"people count on people, who can only count to one". "people worship crosses, fingers crossed behind their back". "old friends get together, but it's solitaire they play".. some of the best word play I've ever come across.. he was a good lyricist, wish he did more songs..
What a treat! I discovered Jake as a teen and was blown away by the poetry, imagery, and the complex musical influences. Never seen him in performance. Cool. Best known for writing Dazed and Confused. Well, actually, best known for the catchy advertising jingles he wrote. Remember "I'm a Pepper, He's a Pepper..wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?" and "Join the People who joined the Army"? Yup, that's Jake Holmes paying the rent.
I picked up a used demo 8track tape in1971. .It had Jake Holmes Genuine imitation life and leaves never break. Also had 2 songs each by, Them, Kim Fowley, Chocolate Watchband and Pink Floyd. Intense and deep, psychedelic stuff. Played it till the tape wore out. I have found all the songs from that 8track on the internet over the years . . great music great memories. Thanks Jake!
Just discovered him today, what a creative, innovative, multifacted True Artist . I love the beat, poet, folksinger exspression . He should be more well known .
I bought Jake Holmes self-titled album the same day I bought Jesse Winchester's self-titled 1st album. Have always been amazed by the man's mind and beautiful voice and incredible chord changes.
He was good! Interesting and intelligent lyrics! He was Intense! And I like his clear singing voice. Thanks to whoever posted this and to UA-cam. I finally get to see Jake Holmes live from so long ago.
saw him on my first real nyc trip-we scouted out a place that afternoon and went back at night to the bitter end -saw the uncalled for three, comedy group and serendipity singers were the headliners.

@@xblood1978 He also wrote Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused. He opened for the Yardbirds when Jimi Page was the guitarist and this is where JP ripped of the riff and the opening lyric. He was not credited by Zeppelin until years afterwards. Here is Jake's original version from 1967--- ua-cam.com/video/pTsvs-pAGDc/v-deo.html
Wow. He seems like someone who should have been more successful, somehow: maybe Polydor was a bit of a backwater major label for a specialized singer songwriter like this: how would it have turned out if he'd been on (say) Warners or Columbia, teamed with a sympatico producer ... there are elements of Tims Hardin and Buckley here, that ought to have led to a higher standing ... I have a couple of his LPs, must break them out again for a listen.
He had lots of success with his commercial jingles: I'm a Pepper; Raise your Hand if you're Sure; Be All You Can Be in the Army. I suppose that he made millions on them. He also sang all of those in commercials (although most of the commercials using "I'm a Pepper" had David Naughton singing). He's a voice that almost everybody has heard, without knowing his name.
Sorry, but Led Zeppelin would have been huge regardless of a handful of descending notes that Jimmy Page took and made into something more epic and memorable. I'm so tired of everyone accusing Jimmy Page of being nothing more than a thief. Such a joke. For every riff Jimmy Page borrowed, he came up with 20 riffs of his own. What many don't seem to get is that part of being a great Artist is the ability to market a product - making your art accessible to the masses. Jimmy Page was a master at that... along with being a master Guitarist, Writer and Producer. So, you can have your "amazing artists who haven't had much recognition". I'll take the "amazing artists who got all the recognition they deserved because they had that extra something that separated them from all the 'good' artists". Page is/was one such artist.

This is really good. I only clicked on his name because of Dazed & Confused but he obviously is more than just one song. I hope he got compensated by Jimmy Page but I doubt it.
Yes! His two first albums is strong stuff. He's done a lot of collaborations also. I'm not much into Frank Sinatra, but check out his album Watertown from '69. Bob Guido and Jake Holmes are behind that - and it's good! Check ratings on allmusic.com - interesting enough the albums before and after that gets MOR-ratings :-) The same goes for the Four Seasons "The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" from '69. Also really good. Especially Jakes title track.

Art and poetry at their best.
I remember his song with the lyric, "Father Murphy's late for mass/I hope he won't be missed./ But he and Mrs. Murphy are still at the analyst."
Fantastic video! Jake was so underrated and to hear what I think is an unreleased song is so good. Thanks so much, a real treat.
Nice - played the Tower albums when new on the radio; glad to have done so!
He was very successful as he wrote tv and radio commercials
Yes, Jingle Jake. "Raise your hand if you're sure!" "Gillette, the best a man can get!" "Help yourself to Stouffer's pizza." And many more.
This is some heavy stuff! Fans of Black Sabbath would dig Jake Holmes because this is Metal's roots!
Damn Right....this is the guy Tony ripped Sleeping Village off right?

Un artista músico, de un carácter muy personal, enigmático, hoy es vigente folclore norteamericano muy profundo.
One fav
Hernoso, gracias
There have been tons of amazing artists who haven't had much recognition. That's how zeppelin was able to steal so much music.
That's right. Success has as much to do with connections and with playing the game, as with talent.

This is amazing! Thank you. :)
Not at the moment, but trying to sweep the world for more. Stay tuned :-)
Nice!
very good much more than 4 S
This is great. Anymore live Holmes?
Can someone upload a video with only the Sleeping Woman part?

He's magic! And still active byt the way.
Go get The Above Ground Sound via the link. Don't buy the illegitimate Radioactive-release.
He has that same power Phil Ochs had as a rebel songwriter
that might be stretching it a bit
This could have inspired the bassline on Walk on the Wild Side.
This guy is a businessman/folkie.
What happened here? This guy is incredible, but the only reason I found out about him is because he wrote a Led Zeppelin song...
obviously page didn't copy the music, but the lyrics.
Its got the same note walkdown that is the song.
this is master ...epic
