😂 wow I would like to see that . Very good resource . And the nice smooth edges to lean on while working them . I bought a "fire ring" to make a raised bed and I love the round top edge to lean my hand on while I'm working it . 👍🛀
Thank you, James. Thank you for showing me the potential. I've been addicted to your channel for the last 2 weeks. I bought a house on .44 acres 6 months ago. I moved from a condo in downtown Austin to the outskirts of Austin. I've been trying to move for 2 years, but I was infected with covid in March 2020, and then suffered with long haul; basically in bed 18 hours a day for about 9 months going into 2021. I bought this house surrounded by nature to continue healing. But the ground has issues. Hard clay. Old filled-in swimming pool in the middle of the yard. In-ground hot tub filled with gravel. 40-year-old sidewalks all around the pool. Totally neglected by the previous owners. Insufficient fencing for the pack of deer that come through daily and live behind my property. However, clover does grow in my ground. And I am surrounded by trees. I'm on a drainage ditch, so lots of the water and nutrients from surrounding properties drain towards me. It's all manageable. Lots of potential. I had a big vision when I started working on this in February. I wanted to create a medicinal herb garden based on sacred geometry. Figured it would take 2 years. After the last month of working it I started thinking, "Maybe this is going to take me more like 10 years!" However, now my vision is changing. You are helping me to see the proper steps, and that it doesn't have to take 10 years. Your series on the 6 phases of a food forrest has inspired me. That's the direction I am going now. The 7 layers concept is new to me. I'll start studying. Thank you for your amazing videos and long term commitment to growing and to keeping us informed. James, you really are a treasure. I love listening to you talk about your principles of gardening. I love the tours of your food forrest. I also got a kick when you said in this video, "For me that sun rises in the east, and sets in the west." What a coincidence! Me too! Ha! I love the work you are doing. You are so humble, and yet so knowledgeable. And I think you are occasionally funny in a way that a good old friend can be funny and make you laugh without realizing it. Especially when Tuck is involved. I wish you and Tuck all the best in the garden and in life.
What a great comment! I was blessed to find a house to rent after 7 years of wandering and homelessness and other crazy nonsense among annoying and worthless information. Local food and food forests can be a game changer for so many of us! We're all in need of this! Share with the stranger and wanderer and foreigner as best you can. If you have even a tiny lot of land, just share!
Fantastic tips, James! I especially like the idea of never leaving bare space, to replace harvested plants with new ones that you have ready to go. Thanks!
Thanks Scott! I learned that one from my little pup Tuck, he scolded me when I used to harvest something and not have something to replace it with in the past, he's the boss and he likes his veggies fresh!
@@jamesprigioni I just made some beds from cypress, its naturally rot resistant, no chemicals, only time will tell how long it actually last and cedar is also good, rough sawn to save money, big box store should have cedar, for cypress you might need to go to a saw mill, thats where I got mine in Florida. Peas
This was one of my favorite tips as well. I wind up procrastinating, always saying I'm going to plant something else. Which is real bad when the season changes!
@@jamesprigioni Every time I see Tuck I want to fence in my garden so I can let mine out there with me too! As is right now, one squirrel shows up and its missing posters all over town for two dogs haha

Garret. Pick a few things you like to eat. Some may just need a small space. A planter, small raised bed, maybe a few rocks in a circle or square enough for the plant.

Wow! So much excellent information James! Going to have to watch several times just to take it all in! Thanks for making videos that are such a Valuable resource for others; especially for novice “green beans” like me👩🌾... love to watch Tuck inspect your work- we should all be blessed with such spirited supervisors!😂
Thanks James for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Just wondering if you have a compost pile and if so, how you work with it. Thanks Tuck.
Good morning James! Fantastic gardening tips. Tuck noshing on the bean is adorable, give him a ear scratch for me. I am receiving 10 bags of compost today as I'm starting my garden next weekend when a batch of fresh seeds arrive. I've been gardening 4 years and each year I learn more. So glad I found your channel! We chose a cinder block raised bed concept as a starting point. 3 separate beds with 3 feet of walking space in between each raised bed about the same size as your raised bed. An archway connecting 2 of the beds to allow for climbers like cukes and tomatoes. We dug 1/2 foot deep to anchor the first block then stacked a 2nd cinder on top. Fill the top cinder with soil to plant pest control florals like chamomile, and marigolds every 3rd block. I'm using a shower chair bench when I'm out there for weeding (I'm hoping fresh compost will cut down on the weeds this year). We live in a tropical area so our growing season is about to begin. We hung shade cloth last year for the hot months which prolonged my herbs, arugula and kale by 2 months. Thanks!
Before I started watching your videos I was over dosing on gardening info. That was causing a spin out and I stopped enjoying the process. I was seriously stressing trying to figure out if I'm remembering everything. lol Then I started watching your process and the joy you share with us all and it helped me switch gears back to enjoying the process of gardening again. All that to say Thanks for the enthusiastic attitude. It's good for the soul.
Once again thanks for the great info! Needed to know which initials on pallets were the right ones as I'm using for a 3 bin compost system I'm building. Tuck you're a good boy keeping him company in the garden!
I just moved 6 months ago and had to start over again with my garden. Luke you I didn't want to use treated wood when I first started it around 6 years ago. So my beds were rotting out and were ready to be redone. Luckily the new owner let me come and get the dirt/soil which I had kept on amending through the years with compost. I had to make more beds and the area I found which had the most sun also had a slope. So I had to try and level the area before I put the new beds down. I couldn't even work the soil until mid April because the ground was still frozen. We are in zone 4a. Then it a couple of weeks to transport the soil (I only moved 1 mile away.) So I have made several of those mistakes trading off some things for others.
Thanks a. Marie! Me and Tuck have a blast making them, and we appreciate the kind words. We are enjoying the fall, and this stretch of warm days that we are getting. Me and Tuck hope you are enjoying your fall as well. 🐕😁
James, you helped me so much during my furlough! I built my first 4 raised bed gardens, got my hot tumbler and started a great compost for next spring. I have a much shorter growing season than you but after watching your videos, I know what and when to plant them for max return. Thank you and Tuck for the informative videos and insights
My husband and I love seeing Tuck. He is a Norwich right? We lost our friend, Nacho, a Norfolk Terrier, about 2 years ago and miss him dearly. He was our best buddie and just loved hanging with us just like Tuck.
Tuck your awesome and so very healthy! Great video built 4 raised beds and have started filling them with dirt. Prayers that it will produce. My husband was the green thumb, died of Cancer 5 years ago. Me I am learning what he had a natural ability to do.
My brother from anotha Jersey Mutha! Big thanks to handsome Tuck and yourself for your expressed passion for everything living and green! Wish we had gardened together when I used to live in the 908. May your bounty be ever abundant and your passion never quenched!
I felt really encouraged until you got to the treated lumber issue! My husband and I are getting on up in age. Me 60, him 68. He built our raised beds out of treated lumber several years ago so they would last longer. I’m very cautious about chemicals but this one never occurred to me. He doesn’t care, but me...😩!
Oh well live and learn , maybe you can make another one from non treated wood or metal or one person commented that their uncle used bath tubs . I like that , perfect size shape drainage , and not sharp edges to lean on while working it 👍😁🥦🥕🌱
Thanks Tuck...and James. Really enjoy your no-bullshit vids but that still have a heart. We, wife and I, have the luxury of soon (hopefully) moving to a bigger site (12 hectare mixed forest, steep and flat) and thanks to you guys I can hopefully plan well enough to avoid most problems.
We've got low raised beds, too, and I have a low home-made stool like a milking stool that I use to help with the convenience angle. Get tired of kneeling at times. Good tips and you can give Tuck a "good boy" from me.
I can attest to the "less is more" idea. I want so many tomatoes, and I followed so many guides. But I made the mistake of planting too close even with single pruning. Its not like it didnt work, but the following year I spaced them further apart and had far better results, particularly in reducing blight here in wisconsin. I spent way less time stressing about and tending to diseases.
I'm putting in raised beds this year for the first time. I've grown in ground and in containers for several years. This vlog came at just the right time. My husband and I have been preparing the wood for the beds this last week ( who knew we'd have 7 days of 75 + degree weather in Northern Indiana in November). Fortunately I saw this vlog and it reminded me to put hardware cloth on the bottoms. Lots of hungry moles around. Again thanks for the very helpful vlog and give Tuck a hug from us!
I once built a makeshift garden in a kiddie pool by making my compost into it and we harvested enough beans to eat and canned some for later . Love your channel
I'm really excited that I just found your channel last week! I love your enthusiasm and how knowledgeable you are and truly appreciate you researching before you educate us! God bless and keep up the good work I'll continue looking forward to your videos!!!
Good stuff, James, thanks for the vid. Love to watch Tuck, but he sure makes me miss my old buddy Sancho who passed a few years ago. Can't beat a Yorkie for great companionship.
I haven't heard the term square foot gardening for decades. There used to be a wonderful show on the subject on PBS. Glad to see that someone is still using that method.
Been watching since the first 1000 subs. Going on year 3 of my food forest. More than 30 fruit trees planted on my property. I am 2-3 days away from finishing my geothermal greenhouse. I have some vids I'm trying to upload soon to show some of our progress if you would like to see. I can't thank you enough James.
Dear veggie dog.... thanks for giving me some warmth to my soul .... to you dear human of the veggie dog... thanks for your tips... greetings from Sparta ... southern Greece ...
For my raised beds I used a pick to dig a trench to even out the high and low spots. I left an inch or so buried along the sides to prevent soil seepage.
Good good info ! Tuck is such a cool little dude . I love seeing him joining in with you snacking on veggies . Your a very good dog dad James 😉. Love you both , Sincerely 🙏 💚🍅💜🌱💙🥕
My wife and I have a Yorkie -- he hangs out with us in the garden too. Thanks for the great content. We plan on doing a hinged hoop house like yours. We are in 8a so probably only 1 ply.
Thank you for your tips. Very instructive. I would like to add that you can use treated wood on a raised bed by putting like a pool liner between the wood and the soil. I have 4 self watering raised bed that work wonders. All the best and stay safe.
But isn’t the liner maybe hazardous? And when it rots, won’t it become a mess? I thought about this and even thought to get a pond liner but then i dont know if I want to do that either. I chose pots so I could move them but the plants don’t grow near as well in the pots.
These are great tips. I live in Italy and, in the north, we are in a new restricted lockdown. This year my little garden has kept me sane. Especially being able to watch such helpful videos. I would say, that for most people, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west with the south being the predominant light exposure. 😁❤️ Next spring I am going to start my first raised bed and your advice is so helpful. Plus if I could get my dog to eat all the vegetables that Tuk does, I would be so happy. Love your enthusiasm. Thank you from a newbie gardener.
Little Tuck is adorable when he eats the veggies! I'm enjoying all your videos here in Italy during this long lockdown! When it will stop raining I'll be in the garden! Thanks Scott!

Fortunately I saw this vlog and it reminded me to put hardware cloth on the bottoms. Lots of hungry moles around. Again thanks for the very helpful vlog and give Tuck a hug from us!
I love the info, Tuck makes me happy and the dynamic intro is soooo nice! 💚🏡💚🏡
Love your channel! How about planting a raised bed near a brick wall for heat transfer in winter?
Good idea as long as it’s south facing
Gotta love this guy's energy!
Love watching your channel for gardening tips, and especially watching Tuck eating his veggies ☺️
I appreciate how James is willing to share when he makes a stupid mistake. Makes me feel better about mine.
Tuck is the man...much love Mr James on your hard work
I haven't heard the term square foot gardening for decades.
Love the doggie!
Hi tuck. Your gardening tips are a blessing to me
thank you! Love the Tuckster!
My wife and I have a Yorkie -- he hangs out with us in the garden too. Thanks for the great content. We plan on doing a hinged hoop house like yours. We are in 8a so probably only 1 ply.
That little doggy is adorable!
I always enjoy your energy brother and your videos. Thanks for all the great content.
@@joyceobeys6818 The liners I use last between 15 to 20 years. We are on our 3rd year and all is great.
Our animals our our kids. Have fun growing thanks
Love seeing Tuck enjoy the garden! He is too cute. Thanks for sharing him and your garden with us!
I love watching your videos they are so helpful and you are always so positive! And Tuck deserves all the pats he's such a good boy!
Little Tuck is adorable when he eats the veggies! I'm enjoying all your videos here in Italy during this long lockdown! When it will stop raining I'll be in the garden! Thanks Scott!
Who’s a goooooood boy? Tuck eating Dragon Tongue beans is so cute. Great video with lots of great information to digest.
Tuck is so awesome! You two are the best YTers I've found since the COVID fiasco, thanks so much!!!!!!! ❤❤❤ from WI ❤❤❤
You cover everything & love the way you school! I refer back many times & when inquiring about anything I check your channel 1st. & oh that Tuck , I need a pal like that ! 😊
I watched your video and laughed at how cute it was you read the comments to Tuck!! My dad used to tell our dog that he is a “dood boy” instead of “good boy” and pet him, and I hope Tuck knows he also is a very dood boy and I’m giving him my pets from here 🤗🤗
I love how you caressed those little babies out with plastic plant name tags - brilliant. I love your channel and all the advice you proffer, and Tuck is my favorite part. TUCK! You’re the best!
😁🐕❤️
Hi James. My first year trying my hand at gardening; raised bed on legs 2’x4’ self watering cedar. You and Tuck are an inspiration and love your videos. Thank you for all your talent and knowledge. Tuck keep on garden snacking and take care of each other. Michele/OH
James this is another great video. I definitely need to work on improving my gardening. I want to extend my season. If you can do it in Jersey, I have no excuse being a few states south of you. I'm excited to apply these tips. Bug hugs&kisses for Tuck!! He's such a cutie!
It really makes me happy that you let Tuck graze in the garden. My dog loved the plant based food I made her (sadly I don't have a garden anymore).
