All of Flyleaf's songs are written from Biblical inspiration, and the salvation of Christ that God gives to us. Lacey uses bits and pieces from the Bible in nearly all of her songs because MOST of her songs are her little personal serenades from her towards God. She shares these moments of pure love and vulnerability with her listeners. A lot of people don't even make the connection between all the bands lyrics and the Bible but if you knew Laceys' background you'd understand the songs even better, and you'd be able to go deeper if you're familiar with the Bible cuz its really cool to hear how she intertwines scripture into her lyrics. I love her genuine cry out to God in her expression of LOVE for Him and gratitude for salvation and even her sharing of her struggle from darkness into His saving Light. This is pretty much the main reason why people love these songs but no idea WHY they connect with them so deeply. I believe its simply because they're songs that praise God, and I know when God is being praised (regardless IF you realize it or not) it draws His presence to where you are and you become emotional and sensitive to the words. Then you start singing along and tears are coming and little do you know you've just drawn the Presence of God to you as your soul sung along with Lacey. God is no respecter of persons and its amazing how he uses anyone to draw people to Him in sweet love and even needed tears.
I understand this song is religious, but it gets to me on a different level. I first heard this a year ago, a few days after I heard it my boyfriend proposed to me. We were in a stressful situation and I didn't want him saying it just because of the stress, it was so random I almost didn't believe he was serious, so I smiled and told him to ask me again once everything calmed down, that it had to be cliche and a fairy tale setting (jokingly). He died two days later. Maybe if I told him yes, he'd still be here. I wish he knew how bad I wanted to say yes. I really need him now, if only to hear his voice.
GodOfThe Wolves He wouldn't be happy with what I've done; I'm not even happy about it. It's a comforting thought though.... Hass PerieratSoul I'm sorry :c all loss hurts, no one persons is more/less than someone else's
I had a similar thing happen. But it wasn't with a lover. I was young, but I still remember it vividly. I believe I was.. eleven. And I had just started middle school. Sixth grade. My family was in a bad way, and we were about to lose our house. My parents had past problems with drugs, though they were recovering. But we were still on the poverty line. My dad was around a lot more than my mom. On a Wednesday, out of the blue, he sold the title to his car so we could get some money and he let me and my little brother do whatever we wanted. Before we got my brother, he stopped and bought some sleeping medicine because he had problems with it. He took too many pills, and he was dead the next morning. The anniversary of his death is this Friday. He always told me how much he loved me, and how important I was to him. I never believed it, and I still don't see what's so loveable about me. Though I wish I had taken more thought to him. The last thing he ever said to me was an 'I love you' before bed. I'm sorry about your loss. And just remember you can always find love again. Don't give up just because of one tragedy. I've been through hell in only a few years of living, but there's always someone that'll take it all away and make you feel special. I promise, if you keep looking, you'll find them.
I can't begin to imagine the pain. I am amazed you can get up each day - Something like this would have put me in a mental hospital, never recovering from the fetal position.. I'm in awe of your strength.
***For anyone who was curious at how it could be taken as a religious story, here are some explanation's for the lyrics: : ) Hope it helps~! "Circle encircles the Earth, chance and choice break his heart.": _as God looks down upon us, sees us as we turn our back on Him. And it is through this choice and chance of sin that we deny the very love God has for us, and this pains His heart deeply. "His innocent arm moves to save me, and I am spared.": _it is through His pure forgiveness and unending love for us that saves us from an eternal suffering. "His beautiful arm is bloody and cut of. His heart ripped out to show me He loved me": _He wants us to willingly love Him; He will not force us to. And even still, man denies His arm, reaching out to save us (His forgiveness). Christ poured out and showed to us the extent of His love for us when He suffered and died on the cross, so that even though we sin, we may still be saved. "I left His arms empty and tied outstretched for me until He died.": _His love for me; that he died, tied and bound to a cross; I did not accept, and so I left the arms of forgiveness that He offered to me, and left Him hanging there. "No man shows greater love than when a man lays down his life for his beloved.": _this is straight out of the Bible. John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." Friends meaning "those whom one loves." And this is exactly what Christ did at the cross. "And here I am alive, and I don't have the right." _who am I to have the right to ask forgiveness and be saved, when I gave it up when I sinned? (You give up rights by your decisions and actions, it is the same when you sin. Even if you don't acknowledge it, that pain in your heart is proof of your suffering that sin and a separation of love has left within you.) "But He gave me the right; costing Him His life; new mercies in the morning." _it was by His death on the cross that gave that opened the way by which I can be saved (freeing all the souls in purgatory and creating a new pathway to Heaven). He has shown mercy to us all, and through His resurrection, He let it be known that he was God, and so brought me to eternal life. The rest of the lyrics explain themselves when looked at in this way. But if you would still like any clarifications, I'd be glad to give some. : ) Hope this helps~!

You can interpret them in both ways like so.. the religious way is that god/jesus gave up everything and we dont deserve it. The non- religious view point is that it might have been a loved one or in a different perspective like a warrior or soldier that saved her and it cost it that other persons life. There you go now you know how! :)

The reason why is because Lacey is singing from a place many have never in their lives. Her songs come from the greatest form of human expression of all. This song cries out from her soul. Lacey Sturm was literally about to end her life by hanging, but God's spirit came and filled her with peace and comfort. I myself have felt God move in my own body, causing fear to leave and make me be able to do things my normal mind is incapable of. God gives me the strength to be the best person I can, and enables me to work towards helping the world be changed for the better. He can be there for you if you seek after Him. Read the gospels and the book of Acts, then all the way through the Bible if you can. God has a plan for your life, and he loves you more than anyone else could ever love. God bless.
+Tony Walker I think it's changed for the better the music I listen to now is a lot of indie, R&B, trap, house, chill step, edm, jazz my music genres are very mixed I try to listen to as many as I can really, I even listen to the occasional classical and opera now and then but this type of music doesn't really interest me as it did when I was much younger
+UnicornCookieBubbles that,s good have you tried chior and if so have you heard of scala and the kolacny brother they make covers of songs and originals they are a great chior if you have the timevcheck them out
This vid was uploaded 11 years ago. I till this day come and listen to this beautiful song. I hope the person who uploaded this is doing great in life and to whoever is reading this life gets better just be patient.
Greater love has no man than this ; that a man lay down his life for his friends,What an amazing scripture and what an amazing band is Flyleaf ***** John 15:13
She adresses exactly the issue of not believing in him. Not believing that HE is the son of God, and God himself. I don't think there is a double meaning behind it. But you're right, either way, a great song ;)
I swear, on every single Flyleaf video there is there's always an argument in the comments about whether the song is related to Christianity or not. Guys music is interpreted differently by everyone so a song will mean something different to everyone. Just because an artist may have written a song about God or Jesus does not mean that that's the only way it can be interpreted. I myself am not Christian, but I still love Flyleaf
in all honesty the song is what you make it. Flyleaf is a religious band but i'm sure if the message to you isn't religious but still something about helping others or staying true then they are happy.
This song has alot of truth in many ways. It means alot for different people. That's why I like flyleaf, they can make good music and they can have emotional meaning behind it.
I'm an atheist too, and I think these are fantastic songs. Frankly, the fact that Flyleaf and I disagree on the existence of the subject matter doesn't change the passion and love that Lacey sings with. I wish more bands had that kind of drive.
i'd like to say that, in my opinion, from my stand point, the God i believe in doesn't differ His love for anyone, no matter what the situation is. we all have the right to think and hold our own opinions, and although some may think their opinion is "right", or another's is "wrong", exercising that right is of little meaning to me. does it truly matter if our opinions are right? only to ourselves, and personally, i'm glad that many different people are enjoying this song. my God welcomes all.
@TrenchxTasticMvs Hey thanks for your comment man. I'm a Christian who looks at all sorts of messages in music even if they don't mesh with my worldview. I love to see all sorts of bands express what they're passionate about, and it just overall helps me better understand different beliefs.
that's one unfortunate guy. The words are so powerful. I do get the religious undertone in all of it, but I'm not certain it's proprietorially religious. The words are ambiguous, so I think it can also be up to interpretation. But even so, it's very beautifully and powerfully worded. As a non religious person, I can still appreciate that much.
+Elijah Finamore it's both, she is talking about Jesus, but she is also is talking about how before she was an Athiest before she became Christian. if you read her book she talks about how she was saved and before why she was an Athiest. she was angry at God when she was 10 because her step uncle killed her 3 year old cousin and she stayed that way until she was 16 when her grandma forced her to go to church. She wanted to kill herself but her pastor reached out And spoke to her and she life to Christ that day.
No. Lacey specifically said she was Christian, one, and two, I have listened to countless songs where they clearly state God saving them. Listen to Swept Away, and Okay. Okay clearly states, "God will hear and save, God will hear and save us!"
i literally just woke up from my dream and the last i saw / remember was lacey saying circles encircles the earth then then young garra destroying the earth with a planetary sand coffin and then it showed his hand closing relesing the justu upon the earth .
You can interpret it in whatever way you want. I just wanted to point out that I'm pretty sure that Flyleaf is looking at it from the Christians perspective, and they probably didn't think about another perspective just to make it enjoyable for atheists or other religions. Of course I cannot be certain about this, you'd have to ask them yourself :P Cheers
I'd say the song could mean someone dying for their lover or about Jesus dying for our sins. So non-religious people can give their own meaning to it and Christians can too. :)
i don't care if they are a christian band or not they're awesome so does it really matter? really truly does it matter? i don''t think so... but you know everybody has their own opinions so everybody is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow I haven't listened to this band in so many years my music taste has changed drastically but I'm gonna admit this song is still good 😂😂😂
do you think it,s changed for better or worst can you name a few genres you listen to now
+Tony Walker I think it's changed for the better the music I listen to now is a lot of indie, R&B, trap, house, chill step, edm, jazz my music genres are very mixed I try to listen to as many as I can really, I even listen to the occasional classical and opera now and then but this type of music doesn't really interest me as it did when I was much younger
+UnicornCookieBubbles that,s good have you tried chior and if so have you heard of scala and the kolacny brother they make covers of songs and originals they are a great chior if you have the timevcheck them out
+Tony Walker I'll give them a listen!
+UnicornCookieBubbles ok tell me what you think of them ?
This vid was uploaded 11 years ago. I till this day come and listen to this beautiful song. I hope the person who uploaded this is doing great in life and to whoever is reading this life gets better just be patient.
Greater love has no man than this ; that a man lay down his life for his friends,What an amazing scripture and what an amazing band is Flyleaf *****
John 15:13
Oh my apples i love it
lmao oh my apples
Where did I hear that before?
apples lmaoooo
I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THIS COMMENT! I WAS LIKE 12 WHEN I MADE THIS
I'm 18 now
The way Lacy sings this song with such emotion and power. Then at the end I can hear her voice trembling like she's crying. So powerful!
Favorite song by Flyleaf ever. I been listening to them since I was so little. Now coming back to this song..Ahhh it is so deep. love it♥
Sam Says Favourite*
@honeylion07 No, dear.. It's Favorite. LOL
She adresses exactly the issue of not believing in him.
Not believing that HE is the son of God, and God himself.
I don't think there is a double meaning behind it.
But you're right, either way, a great song ;)
Exactly shows the pain of not believing and not realizing what he went through and why he went through it
I swear, on every single Flyleaf video there is there's always an argument in the comments about whether the song is related to Christianity or not. Guys music is interpreted differently by everyone so a song will mean something different to everyone. Just because an artist may have written a song about God or Jesus does not mean that that's the only way it can be interpreted. I myself am not Christian, but I still love Flyleaf
This is a perfect song for resurection day such a beautiful song
I’ll never forget how much I was in love with this song 5 years ago
Love this song...
I CAN'T stop hitting replay.
in all honesty the song is what you make it. Flyleaf is a religious band but i'm sure if the message to you isn't religious but still something about helping others or staying true then they are happy.
So powerful.
its so sad i fell like crying
I am still an agnostic theist, but this song is still very powerful to me. Makes me want to question my beliefs.
-No man shows greater love, Than when a man lays down his life, for his beloved
This song is so powerful. I love Lacey's use of emotion. It's a sad and angry tone. Words cannot describe.
This song has alot of truth in many ways. It means alot for different people. That's why I like flyleaf, they can make good music and they can have emotional meaning behind it.
Oh man....im speechless.....first time I heard this song....its beautiful
this just gave me major goosebumps and i almost cried. but i love it
It's strange how many people say that they would sacrifice themselves to save their beloved, when in reality they would become frozen by death.
:D i luv this song and the video good job!
I'm an atheist too, and I think these are fantastic songs. Frankly, the fact that Flyleaf and I disagree on the existence of the subject matter doesn't change the passion and love that Lacey sings with. I wish more bands had that kind of drive.
This is now my favourite song of flyleaf!
this is my fav song!
Flyleaf is the best band ever. Hands down. (: I went to their concert and it was the most amazing experience.
Thank you Jesus for laying down your life for me.
Damn this song was my jam back then
beautiful lyrics
i'd like to say that, in my opinion, from my stand point, the God i believe in doesn't differ His love for anyone, no matter what the situation is. we all have the right to think and hold our own opinions, and although some may think their opinion is "right", or another's is "wrong", exercising that right is of little meaning to me. does it truly matter if our opinions are right? only to ourselves, and personally, i'm glad that many different people are enjoying this song. my God welcomes all.
Memento Mori is so underrated
nothing breaks u more when a girl doesnt believe u n then only when its to late do they realize it that u did love them
Isn’t it amazing how you can interpret this beautiful piece of art.
Well, this reminds me of deathly hallows. Like just freaking everyone in the books/movies.
@TrenchxTasticMvs
Hey thanks for your comment man. I'm a Christian who looks at all sorts of messages in music even if they don't mesh with my worldview. I love to see all sorts of bands express what they're passionate about, and it just overall helps me better understand different beliefs.
This song made me cry because it reminds me what Jesus has done for us
my second favourite song on Memento Mori (:
that's one unfortunate guy. The words are so powerful. I do get the religious undertone in all of it, but I'm not certain it's proprietorially religious. The words are ambiguous, so I think it can also be up to interpretation. But even so, it's very beautifully and powerfully worded. As a non religious person, I can still appreciate that much.
I can see how it MIGHT be non religious possibly, but as a Christian it really sounds like she's talking about Jesus.
She wanted to kill herself but her pastor reached out And spoke to her and she life to Christ that day.
very good response. most people, including myself, don't get the facts before making comments. the song is for sure about Jesus!!.
+My Animation that's actually an amazing story.
lightningshock12 u will burn in hell
No. Lacey specifically said she was Christian, one, and two, I have listened to countless songs where they clearly state God saving them. Listen to Swept Away, and Okay. Okay clearly states, "God will hear and save, God will hear and save us!"
i used to think no one understood me and no love me but all that change when i was intorduce to god.
Awesome! This song make me think, how He love us... =(
the end is pure AMAZING!
@christianpunkchic777 They came to Bushnell, IL in 2008, I saw them...they were at Cornerstone festival. About 2 hours from Chi-town.
No matter how many years have passed... this song always makes me cry. God is great
No dislikes. I LOVE this :)
i literally just woke up from my dream and the last i saw / remember was lacey saying circles encircles the earth then then young garra destroying the earth with a planetary sand coffin and then it showed his hand closing relesing the justu upon the earth .
I love this song so much :3
You can interpret it in whatever way you want.
I just wanted to point out that I'm pretty sure that Flyleaf is looking at it from the Christians perspective, and they probably didn't think about another perspective just to make it enjoyable for atheists or other religions.
Of course I cannot be certain about this, you'd have to ask them yourself :P
Cheers
I'd say the song could mean someone dying for their lover or about Jesus dying for our sins. So non-religious people can give their own meaning to it and Christians can too. :)
I absolutely love this song
i don't care if they are a christian band or not they're awesome so does it really matter? really truly does it matter? i don''t think so... but you know everybody has their own opinions so everybody is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
