake's other albums you really hear just how much page borrowed and I can't say I blame page one bit it's damn good
The first song literally melted my face...calling it epic is an understatement.
Very underrated artist! Great stuff!!
wow never heard of him but he rocks
I had an original copy of this album in beautiful condition I found in an indie used record store in the 80's (Vintage Vinyl Records in Fords, NJ, still going strong today). Sadly, I took i to my college radio station a couple of years later to potentially play THAT ONE TRACK on the air, left it in my car on a blisteringly hot day and it melted & warped to the point of being unplayable. I'm not really sure if it would be worth anything as a collector's item now or even then, but I always considered it a great loss.
Worth about a hundred dollars
Oh damn, that sucks.
I wish I found this guy 40 years ago. I can only think where his songs coul'd have gone.
I recommend you also check out the Bronx child prodigy and genius, Laura Nyro. I wish I 'discovered' her 40 years ago! You probably know many of her songs as covers by others. She was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame by Bette Midler in 2012 - see youtube.
so you mean you were influential back then?
Nice guitar. Way ahead of others of the time. And Jake - "Be all you can be in the ARMY!" The Above Ground Sound. Indeed.
???
i used to think tim buckleys guitarist could play fast runs with jazzy chords.
but this guy is even better.
WHat was Buckleys guitaritst name please?
@@marcgambell2767 Lee Underwood. Read his book about those days, it is beautiful.
Incredibile sto disco.... Non posso credere che sia rimasto sconosciuto
So remember this album and your right it went under the radar.
This album (and the ”fake” stereo-mix) and especially Ted Irwin is just mind-blowing. The second “A letter to Katherine December” is equally amazing, but very different
Very happy to find this.
You can hear early West Coast SF sound, Zombies, Byrds and Turtles influences on many of these songs from 1965-66 before this albums release in 1967. As far as DAC, The Yardbirds were playing a heavier and extended version of this on tour as well before Zepp with Page seeing Holmes perform the song in Greenwich Village NYC in August 1967 as he opened for the Yardbirds and within 2 months , the Yardbirds were performing it live in October 1967 as "I'm Confused" and the song has evolved from there with the Yardbirds version is closer to the original Jake Holmes version. Peter Grant was now managing the Yardbirds from mid-1967, so the craziness was already beginning even back then. Page should have just given credit because even though the songs are night and day apart, the basic structure is there and Page saw him perform the song live. As far as Plant stealing Holmes vocal style, Plant recorded "Our Song" in late 1966 or early 1967 and it was released in March 1967 and Holmes first album was released June 1967, so I don't buy that Plant stole his style because there are artists in the same time period with similar styles. But you're also leaving out another artist who was performing in 1966-67 at that time with the same style as Plant and Holmes and that is Terry Reid who was with the Jaywalkers who opened for the Rolling Stones in 1966 and it was Graham Nash of the Hollies that told Reid to sign his band with Columbia Records UK. Plant and Reid's style are very similar and I doubt they were influenced by Holmes.
Este é o primeiro e o melhor álbum de Jake Holmes.
i really love this guy
Only 43k views for this masterpiece !!! and if i didn't hear it at radio yesterday i'd never known this artist !
Strange it's so unknown
Let's also not forget, kids....that Dazed and Confused is not the only song that Jimmy Page ever stole. How Many More Times, Bring It On Home and Whole Lotta Love and Lemon Song just to name a few.
so how many albums did this guy sell?
@@boneeatsdog not many, which gives hmi more cred
Right man, more than 40 stolen songs, check Homer Simpson's thoughs regarding his rip-off ability: There's Jimmy Page, the greatest thief of American black music who ever walked the Earth". Kids never asked themselves why Page couldn't produce any music after the end of Zeppelin? Clapton, The Stones, Pink Floyd and the other bands could create new music 40 years after, Page and Plant could only produce some lousy solo albums with very few inspiration...
Absolute bullshop.

This is good!
This shit slaps so hard
i slapted that shit right off the table
It's sad most of the comments are just talking about led zeppelin, instead of this amazing album
I dont even know how I found this. Seems timeless.
neither do i. lol
oh, i remembered. i heard Led Zeppelin had plagiarized dazed and confused.
@@fidbob I found it today, because I googled "dazed and confused" thinking about Fuck Joe Biden. LOL
@@proejo Let's go Brandon! Let's go Page! 😎
you can tell he listened to Jackson C frank, you can hear the riff when he sings genuine imitation life.
(this album is brilliant)
I can also hear Morgen sound in here
in time order first to last goes Jackson C frank in 1965 -> jake holmes and giles Giles and Fripp in 1968 -> morgen in 1969
I will end the monolog when I say that this is what I was needing at this point in my life.....
IMHO: I've listened to both and really like and appreciate both. LZ DAC song is vaguely similar to JH DAC. But LZ song is much more complex with so many added features. Without a doubt credit should be given where credit is due. That is the honorable thing to do. I find each song to be equally captivating and unique in quality, wording and delivery and both deserve esteem.
'Added features' make this sound like a car. Let's just call it plagiarism. I'm glad Page was finally called out on this.
I think the zep ver better...but they stole it...and so many more...just greed
Holmes' lyrics are a class above
@@tommoyer4697 Without Page´s greed you would never know about Holmes.. other than Sherlock Holmes, that is 🤣 All this talk about "plagiarism" is so old and boring... in the blues world, everybody used the same old stuff recycled over and over - and no one cried Foul..
Slight correction, this album came out in 1967 not 1968
On first pressings of ZEps album JimmyPage takes full credit as the song writer
Very creative. How did some of us miss this guy?....Nice raw sound.....missing a drum?
I don't think it's missing drums, I think this is rather special as is
@@RobCabreraCh agree
The same way we've missed most of the rest of the great music - because it was never promoted. UA-cam and the internet in general are now giving these gems the exposure that they never had. Yet the radio continues to play commercial promoted crap.
A LOT OF THIS ALBUM MADE IT INTO ZEPPELIN MUSIC.
I HEAR STUFF HERE THAT IS THE FOUNDATION OF ZEPPELIN'S SOUND.

P.S. Sorry That Jimmy Page Took From You!

If you're not underground...
14:31 - Jimmy Page: "I wish I wrote that."
Robert Plant: "You will, Jimmy, you will..."
Musicians complaing about Page acting like a black muscian? Chuck Berry sound was actually invented by his piano player then of course James Brown. Most of Brown's music was written by other band members, at best Brown gave it a tiny bit of polish. He once bragged he made most of his money from advertising agencies paying him a royalty for use of "his" music.
Fuck are you talking about
@@halloweenjean speak English not manglish.
John Neal is really James Patrick James...and no John, Jimmy Page isn't playing guitar on this lp. Jake Holmes plays all the guitar 'licks' on this effort. Page stole the song, rearranged it, then signed his name to it. Page wishes he could play this well!!
+bodensick thanks for knowing this
+bodensick And they reached a out of court settlement...in 2012! I hope Jake's retirement is comfortable - Pagey owes him that. Wikipedia is the Axis - "he knows everything"
along with Ted Irwin.

And Jimmy Page may have played at the same locations and same time as the band Spirit, but Jimmy Page had never heard the song "Taurus" and even if it sounds like Stairway, that is only a coincidence. Jimmy Page actually criticized Rolf Harris for his version of Stairway - but at least he gave credit.

This guy ended up being a HUGE singer of TV commercial jingles in the 70s and 80s. Selling out?
more like making a living.
I guess anyone paying their bills is a sellout...
he didn't sell out he bought in
eyeh8nbc I was born in 1972 so I was of that prefect age to hear a ton of Jake Holmes via cheesy 1980s TV commercial jingles, even if I had no clue who he was in those days, just that I kept hearing that voice on ads from the Army (Be all that you can be), Sure deodorant (Raise your hand if you're Sure), Dr. Pepper (Be a Pepper), Legos (Zack/Jack he's a Lego Maniac) and Come see the softer side of Sears. Who'd ever thought he actually recorded some great stuff in the late '60s that bear little resemblance to those cheesy TV commercials he did.
lol,,,, well, yes he did,,, but at least it wasnt like, i dont know,,,, he made this great perfect album with his name on it,,, thats good enough,,, he or the people behind this album probably got hired as ghostwriters and players for the ZEP

Great recording. I think that maybe Mr Charles Manson must have heard this. Listen to ‘Lie’ or ‘The Love and terror cult’.
1:40 I can hear a bit of the stairway to heaven solo (live version)
Worth checking Phil Ochs, Zeppelin never ripped off his stuff, too political. Page is a conservative like Jagger.
Damned it Jimi and Rob copycats! Jake must be paid his dues
Ah yes the REAL version of Dazed and confused
Goddamn. Plant even copied the way he sang.

The Zep rip off factor from this guy is huge.
How come Janis Joplin famous but not this guy? Hmm 🤔

If he is going to rip someone off, he should at least change the name of the song. The acoustic version on here is the best. I wont tell the name of the song, for the record is so high, that maybe no one will find the ripoff.

This guy is great, but I still prefer Led Zeppelin.
Not sorry to say this, but Ive lost some respect for Led Zepplin
good guitarist. great singer...but a little dodgy on their originality!

In case you did not know ,lead guitar on all tracks on this album are played by a James Patrick James , better known as Jimmy Page (led zeppelin) ! note track 6 is Dazed And Confused (writen by Jimmy Page)
Barbra Burton uhhh, no. Also Jimmy page eventually gave Jake Holmes credit for Dazed and Confused.
Barbra Burton No, Jimmy Page didn't play in this album. They never played together. Page stole this music: @2010
Barbra Burton How can you get something so completely wrong and try to pass it off as fact? Tim Irwin was the guitarist on this album, along with Jake himself. Jimmy Page stole this song after seeing Jake Holmes play it at a club in Greenwich Village. He never gave him credit for writing the song until Jake took him to court about 40 years later.
Barbra Burton Hi Barbra, I love how you don't let facts get in the way of a good story. You are truly an amazing piece of misinformation and I find that extremely refreshing. Thank you for putting a smile on my face. ;-)
Funny! Made me laugh. The people above me are too dense to get it I guess.
too bad zeppelin is a turd this is incredible
+Emili York Don't blame Plant, Jones or Bonham! Pagey stole the song when Jake opened up for the Yardbirds two year before Zeppelin has born. I sure Bonham never knew. I imagine Plant and Jones only knew after Pagey got sued in 2010.
+Larry Beckham well i find it hard to believe that the band remained ignorant to the origins of a song they all played together, also jake was in their general scene so they'd probably heard of him, but maybe they were all super naive.
+Larry Beckham Don't forget it was also on the Yardbirds-Live at the Anderson Theatre LP
I agree !!
