June 1st 2021, just had my Thumb delivered a couple of days ago, and I haven't been able to put it down. I cannot believe I spent two decades hating on Warwicks...any and all of them! I guess it only took playing my first one to completely convert me. I now own 5, two of which are Masterbuilds.
Completely agree that Thumb is the best bass ever. Body shape, tone, versatility. Piece of art for sure. I used to play the BO, 2001 version. Just amazing. Thanks for the video. Wish to hear more your sound samples ;-)
Good review buddy. They are phenomenal basses. I have a '93 NT pretty much the same as yours except no volute and mine has side LED's. It's my go to bass. I also have a '91 Steamer Stage 1. Another great Warwick.
That's a beautiful bass! I'm usually more into Fender/Music Man type basses (not necessarily those brands but the classic style). But I always had a sweet-spot for Warwick. Not only because my roots are close to where they're made, I love so much more about them. The distinctive sound, the craftsmanship, and the original style that stands out but doesn't look flashy. They feel awesome and they work for so many different styles of music but still keep their own strong and distinctive character. It's _the_ Warwick bass in my opinion, and yours is one of the most beautiful examples. Thanks for sharing!
@@jed_shred_guitars I love it so much because of the build quality and craftsmanship. I love it so much that my next bass will be a Warwick Starfire II bass for that vintage tone that my Fender p Bass with flat wounds can’t seem to nail. The distinctive tone sound of the bass in the Animals “ House of the rising sun “
@@jed_shred_guitars I subscribed because it was your video that led me to buying this bass. Keep posting them. People like me are watching them. And we appreciate them very much. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I was clicking around looking for a UA-cam channel that was cool, chill, and actually had someone that I liked and I thought about you, searched “Warwick thumb review” and you popped up first. Thanks again !
I have played allot of fenders in the past. Then one day i tried a Warwick corvette. i was blown away. Still i dont like the modern shape but the feel is so great. No i search for a more vintage style warwick like an old streamer stage 1 or maybe a thumb.
Great video pointing out the features of the thumb. Didn't answer my search for a fix for neck dive though, I enjoyed it anyway. I have a bolt on Thumb fretless. I get neck dive, not a lot, but enough to cause pain in my left shoulder. love the bass. It was a 2001 limited edition fretted bass. some idiot tore all the frets out and didn't finish the neck properly. I had it fixed and it plays beautifully now. They are an awesome bass. I also have two corvettes, both B/O, my first is a $$ with the thick neck, the other is a white corvette fretless standard B/O with the thin neck. This white corvette is my favourite at the moment, better balanced and feels great .
I bought a 5-string Thumb BO recently, just because the price was too good too pass. It surprised me in a good way. There is something about that natural wood, it's like a mix between a musical instrument and high end furniture. On the other hand - setup can be tricky, I didn't quite got it yet, I think the bridge is a bit too high, cannot adjust string height by lowering them on the frets. And I didn't want to risk adjusting intonation with a regular screwdriver, I ordered some with angle, hopefully will get them soon.
Bought a 1986 JD Thumb from a ‘bargain bin’ in either NJ or CT years ago. I restored it to original specs and Hans-Peter Wilfer sent me a newly drawn schematic for the MEC preamp/EQ. Great company, excellent basses.
i love warwick basses ,have owned a corvette standard as well as a double buck. Both were amazing in their own ways , but i would love to have a thumb one day.
I accidentally got the chance to play a Corvette fretless.... it left such an impression I had to get one mine is used but in perfect condition still... after setting it up better I can hardly put it down fantastic guitar it's super well built and great sounding couldn't be happier I wish they were easier to buy though
I used to own a German-made Thumb NT4. Gigged extensively, but never fell in love with it because the first fret always felt a mile away. Guess it was the long scale length.
Warwicks are the best! I’ve had a 2004 corvette standard BO for a while now and it’s the best sounding and feeling bass I’ve ever played, only gripe with it was the passive mec electronics were not good and the pickups are noisy even in parallel, they sound good tho after I completely resoldered new pots and a different cap for the tone pot lol, what I’ve found is just messing with the balance of the pickups can really bring the bass forward in a mix, cutting the volume of the bridge pickup a little gives the bass a throaty sound really good for pick playing and cutting the neck gives you a barky growly tone with lots of punch
Hey man I'm 5"8 too and I play a 2011 GPS Streamer 4 string, I dont have mine up by my chest not low by any means, I have the contour sitting on my hip and its the most comfortable instrument I've ever played. As for the neck, I made sure it had a thin profile because I have pretty small hands too. The tilt angle doesn't need to be particularly steep to be able to play the lower frets comfortably, I think the horn length has something to do with this. Anyway I still want a Thumb!
I just bought a 97 model.1 owner its been well taking care of.. I love it. I have been wanting 1 for 20 years... I just need to figure out how to do all the setup work haha
I have a 99 NT5 and it’s my baby! It’s my 2nd one I sold my other one in 2010 and missed it every day, I have the brass nut and I highly recommend spending the money and adding it, you won’t regret it and it just looks so sexy, I’m sure like you Ryan is the reason i play them 🤘😎
a friend who has played with someone who is famous and hes done studio work for some famous people has one and he doesnt like it, it is the bolt on and has bad neck dive. he also says that it doesnt cut through a mix for shit. he does like the contoured body though. he also plays a sandusky metroline and the metroline eats the waewick for lunch. im currently building him a fretless neck through 4 string bass that will be a hybrid between the metroline and the thumb.
that's what she said..Bro, the Warwick basses are the first bass that I played in a shop, 30 foggin years ago and the acoustic tone and the resonance went right to my soul. At the time I couldn't justify the price tag but it was "I HAVE TO HAVE ONE OF THESE!"-moments in my bass playing life. Switch to changes in life happening, I walk into a used-shop, happens to be a Rock Bass in there, wasn't quite right but reminded me of the TONE., Long-short, I bought a '98 Corvette and a Robert Trujillo Streamer. But you know what I am talking about when I say, when the string vibrates, I VIBRATE, I can Feel it. For my own brief review of the Rock Bass: Na-ah. Nice bass, good tone but didn't touch what the '98 does. Getchoo1.
Do you remember what years had the baseball bat necks? I used to own a 2007 Thumb BO BN and it had a huge neck, then I went to a 2003 thumb bo and it seemed MUCH thinner
I like the little scale riff in your song but I'd put some pinch harmonics in it or something or you can do another variation of it making it a little more funky with some bends.
Good track for bass test. Cool you played on mudvayne track. Very knowledgeable and if you keep pumping videos I think a lot of people are going to like you man. Stick with it.
My band buddy is such a great guitar player but I love his bass guitar playing he slaps the shit like buckethead lol I'm considering get a bass and learning that in the near future.
Warwicks are my favorite instruments of all time. My number one bass is a 1994 Streamer Stage II 5-string. Feels like an extension of my body. The natural wood in my hands, the heavy resonant body. All of these things make Warwicks truly amazing! Sounds like you're discovering all the awesome attributes to being a Warwick owner including being able to email the man the myth the legend HP himself! Love yours man. Cheers. Also P.S. I'd strongly recommend a brass JAN 3! You'll notice a tonal difference.
I have girl hands too so I appreciate that you explained the difference in neck widths over the years. I agree with others that it would have been nice to hear it alone. Thanks!
Awesome bass man, I would definitely want to add a Warwick to my collection one day. And with the recordings, try out Neural DSP Parallax, insane plugin!
@@jed_shred_guitarsI now own this after it’s traveled around a bit. Same serial number, same small worm dent by the neck pickup. Amazing bass… can’t believe I found it in this video.
If you want to hear a beautiful Warwick sound you need to check out Job for a Cowboy's last album "Sun Eater." I'm not sure if death metal is really your thing or not, but the song "Sun of Nihility" is ungodly when it comes to both bass tone and bass playing.
I can find different guitars of different brands that sound, feel, and play similar or better than each other... But there's no other bass with the feel, snap, or tone of a thumb.
