Amazing win. I've already watched this race a dozen times. I love this boy.

I'm not even a huge fan of horse racing, but watching these races is fun. I was cheering for Nyqvist because I'm a hockey fan and there's a hockey player named Gustav Nyqvist.

I backed Nyquist in the Breeders Cup Juvenile back in October and even back then I still couldn't believe the price I was getting that day. I couldn't then and still can't now understand all the doubters that seemingly still continue to surround this very talented colt? But being the consummate professional he is, he still just continues to go out and take care of business race in and race out, poking his finger into the eyes of all the naysayers, so to speak. The one big thing I really love about Nyquist is the level of calmness that he approaches all of his races with. It's like he knows this is his job and he's the one responsible for being in charge of this multi-million dollar franchise. Barring a fluke injury over the next 4+ weeks, I personally don't see anything beating him in the Preakness, but if Nyquist does ever have a moment where he might be vulnerable on the Triple Crown trail, and mind you I'm saying "if", I think it would be in the Belmont and most likely to come from some fresh colt bred to get 12f that hasn't gone through the whole Triple Crown grind. But even if Nyquist were to be turned over in the Preakness and/or Belmont, it still wouldn't change my opinion of him. Hypothetically, even if Paul Reddam retired Nyquist today, he doesn't have thing one left to prove on the racetrack. If Nyquist didn't run another step he would head off to stud as a 5-time G1 winner & 2-time G2 winner. Not too shabby by anyone's standards.

+Death Star Honestly, I told everyone around me before the race that if I had $5000. on me I would have bet all of it to this horse. I was so, very sure he was going to win this race. But I did not bet any. I thought it would pay only $1. something like that. OMG it paid $6.60 on$1. I don't know if he can run long distance, he is such a good horse.

      +Gel B He went off at 2-1. A $2 win bet returned $6.60 - your $2 bet back, plus $4.60 profit.

Big Brown in 2008 was the last undefeated horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Prior to yesterday, in its 142-year history, only 7 other undefeated horses had won the KD. Nyquist is now a perfect 8 for 8. His final time for the 1-1/4 mile Derby was a speedy 2.01.31. In comparison, American Pharoah ran it in 2.03.02. Secretariat, in '73, holds the race record at 1.59.40. No other horse ran the Derby in under 2 mins, although several came close:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Derby#Records .
Seattle Slew in 1977 was the only undefeated horse to win the Triple Crown. At that point 'Slew was a perfect 9 for 9. However, in his very next start as a huge favorite in the 1-1/4 mile Grade 1 Swaps at Hollywood Park he ran a disappointing 4th, beaten 16 lengths. He ended his career with a record of 17-14 2 0, with two narrow 2nd place finishes, a neck defeat in the G-3 Paterson Hdcp at the Meadowlands and a nose in the 1-1/2 mile G-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont.
American Pharoah would have been an undefeated Triple Crown winner if he hadn't lost his very first race. Under jockey Martin Garcia he finished 5th in his debut, 9 lengths behind the winner. Victor Espinoza picked up the mount after that. AP broke his maiden in his next start, a Grade 1 stakes!
Here are some interesting details on this from Wikipedia...
American Pharoah made his track debut in a maiden race over six and a half furlongs on the Polytrack surface at Del Mar Racetrack on August 9. Ridden by Martin Garcia, he started as the 7-5 favorite against eight opponents. He became unsettled before the race and, after running in second place until the stretch, faded to finish fifth behind Om, Iron Fist, One Lucky Dane, and Calculator, more than nine lengths behind the winner.[39]
He ran in a blinker hood, which appeared to unnerve him, as did the commotion in the saddling paddock. Baffert addressed his anxiety issues by removing the hood and stuffing cotton in the horse's ears for subsequent races.[40]
Despite his defeat, American Pharoah was moved up to Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity over seven furlongs on September 3.[41] He was ridden by Victor Espinoza for the first time and started as the 3-1 second choice behind Best Pal Stakes winner Skyway, with Calculator and Iron Fist also in the field.
American Pharoah took the lead from the start and went clear in the straight to win by four and three quarter lengths from Calculator, with a gap of more than eight lengths back to Iron Fist in third.[41]
Commenting on the colt's improvement, Baffert said, "We took the blinkers off, put cotton in his ears and schooled him a lot. He trained well, we decided he was ready and we put him in there. Today, he behaved himself and showed what he could do. He did what we thought he'd do the first time."[42]

The following is from the race comments section of the Results Chart:
NYQUIST came away in good order, was content to track the pace three deep, took closer order under confident handling leaving the three-eighths pole, overpowered GUN RUNNER soon into the lane, spurted clear while shifting towards the rail in midstretch, kept on under a downturned right handed stick and held EXAGGERATOR at bay.
EXAGGERATOR drafted back off the early pace saving ground, picked up steam into the far turn, angled out and aggressively knifed his way between foes nearing the quarter pole, swung out before being straightened into the stretch, then closed strongly to narrow the gap.
GUN RUNNER showed speed from the gate, was allowed to settle off of the leader while saving ground, eased out advancing toward the half mile marker, overtook DANZING CANDY departing the three-eighths pole, was confronted by NYQUIST soon after, held a slim advantage into the lane, then gave way grudgingly through the final sixteenth.
MOHAYMEN secured the rail around the first turn, shifted out and progressed three to four wide into the far turn, swung six wide entering the stretch, straightened away and churned on between rivals.
SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS was jammed up just after the start, steadied nearing the wire the first time while saving ground, leveled into stride along the rail, altered out and around a tiring rival leaving the far turn, dropped back to the inside cutting the corner into the lane, was maneuvered out sharply inside the three-sixteenths pole, straightened away and finished with a burst.
DESTIN came in at the break making contact with LANI at the start, was corrected and under a snug hold between horses through the first turn, moved up four wide under pressure past the half pole, pursued the leaders into the lane, angled in late but failed to muster the needed finish.
BRODY'S CAUSE rated back off of DANZING CANDY in the initial three-sixteenths, lost ground five wide into the far turn, continued wide for the drive and finished with interest.
MO TOM came in at the break tightening up the three rivals to his inside, tucked in and saved ground, came off of the inside and gained leaving the three-eighths, was steadied and fanned seven wide nearing the quarter pole, regrouped and kept on in a determined effort.
LANI broke slow and was bumped when DESTIN came in, settled off the inside, improved slightly into the far turn, was forced extremely wide approaching the stretch, recovered and kept on willingly.
MOR SPIRIT pursued four wide, came under a ride around the final turn, was carried out about six wide into the stretch and came up empty.
MY MAN SAM settled along the inside, tipped out and advanced between rivals, checked sharply off the heels of EXAGGERATOR inside the five-sixteenths when that one bulled through, leveled back into stride and stayed on with courage.
TOM'S READY was between rivals to the far turn, took closer order leaving the three-eighths, gave hard pursuit into the stretch and wilted. CREATOR was in close soon after the start, saved ground well off the early pace, commenced a run into the far turn, angled out near the five-sixteenths pole, checked sharply nearing quarter pole, bumped soundly with OSCAR NOMINATED entering the stretch, recovered to some extent and kept on.
OUTWORK stalked the pace three to four wide, but failed to keep up under pressure past the five-sixteenths and tired.
DANZING CANDY advanced wide and took command under the wire the first time, angled in when clearing, secured the rail to dictate terms, was collared three furlongs out, ceded command soon after and gave way readily.
TROJAN NATION checked soon after the start, lagged off of the pace along the inside, angled four wide entering the stretch, but failed to pose a threat.
OSCAR NOMINATED saved ground, edged forwardly nearing the half pole, came
just off the rail into the second turn, steadied when EXAGGERATOR came out, bounced around with CREATOR entering the lane, faded and was being eased late.
MAJESTO steadied early when in tight, raced three wide between rivals leaving the five-eighths pole, remained a presence to the far turn and tired.
WHITMORE settled towards the inside, ranged up past the five furlong marker, failed to respond leaving the three furlong pole and faded.
SHAGAF chased three to four wide for a half, faltered, was pulled up inside the furlong marker but walked off.

Nyquist is a great horse, no doubt about it. Id absolutely love to see back to back TC winners, but I don't think it'll happen. He will win the Preakness but will be overtaken on Belmont's punishing final stretch.

Nyquist has what they call "the killer instinct". That little 'something extra' in the tank when he needs it. All of the great ones had it. Barbaro immediately comes to mind. They just refuse to let horses pass them.

I hate to say this because I know it'll put a dagger in the heart of the "master" geneticists who bred these things, but my grandma has a 4.5 foot tall pony (head to hoof) that can sprint faster than these things.
I don't know if he could keep it up long enough to win but the fact that a small, randomly bred pony even has a chance against these genetic "masterpieces" is just sad.

+Bolby Ballinger It is the thrill of seeing that speed, speed that we can appreciate in reference to ourselves. I had a Vizsla that I regularly clocked at over 30 mph with the car...watched a deer in my headlights pour on the speed at the last second and sprint to safety... I love this race and I hate sports.

Do my eyes deceive me? Did Exaggerators jockey stop riding right after the 100yard mark and ease up on the line? It could have easily won. Man this is some crooked shit.
