I found gold right here, it is extremely difficult to find good information about stonework, but now y know what type of chisel do I need as a beginner. I'm looking forward to watch more video like this! Thanks so much for your information.
Thank you for taking the time to watch. And if you have any question regarding stone carving, feel free to send me an e-mail or a DM on Instagram with your question. I'll be happy to help if I can.
These videos are the best orientation for stone carving on the Internet. Clear, detailed, easy to understand instruction. And, how could you not like Mr. Jaber? I just wish there was more of a documented body of work by Mr. Jaber. I've been on his site and have viewed many videos but few examples of his finished executions are available. Especially large, complex carvings. I believe they would add more credibility for Mr. Jaber and inspiration for those watching the videos and who are considering signing up for private instruction. If Mr. Jaber would consider producing a compilation video of his most complex and detailed creations I'm certain it would be a joy for all.
I visited St Peter's in Rome and came away amazed as how magnifcent the floor was designed and constructed, so many geometric forms that dazzled my mind! I wish there was a video on how the floor of St Peter's was constructed!
Another great informative video. Nobody else produces and offers so much free advice and knowledge of stone carving .I have watched all the videos and have learnt so much . Thank you Athar .
I can't wait for my starters set from Trow and Holden to show up! Been waiting 5 weeks for it... So excited to start your course on Letter carving!! Thank-you so much for the amazing videos you put out!
A student on my Stone Carving Workshop sent me this link, and I think it's an excellent summary of tools. I think every professional stonecarver would suggest slight variations to your suggested capsule collection of tools - for example, I'd favour a dummy hammer + a medium vinyl mallet rather than a dummy hammer + and a pitching hammer, and I favour mallet headed claws, but nevertheless your video is really excellent. A very useful contribution to the field of stonecarving by hand.
Really well explained. I’m moving from wood carving to stone so this information helped a lot. I would recommend a lavalier clip-on wireless microphone to reduce the amount of echo ‘ reverb in your filming setting.
Thanks so much for the kind words and tip. I recently invested in a lavalier and hopefully it will make a worthy contribution in my future videos. Good luck with moving to stone carving and let me know if you need any suggestions.
Good questions. For beginners, I recommend starting with limestones in the softer range, ideally with a hardness of 2 or 2.5 on the Mohs' scale. If the stone is too soft, the chisel will not have enough resistance to carve through, while if harder - like marble - it might be a bit frustrating to start with.
This was a very informative video. You explained all aspects on "how to start" and very detailed manner. I will surely look into your other videos. Thank You very much
Athar, Thanks so much for your very clear and thorough presentations. I wish I had seen the pneumatic hammer assembly tutorial before I tackled it on my own. I almost did everything right.
I’m inspired to begin stone carving for my artistic expression. I’ve always been fascinated by rocks and stones. The labor involved is exactly what I’m looking for as well. When I’m fully ready, I think your course is going to be a perfect fit. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching. Great to hear that you are preparing to begin stone carving. Beware, it's addictive! And let me know if you need anything when starting out.
Thank you so much for teaching me. I’m happy that I have a good understanding of how I need to start. I hope for you to have an amazing future in your field 👌
Just out of curiosity about how much does a pneumatic hammer that you can use for both blacksmithing and stone carving cost, i have a massive compressor, the thing is borderline industrial sized. I also am planning on forging bronze as well but that is something I probably have the strength to do by hand, my forge is probably over a century old, its coal fired with a hand cranked blower if that helps.
How do I level one side of a stone? I get about using water to mark it, but how do I split it to get one side flat if there is no flat side? For example, I have a stone that is just eating through the angle grinder concrete diamond discs.
@@AtharJaber No clue. One stone I got from the shore of Lake Erie after a storm. It is extremely hard. I thought it was slate or shale, but its a lot harder than any other shale or slate from before. The other was used as a foundation for a old building - as in used for around 100 years. This last stone dulls all my tools quickly and even my tungsten tipped stuff gets messed up, as in one of the heads broke off, but that may be because its not all tungsten or cobalt. The stone its self looks like sand stone, but its hard enough I can sharpen tools off its surface.

Hello there! I've seen in a french video something called "Chemin de fer" to flatten stones and I can't find any information in english about that tool. If you google: 'Outil chemin de fer', you should be able to see it. But since I can't find its name in english, I can't order some.. I was wondering if anyone would know how they are called in english and where to find them in north america?
As a stone carver, what is your opinion on how the ancient Egyptians excavated, carved, transported and placed an average size 2300 kg stone? Sandstone is relatively soft. The 80 ton granite blocks, not so much. I’ve used bronze tools and let’s just say the edge retention seems suboptimal for such a task
Trow and Holden is another great tools manufacturer in the US. For other stores check out this list I compiled of stone and stone carving tools around the globe: academy.atharjaber.com/tools-suppliers/ Keep in mind that good quality stone carving tools are generally expensive. There's no way around it.
Is it possible to do large stone projects using only hand tools? I feel like power tools weren’t always around and I wonder how big stone projects got done by hand.
You can find very cheap coarse grit files in builders supplies and crafts shops. Buy several and, as they're not hardened, bend them in the desired curve. May come in very handy

Thanks so much for your very clear and thorough presentations. I wish I had seen the pneumatic hammer assembly tutorial before I tackled it on my own. I almost did everything right.
Thanks! pneumatic hammers are relatively simple tools as they don't have complex mechanics or electronics. I hope you were able to fix the problem!
Dremel stylo+ can for carving stone ? Thanks

How do you keep pneumatic hammers running smoothly other than lubricants? Are there internal parts that can be replaced?
Can you post a link to the really aggressive copper colored disc you showed?

Is there one centralized outlet for purchase of said carving tools?
Yes, check out this page with a list of many stone and stone carving tools suppliers around the globe: academy.atharjaber.com/resources/

Concrete discs are different from stone discs. Get a diamond disc specially made for stone. What stone are you using?

It's called a cockscomb, cock's comb or a stone mason's (french) drag.
