  • In this video I take a peek under the covers of the Slabbie and I don't like what I see.
-I cut a new Key (it didn't come with any keys)
-I try to get the electric's working
-Try to get it to turn over for a compression test
-Find some nasty stuff in the fuel tank

Thank you! It will be a long a hard road ahead I’m guessing, the engine will be the hard part I’d bet, I’m not too worried about the rest of it, that will be fairly easy I think.

Good job so far. I'm slowly getting motivated to tackle mine. Bought it in January 1987 with 4000 km on the clock, now has 46000km on. Got rear ended 12 years ago by a young dude on his phone while driving 😢 Bike is totally original still, except for the tailpipe. I need the switch cluster on the right side. Maybe I'll also do a video like this...

Cheers, I won’t get to the restoration until winter. Most of it should be fairly straight forward -- it’s just the engine that has me concerned

The sidestand/clutch lever/neutral switch combo can throw some people as it wont start. Can be a hassle some times but also a life saver. Early 2000's some one tried to steal my bike, they had ignition switch hot wired and ready to do but cause they did not put up the side stand or pull in clutch. bike did not start, that was the only thing that saved me from loosing my bike.

AIRBOX is the first bit to go in the frame at the factory..... and the last bit to come out.
Yes..... it doesn't just need the carbs removed but also the engine !!!!!!!!
Restored several of my own and unfortunately this is the case.
The box would require somehow slicing in half (top and bottom ) to be removed. Then somehow rejoining the halves.
Even undoing the mounting bolts, tilting back, removing carbs and plastic tracts to motor will not work.
Main problem is the height of the AIRBOX. It cannot clear the frame and gearbox top surface.
Looking forward to seeing what you do.
I've done three of these and they're pretty simple machines.
Removing engine is easiest if you make a cradle, throw the bike on its side, undo all fasteners and lift the frame off. It's really light without front and rear suspension.
Easy to out back together again this way.
    Anyway Best of luck 😊

great project.....we here in ireland have been using bandit 1200 engines in the early gsxr's for years and they will fit....you might have to drill out the back of the frame to fit the engine mounting bolt if i remember rightly also they are only a 5 speed gear box,try and use the flat slides as cv carbs are a bitch to setup without airbox. but i'd be trying to sort the 750 motor in it.....good luck with it. rgds

Just seeing the lights and the starter working is a good sign. Hopefully the engine is okay, but even if you have to do a bit of a tear down, it will probably be alright.

Hi John, yea, I’m 99% sure illl end up tearing the engine down. Rings and valves at minimum, while I have it apart . We will see.

Interested in seeing how this project go's. My brother bought one of these new in 87, it was a fun bike to ride, at least until my back and neck gave out. A popular mod in the early 90s here in socal was to swap out the original 750 mill for a GSXR 1100 motor. Curious about the frame, it appears to be anodized? How are you gonna handle that? Good luck on this project!

    • @true-moto-resto
      @true-moto-resto  Рік тому

The main part of the frame does appear to have a clear anodized coating. Once it’s cleaned I will see how it looks. The rear subframe is just painted I think. Re anodizing will be cost prohibitive not to mention no where to do it where I live, I’m lucky to have hydro and running water.
