My childhood. The last time I ever rode one of these trains was when my mother was coming from the Bronx to Staten Island, taking my sister and I to my grandmother's house from her house. It kind of sucked that day--getting that train instead of the R142A, but it was still a good ride.

So true, so true. Dont really know why thats being "estoppeled", almost becoming Communistic. Think it's a mean ploy. A lot of motorman are annoyed by subway fans standing next to them, when their cab/closet door is open. Sensed that a few times in Aug 1982, when first-car-riding subway trains back then...Some were actually friendly. Sensed I had a deep interest, and actually shared info on train motoring/operation!! They chose the 6 line to get affected with R62As because they knew not a lot of passengers ride local trains compared to express trains.

Hum 6 trains and a rainbow of train roster with R33 WF to R28 RB to R62s before getting a whole fleet of R142 and dumping the cars on the flushing line now the R62s are going back to the mainline 6 where they belong where all IRTs locals run them plus they are very fast on 3 train from when going express

That’s sad that they had to dump it in the ocean like why would they have do it when the MTA can make new versions of the 1990 Redbird trains

Angela Rosas, agree, but don't think it's that simple/feasible to re-create, re-construct subway cars of those vintages, late 50's/early 60's. Would not be cost-effective. Besides, separate carbuilders are contracted after bidding establishes a price. The MTA/NYCT hasn't a thing to do with building, out-shopping, delivering rolling stock. Other jurisdictions are relegated to that..However, totally on your side there, dear. I'm a nostalgic person. Pleased to see/hear that old, prewar IND R1/R9s have been restored and run as the December Holiday Train!! Just great! Would love to "motor" those!
Besides, rather than scrap those cars, the MTA decided to contract a company to dispose of them by "reefing"..i.e., Placing the carbodies on huge barges, taking them out to the Atlantic, way past breakwater, and..guffawh...dumping them to their resting places, where they can be "repurposed" for marine life to create new habitats. From what I hear, the MTA ceased doing that as of late..Feel same as you there..!!
