- Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian looks at his game against FM Eugene Yanayt. The game had a very sharp middlegame. As a bonus, see if you can find the best moves in two positions.

Eugene Yanayt vs. Varuzhan Akobian, 2015: E00 Catalan opening
Lev Psakhis vs Jonathan Speelman, Hastings 45/454 (Speelman,J) (1987)
Varuzhan on every move "This is the moment now. You need to find a very good move here."
I love how Var goes through the game after all the moves. It is really good for learning purposes. His enthusiasm is also very much appreciated. :)
The world of chess is getting brighter because of your valuable lectures GM Akobian. You are great!
From Rolando Orro of the republic of the Philippines.
Akobian is an amazing teacher!
Akobian is an outstanding teacher, and I appreciate that he often analyzes some tough tactical challenges after the games !
I can watch this guy all day - amazing stuff. Better than any books I've read about chess.
Its realy a great way of teaching ....thanks for the video..
Excellent teaching! Thank you Var. Sorry I'm 6 years too late!
Good to to hear he said he prepared some positions shows his commitment to teach the kids.
really impressive work done!!!
“That’s not very good, you lose a piece”
amazing 9 moves .....calculation
Superb coaching 😊
excellent lectures! v.tough endgames though--wow!
Any chance we are gonna get that bishop knight vs king endgame that GM Akobian promised?
He had already promised to do that a few years ago, but it either didn't get uploaded or he forgot about it, and ever since then I have been waiting for it.
Now that he renewed his promise to cover that endgame, I am eagerly waiting for it!
amazing GMs can see 9 moves and beyond wow
Akobian is a patient and instructive teacher. One of my favorites.
GM Var enlightens & widen my knowledge in chess his style in teaching is the best!!! i hope we can hear well the suggested move from the audience for us to evaluate why not a a good move.
10 moves ago you find the wining move with other possibility its superrrrrrr
An excellent, instructive lecture from GM Akobian, as always. Would it be rude to ask what book this game was in? Was it by Jon Speelman by any chance?
The last game puzzle was brilliant. I found ...Rd2, Bxd2 Rxd2, Ke1 Rd7 attacking the bishop. Still playable at intermediate level. Computer does not give this variation, as it finds the stronger g4 idea, which is very hard to find for intermediate players like me.
At the end however, @ 40:30, instead of white's Rxd1, white has the option of playing Bxa5! and vacating the e1 square for the King. I think this way white does not lose a pawn and it is even stevens?
Nice lecture! Mind blowing!
Var is the best..Var and Yasser make the best teacher couple in the world..Do they even check out the comments on youtube or the club let them know?
Yes Yasser and Akobian should marry and have a baby together called Yasobian who would be the best Grand Master the world has ever seen.
Brilliant game and calculation by GM Akobian. A computer will refrain from taking the Bishop on e2 and just play Nc3, and accept a 2 point disadvantage. At GM level, 2 points should be easy to convert I guess. Amazing that FM Yanayt took the Bishop .. the difference between an FM and GM I guess. Super game and lecture!
Var you are the best. I learnt so much from you. Can you go over some good Grunfeld lines as black?
awesome man!
In the last game ( speelman )..isn't Nb7 possible? If rook takes then we double on the 1st rank and take the bishop?
Prashant Saraswat idiot
He’s outstanding! One day I’ll travel to St. Louis just to watch a lecture.
Dear Mr. Akobian, you are teaching me chess wery weell, so I decided to teach you how to pronounce "Zwischenzug" =)
At 25:50 a better move instead of Nh3 is actually Qd5(more forcing)
Any thoughts on 6. c5?
We want top ten chess opening against 1 d4 by Sir Akobian.
He thinks like a king 👏🏻
@ 16:45 why not kf6 to ke4 threatening f2
nice
can somebody tell me what they say at 22:13 pls ?
-miféle megnyitás ez?
-talán katalán..!?
:D
great combination, but black's task was relatively easy, finding all forced moves.
what i don't get, at first sight at least, is that in reply to ..Ba6 why White didn't try to develop the b1N to c3 instead of passively defending the e2P with the Rook.
Wow, He saw 9 moves in a row means 18 piece pawn movement, genius, how a human can achieve this level of imagination!?! someone tell me
+Vahid Alimohamadi Practise practise practise... also a lot of them are captures or attacks, so if you first analyse these important variations, you can actually find it after some time. Not that I would have found it, but it is not just a strike of genius, the point of the lecture is to learn this aswell! :)
+Vahid Alimohamadi u know that every grandmaster can play blindfolded full game ?:)
I also learned (somewhat surprising myself), that I can do this aswell after I played a few years in a club. That was when I was 16, 5 years ago. And still i am 600 Elo points below grandmaster level...
about 3 or 4 moves yes practice is helps but 9 moves??! I think it's more likes a gift!
So i'm thinking to learn and train blindfold chess
what about rook takes bishop before playing queen to d5?
Knight to e2+ ,bishop can’t take it as pinned by rook , white king only move is a1 , then check by black queen and mate in end game ,akobian sir pl comment
He's getting Katuff, the worst thing that can happen to the king is to get KATUFF to the backrank. P.s. It's a joke obviously, I ♥️ Var Akobian, his lectures are the best
28:40 the king if 'gut uff' on the back rank
Good one.
GM Varuzhan is fantastic, that kid in the crowd was terrible but Varuzhan was very patient with him.
Just keeping track of where I left off: 18:23
22:47 "The idea to go bishop b2"
You mean b7 don't you Vsruzhan!
These lecturers always point out when someone from the class makes that type of error, so I think it's funny to point this out. :)
17:00 Ne4 threatening Nxf2 should also win. if Rc2 Qd5 threat of discovered attack. If Kg1 then Nh3 mate.
Sound & VIsion bishops protecting h3 still also no
At 17:00, instead of Nh3, can Ng4 be stopped? It looks like forced mate. Am I missing something? He said Nh3 was the only move
He didn't say that was the only move
Then the queen came back to c2 to protect f2 and if you still have the initiative, you no longer have any advantage, you're down a piece so you can just drawn.... You have to let the white queen stay away from the action to win.
The GM idea is a forced line leading to a win, see at 19.55, it's a ten moves calculation... oO
At 16:02 wat if he moves the pawn to f3 ..can someone tell me why thats not better than rook takes rook...i know free rook but wat if he saw the attack?
Queen takes g4
Wow the first guy got strangled
last position why white dont play f3 ? who tell me ? knight is trap
In the position where he said only Nh3 wins, Qd5+ wins as well
Jan Chovlesky
No, it's loosing move, bishop defands h3, g2.
Jan Chovlesky
It is on 16:15
Shone Ml Its not losing, after Qd5+ and Kg1 you can play Nh3+ and after Bxh3 you play Qg5+ hitting the rook. It's still winning but nowhere near as convincing
Jan Chovlesky But how it can be winning, when you are then full piece down?
Because you pick up the rook for a knight.
Varuzhan I told you this many time before: stop shuffling your feet. It is a sign of nervous disposition.
training with board is the key to see this variation , don't use chess engine like Gm caruana say's
@37:53 Thank me later
37:54
lol
N e4
kat af
Actually it fails never mind
Someone tell him already that the plural of tempo is tempi ! :D
+EDAmirr both are correct.
39:59 "TELL ME WHY PAWN f3 IS WRONG."
"King takes rook.."
40:18 "Just move it."
"Move it? Correct, where!?"
Akobian mostly shows us games against much weaker opponents!2300 is NOTHING for a 2650!
Eddie Meltzer he does so in order to illustrate the tactical ideas that occur within those games. Perfect for lectures in my opinion.
