Wish there were more men about like you James! Hard to find these days, so many men useless with their hands and too busy on computers and phones! I'm lucky, my late father, my brother in law and now my nephew all clever with their hands and I have learned from them just like they learn from me when it comes to the gardening bit. Always something to learn from you too! Thanks for these inspiring videos and hugs to Tuck!
Right angle clamps. Heck yes, I need a set of those. I needed a set of those decades ago. I have a feeling my life is about to get a little easier. I see raised beds in my future....
Agree with previous comments, adding the basket will help prevent gophers from destroying your plants. I lost many plants this season due to the gophers. Would love to see you build a taller raised bed for us elderly gardeners. Love you Tuck, you are so cute. Thanks James for all your videos!
I've made a small version of this. Had a box frame my washer was propped up I didn't need. I had a spare rack from my mini greenhouse and placed it in the bottom (Twas a struggle). Placed weed barrier cloth and now it's the most beautiful herb garden. Recycle Reduce Reuse 🌱
Great video. I followed your instruction and the bed looks identical. Just an FYI to correct the cut list in the description for the scrap 2x4 caps to 24”. Thanks for the great tutorial!
I'm going through the measurements, and if you cut 2 of the 12ft 2 x 10s at 62"+52"+28" and then the 3rd at 55"+55", you don't have to get the 8ft 2x10. It leaves you with a lot less scrap to work with, but it's one less board you have to buy. There will be 2" from the first 2 boards and 34" from the last.
You did a great job of explaining how to do this. Sometimes these type of projects look overwhelming but you made it clear that almost anyone should be able to build this beautiful raised bed. Say hi to Tuck!
Glad to hear that Denise,.I always worry that I am not being clear and concise when I am making these videos, so your words are a great relief to me and Tuck. I'll give the little guy some "good boys" from you. 🐕❤️
Your garden is looking so nice this year with all the raised beds, and square foot gardening beds. It's beautiful. I could just sit in your garden and just admire It's beaty all day.
I love the size and shape of the new bed/box you put together , you truly give us all a lot of info on well, everything...Keep your wonderful stories coming .You inspired me a lot and since I was inspired my husband had to be too if he wanted to stay living with me. LOL..My husband took up the job of building us three new raised beds that could fit in our back yard. I am working on maybe one more when spring comes through in 2021. I just love the idea of turning our yard into a food store that will grow lots of great food. Thank you from Montreal Quebec.
Love your videos James. Not only are they educational they are positive and joyful when right now there is so much stuff that is dark to be consumed by. Thanks!
Great work James. I really appreciate your great videos and easy to follow directions. You have great contagious energy and think of you often while I'm working on my gardens and expanded them. Our world is a better place because of you as you genuinely give and care about what you do. Thank you friend!
Thats a very very nice terraced raised bed. Love the hardware cloth and landscape fabric. Wish you had shown or told us how you made it level. I'm sure I could work it out, but you may have shown a better way. It will be fun to see what you grow in this terraced raised bed in the future. Thanks for showing us how to do this! It's great!
My young daughter and I watch your videos everyday James - you are so very positive and inspiring. I love this new box you've made. I'm thinking that the wire netting that you put on the bottom, will also help to stop mice and other small rodents from getting in from underneath, where the concrete is uneven. 🌿🌸🐝🐞☀️🌻🍓
One tip I have for leveling things up, supporting the structure and sealing from erosion is to use those bags of paver base. You can shim it with scrap and tamp it underneath which should also be semi-porous for water and resistant to soil loss. This was extremely helpful for a hillside terraced raised garden I set up this year, which was built in place. Peace.
This is such a great tip. I'm stuck working on only pavers surface so it should've occurred to me also; I guess I must take the leveled aspect for granted.
I really enjoy your videos....your a VERY peaceful soul minded person....your teaching abilities are unquestionably the best...i been watching you a long time but i just subscribed to your chanel thanks for your many talents.....
I am enjoying your videos a lot. I would suggest that if you can make videos of cooking also. Like salads directly from food forest, lunch from foodforest, dinner etc. I would love that a lot. Like picking fruits and veggies from garden and making salad out of it!!!
Wow, such a beautiful raised garden bed. I believe I will add that to my Spring to do list. Thanks for making the material and measurements easy for your lady audience. And thanks James for the information about Home Depot cutting the wood, very helpful.
Well, we decided to do an 8x4' bed...no terrace though. The soil is going to be deep and loose so deep rooting veg will be ok there. We shall do a tomato and cucumber trellis (your style) as well on the North side and the East facing sides.Ive got the plant clips, just waiting for the roller clips to arrive Pretty awesome. Thankyou so much James
A great video, James. I am glad you gave the correct measurments. They will be a tremendous help. I need two of these made. They will be a great cool weather project and will be ready for spring. Love for Tuck 💚💚💚💚💚 .
I hope to do an 8'x8' raised bed "key hole style'' with a 2' wide path (so the square foot area on the left will give me a 6'x4' growing area and on the right side, I'll have a 6x2' growing area and on the north end...I'll have an 8'x2' terrace . Should be fun. Thanks James, great idea
I think I will put melons in the deep one and cucumber/ egg plant / pickles in the shallow one. By installing a 7ft trellis from another video from you, stringing rope at top, I can train vining plants to shoot up. Where melons/ small H2O melons grow, have net slings at the top,for them to rest in. I will duplicate your idea but smaller. May do all four sides with a gride over top for side & center planting..(could do a reasonable grouping of cut down pallets on top) "imagination & practicality if key" "Ty James & 🐾🐆Tuck🙏👍💕
Looks good. I'm slowly building up my raised beds to 10" & 12" high. As they need replacement I'm doing this. I love this new raised bed you built. Thanks for sharing your idea with us. 💗💗🐾🐾for Tuck. 🌻💗🌻💗
What is your opinion on "wicking" self-watering gardening? Is it necessary for raised beds? I'm not a successful gardener, I'm learning from my mistakes. I'm watching a lot of different gardening videos from different people. What is your opinion of the best way to container garden and raised bed gardening?
What a great job! You made it look so easy 😏! Thanks for demonstrating how to make a raised bed in the small area. You also showed that math is very useful for normal, every day activities!! Stay well...
This is great, you are right with the caps on the edge of the beds - it smartens it up and makes it much more convenient! My old raised beds did not have them and they were really uncomfortable when leaning over! I’ll be revisiting this video before I build my next beds! Thanks James!
Thanks James! This reminded me of when I made 2 beds from redwood planks like 8 years ago and used fencing caps as well. They are just now showing some signs of separation from the corner posts I had used for stability. I’ve never used any linseed oil as the resin in redwoods is a natural insecticide. And I’ve never regretted the decision to put fencing caps. It gives such a polished feel to my small garden. I think I’ll be making another bed in the early spring that’s as high as your double decker but forming it into an L. Thanks so much for sharing the great ideas!
Those are some great ideas Zari! I like the L idea a lot. I will be building another bed in the near future also, a keyhole bed for maximum space efficiency. Thanks for watching and sharing your ideas my friend 🙏😁
Beautiful design. I'm stuck with an HOA that doesn't allow any exterior planting, so I've had to make and use only these for years in my courtyard on top of pavers. It's sweaty work and I'm so glad you're realistic with the volume of math and planning involved because it seems like no one ever considers these factors when they see them.
Getting ready to build a lot of raised garden beds on our new property/home! I can't wait! I cant decide on the sizes though! Idk if I should do them 2 x 8 or 3 x 8, do them all the same size or do some-shaped,
Did you mention, did you use pressure treated lumber? I thought I had every kind of clamp there was but never knew about the 90 degree clamp! Thanks for that tip! Wow that's going to help me a lot in my shop on wood projects because I'm always working alone.
Might be an old video, but a good one, I just got done building 3 of these raised beds but accidentally used 2x6 instead of 2x10s for the sides, I’ll still use them for shallower plants, but I’ll build some taller ones as well and all of them will have hinged hoop-houses on them, thanks for the awesome ideas in the garden, especially now-a-days! People are gunna have to start growing their own more!
James , can I ask why you don't move the top rail you put on your box so its flush on the inside of the box an hanges over an 1 1/2 outside so you don't loose 1 1/2 planting space all around the box ? Just a question
The biggest advantage of you hardware screening is that it will keep voles and other digging rodents from coming up from underneath and eating the roots of your plants
James is such a positive role model. I wish parents and teachers would show his videos to their children.
Awe, you're too sweet ❤️
I agree. His attitude is extremely positive and genuine. I hope his channel continues to flourish!

Amen to that!
Right angle clamps. Heck yes, I need a set of those. I needed a set of those decades ago. I have a feeling my life is about to get a little easier. I see raised beds in my future....
NICE! Added bonus for basket bottom is that it will keep slugs, voles, and other pests out from that direction. You might want to add some worms.
Yess!!! 😍
The hardware cloth is also good to keep the burrowers out. We did this for our raised beds because the goohers were bad.
I want to be like James when I grow up.
And I want to be like Tuck when I grow up 🤷♂️
Thank you little brother. This year will be my first time putting my raised garden a friend built for me in my backyard. Stoked. Thanks again!

I don’t have right angle clamps but use 4x4s the same height as the box, inside each angle, to square it up and lend support. Appreciate your videos.
You did a great job of explaining how to do this. Sometimes these type of projects look overwhelming but you made it clear that almost anyone should be able to build this beautiful raised bed. Say hi to Tuck!

I can't wait to make a bed like this. I would love to see you do a video of make one like this out of pallets if it can be done.
Oh my gosh, using the speed square as a guard is awesome! I get so frustrated at my not-so -great cuts!!!!! Thanks for the pro-tip!!

In addition, I think wood is less prone to rot when on the paver base vs. soil contact.

Thanks James for a good guide and explaining things in a simple way for many of us to understand.

You should do a video on some food preservation. Or do you eat the majority of them fresh? Inquiring minds want to know.
A great video, James. I am glad you gave the correct measurments. They will be a tremendous help. I need two of these made. They will be a great cool weather project and will be ready for spring. Love for Tuck 💚💚💚💚💚 .
I put 1/2" hardware cloth under all of my raised bed to keep the gophers and moles from going up into the beds.
Smart! 👍🏻
I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion! We've had a mole problem for years and I don't want them getting to my new beds.
Maybe you will need to add some worms in then ?
Where do you find the hardwood cloth? I could not find it at Home Depot.
The hardware cloth would be useful for people who have a mole problem as well. Great presentation! So useful! Greetings from Michigan. 😊

Really nice vid, just a tip, for the caps you can screw down the cap, then cut the end with the circular saw.
Thanks! My lower back hurts so bad since I planted last weekend, and it's not on the ground. I'm going to have to make my greenhouse w/ high shelves.
