- Time lapse build of one of the first Smyth Performance mini truck kits for the 99.5-04 VW golf/Jetta 4 door sedan. Thanks to Hestermann Motorwerks for the great work. The newer mini truck kit contains all the CNC-cut filler panels and a new rear window surround without the quarter windows. These early vw ute kits launched what is now the biggest car-to-truck operation in the world.

Instead of doing pop rivets , can i do it old school with real aircraft rivets, where possible?

oh man first time see the little pickup, I can imagine how economic work would be done with this little pickup here in Los Angeles , good job guys, this guy has engineering talent.
It would not be capable of doing work at all, Jettas aren't that powerful
I've seen this after the Beetle Ute and I think that this one is killing it! The tail lights are really SELLING it as a real truck and the more useable and simpler bed makes so much sense if you want to carry more than a surfboard!
If and when I get my ‘01 TDI Jetta back from my daughter I am doing this. Love it!! Before I gave her to my daughter we had a love/hate relationship. I loved the mileage and that she was a diesel. But she wasn’t a truck. Being a truck driver for 24 years I’m partial to trucks.

A great looking job , my only Beef would be using pop rivets & not doing any welding to give it any Strength , the ute Looks fantasic !
I built one of these around the same time as this one was being built. I still own it and use it frequently. Mine has the 2.0T motor with the DSG box. Great combo. It hauls a load and it hauls ass. BTW, you do know that all civil aircraft are riveted together, right? If it's good enough for Boeing and AirBus, it's good enough for me. My GTI based Ute usually hauls a couple of mountain bikes or canoes, but has also hauled over 900 lbs of junk to the dump a few times too.
Weve learned alot in the 8yrs since this vid was posted.
3m panelbond is THE way to go, at that point the rivets just hold it till its cured.
Mines so stiff ,when I jack the front end up on one side to change a tire, the other side comes off the ground within another 2".
When you do the same in the back, it pretty much lifts the whole back end from either side.

What an excellent idea. I believe there would still be plenty of demand for small pickup style vehicles like this for so many people who'd like a light economical pickup car/truck like this. Excellent concept and demo, Mark Smith. :-)

Nice. I miss mini pickups and so does my brother. He has an early 90's S10 that's over 300,000 and has no idea what to replace it with.
I am tempted to do this but I would copy the inner side panels and cab panel bend out of 18 gauge metal, and weld to structure and along bottom edge to help stiffen it . I think it’s cool !

Gosh, this is terrific and you are to be applauded but you need a shop and your neighbors must really appreciate having a body shop next door and sanding dust all over the place...
for a little dust I will bet the neighbors receive a ton of help from Andrew here...handy car guys are always the most helpful sort...the neighbors scored when he moved in.
I just bought my second Jetta TDI wish I would have seen this video last week cause I would have made it into a little truck instead of letting the dealer screw me out of it
