That's mujra not kathak. Kathak is performed in praise of Krishna.
Work Kathak comes from the word katha or stories of Shri Krishna and Gopi or Radha. Bollywood Moghulised kathak into mujra.
@Truth Prevails for your kind info dance is haram in Islam. Kathak is a dance form in praise of Bhagwan Krishna. How can it become a base for an Islam version of dance, I.e., mujra?
@Truth Prevails , Hinduism never had the word mujra in the first place for your uneducated info. Mujra is an Urdu word not Sanskrit. Now who is uneducated, and misinformed?

Mujra is essentially an Urdu word jeh@di qaum. And Kathak is done in praise of Bhagwan Krishna. Its not some tawaifs performing it!! Tawaif, mujra all are terms from urdu or islam!!

Don't call it a Moghul court. Kathak was always a katha of Krishna and Gopi or Radha. Actually Bollywood did the Moghulisation of such a beautiful dance form through mujras.
Kathak is Kathak everyone knows it's history and how it originated. Kathak was also performed in Mughal courts during the Mughal rule over SA. May be some changes occured during the time when it was being performed there right ? so by writing "mughal court" they are trying to distinguish between THE Kathak and the one that was performed in Mughal courts. Isn't it good to know that what they're performing here might not be exactly correct and identical to the original Kathak. It is good to know. Wouldn't it be more disrespectful to just write ''we are performing Kathak'' and when you see it it's a lil diffrent from Kathak. Wouldn't it be disrespectful. There's no merging here. Kathak that is a classical dance dating thousands of years and is performed for lord Krishna in his love and the diffrent version of it that was may be accidentally formed during Mughal time when it was performed in court. These not the same and we know that.

Origin of Kathak
The origins of this dance form, as said in the ancient “Natya Shastra” by Bharata Muni, was to have originated from between 400 BCE to 500 CE. It was believed that dancers picked the form up whilst trying to depict the stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with musical narration.
@Imteyaz Husain With the arrival of Mughals in India, kathak entered the Mughal courts in the 16th century and with the passage of time, it transformed itself from being a dance which had the fervour of bhakti rasas to sheer entertainment in praise of the Muslim kings...
So don't try to debunk others facts because you are low on knowledge!!
Kathak is essentially done in praise of Bhagwan Krishna. He is not part of Islam.

As if has it not been distorted, you would have been a kathak dancer today? Do you send your kids to learn kathak and contribute in the legacy and continuity of Indian culture? Or you just give lectures here ? Time and art are never static and it keeps evolving, changing and adapting to newer contexts and processes. Mughal rule was reality in indian contexts, so kathak moved from temples to Mughal courts, adapting to reality, later provincial awadh court and it's rulers added sophistication and rule based kathak art forms, which today we have in form of performing arts of kathak. You can attempt to refine kathak and bring it more closer to what it had been before Mughals but the reality that the journey from being a temple art to becoming a performing arts has not totally been dirty and something to be ashamed of. Why don't you learn kathak and spread it among young generation? Do you care for your art traditions or your history ? If yes, please go learn kathak and make your youtube channel and post videos so we can learn kathak from people like you who are so concerned
about our history. Would you ?

@@Janamejayan5 you mean to say kathak is all about story ? Which world do you live in ? There are different parts of kathak, each stage follows another and not all performances are based on some themes. They are doing Salami and Nritya (abstract dance) not based on any particular theme or story. This is important component of kathak after it transitioned from temple art to Mughal courts. Kathak's horizon was expanded from mere story telling to abstract movements and dance which they are doing in form of salami.
Now it is a different case if you are those kind of people who think that mughals destroyed kathak and bla bla. I would like you to say these things to a legend who actually performs kathak, and they will slap you with their reasoning that art is not politics. Art keeps evolving, so have kathak throughout centuries. Thanks to wajid ali shah who refined kathak to brought it to its original sophistication which we have today. He patronized Thakur Prasad Maharaj ji who was his guru as well. It was from here that we hear great names in kathak from Lucknow and banaras gharana, Sambhu maharaj, lacchu maharaj, birju Maharaj and endless names.
