The origin was pretty accurate but with a few exceptions. One of the are where he gets his powers. In the original myths, Odin got his powers by hanging himself from the World Tree for 7 days and afterwards he could successfully control runes. This is probably where the Odinforce is based on.
William Conwell Not killing him. But not resurrecting him. He found Odin in a different plain (sp?) Fighting Sutur. Odin bestowed him the Odinforce, then renamed it: The Thorforce.
William Conwell Sorry. Misread your comment. But Odin also did the Same for Bor. He didn't bring him back either, after Bor was "killed". He inherited his power at that point. Because the power seems to follow the family line and go to the oldest on line. (That part is speculation.)

Zorastorm 32 yeah, spider man has always had a special place in my heart, I think he has enough power to be really interesting but he isn't so powerful that he is unfathomable powerful. Great video. The story of creation in Marvel comics follows its real world counterpart somewhat. One of the main deviations I know of is the fact that after Odin and brothers kill Ymir they are supposed to make Earth out of his body. The ocean was his blood, they sky his skull, the clouds his brains etc.
If you had read it, it would have been really simple for you to leave a comment saying, "Yeah the marvel version is really similar to the real mythology."
Im quite curious about it, but there seem to be so little we know about it that isnt just written by christians (and one muslim) and is giving a false image about it.

That's another reason the earth x, universe x, and paradise x were cool stories. They gave a really unique and interesting take on the origin of Asgard that sees Loki and Thor working together to overthrow Odin after finding out their real heritage. Definitely check it out if you haven't read it before

THOR...I forget which issue exactly..(possibly an Annual)..."When The Gods Make War"...Good story...No clear victor. Esp. since Odin and Zeus had other things of greater importance to deal with...Namely The Celestials.
Because Zeus is the king of the gods and god of thunder and lightning. So who would he fight in the final showdown? Thor or Odin? It's almost congruent. Lol.
And since you were on the subject of pocket Dimensions I think one of the funniest illustrations to ever come out of Marvel was the one where Deadpool pokes open the pocket of Eternity I think it was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time
*Rob,* you'd likely enjoy, _"Norse Mythology"_ by Neil Gaiman (he narrates the audible version -it's the best thing coming out of Audible right now), he seamlessly retells all the most important Norse stories together as 1 unified story. It can be easily finished out in a couple days tops. This Marvel is pretty close to the actual Norse genesis story.
God rob i fucking LOVE how organized you keep your videos! I dont need to scroll down for 20 min to find a video for reference its all neat and tidy. Haha keep up the great work you and Benny keep me sane! 😂
This version of the origins of the universe is nearly exactly how the universe started according to real Norse mythology. With only Orin's story being a little off with what happened to his brothers and how he became powerful.
Well from what I know about the creation of Earth from Norse mythology is that Vili, Ve and Odin kill Ymir and use his remains for the whole of Earth and the sky. His blood makes the seas, his flesh makes the ground, his bones I believe make the mountains and his skull is used to make the sky. (Also it was said that his sweat gave form to the frost giants)
Asgard is an upscale, high-tech, gated community which is probably the best place to live. Unlike Themyscira, a gender biased residency whose architecture hasn't been updated in centuries.
I think Asgurd is a cool place .And Marvel makes it cooler in comics ,I have not read up on the true myths of Asgurd ,But you did a good take on it Rob ,And when I was younger Thor was one many superheroes .That thought was cool !
So the mythology is kinda right. Generally its right, its just that there is a bunch of little stuff not in there. If you like modern fantasy or Tolkien like stuff, you will find it rewarding to read up on Norse mythology. Honestly its not that time consuming to study up on. Edith Hamilton's mythology covers Greek and Norse myth. But if you want the original sources you need to get a translation of the Elder Edda and the Prose Edda. Norse mythology is very influential from fantasy to the names of the days of the week, so feel free to explore it. If you like
I love this already Marvel takes some of the mythical aspects of the religion and some is right and some is Marvel but it's entertaining not the less. I thank you for your time for these great videos. Now I'm signed up and can't wait for the rest of the Thor saga and other heroes of Marvel.
Norse Mythology is the best, to me. Which makes the MCU's version incredibly lackluster, boring and one big wet dream for a science nerd. In the original mythology, you've got all the best elements from D&D in it; dragons, wood elves, dwarves (who are NOT dark elves) and loads of other things. You have sorcery, epic fantasy, heroes and ancient kingdoms. With the MCU version...it's all "magic is just science we don't understand" (which I call BS to.) For me, the only Marvel properties that seemed to have nailed Asgard and the Nine Realms appropriately are in the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon and the Thor: Tales of Asgard movie
M Sall: Surprisingly many; Balder and Hod (on account of having been left in Hel (the place), when Hel (the goddess) brought all the other dead with her to fight in Ragnarok), two of Odin's other sons (Vidar the silent god and Váli), Honer, Thor's two sons and two humans.
At least Marvel comics made the Asgardians actual gods and how accurate Ragnorok was compared to what the MCU did. Plus we got to see variety of Norse gods in the comics. And the comics are visually more interesting and complex than what movies show.
Yes Rob, This story is pretty close to the Norse Mythology from Neil Gaiman. The only thing I didn't see in the video was that Marvel didn't mention was that only the Gods can travel through the rainbow and anything else that tries to walk on the rainbow will burn. But it was pretty much on point.
I like to use a Bubble analogue for explaining asgard and other pocket dimensions in marvel. Like the main Reality is a big bubble and asgard and the otehr dimensions (Dark dimension etc.) are like smaller bubbles that are stuck on the side of the bigger, main bubble.
One of the coolest norse myths is that Freya is kind of equal to Odin and has her own hall like Valhalla and gathers her portion of the dead.Or that Balder will survive Ragnarok and will be the progenitor of a new race of gods. Or that Odin has actual giant blood coursing through his veins
Apart from Odin getting the powers of his brothers and the whole Odin force thing (In the actual myths they stuck around and took control when Odin was out wandering. Also according to Loki, they slept with Frigg a lot.), what you covered here is fairly accurate to the original Norse mythology. Most of the differences are in the details or comes later, in particular when it comes to Loki. They do seem to have skipped a lot though, for example Odin killing Ymir and making Midgard out of his corpse (probably because Kirby changed that in Tales of Asgard).
I know this post is old, but my favorite theory about the origin of the structure of Asgard is it’s the remanence of the exploded planet they once had before it’s Celestial emerged.
It'd be awesome if you had like a "sit down" or "podcast" type thing with a Norse Mythology professor or expert and talked about how close the comics come to the myths.
@ComicsExplained The origin story there is actually pretty damn close, I'm no expert but I do have an interest in Norse mythology, Looking forward to your Fear Itself video, I've already read it so I know what happens but it will be awesome to see your take on it.
The Marvel version of the Norse creation myths is fairly close but obviously with license taken to make our favorite race of Kirby-esque super aliens. A few main things of difference I've noticed... 1) Vili and Ve don't have an attested death that I'm aware of in any of the Eddas or Sagas, but they have been noted to have ruled in Odin's stead in some stories. Also no Kul the Serpent, he's all comics. 2) The jötnar in Marvel are simplified down into Frost Giants, but in Norse Mythology the fact that their father was Ymir, the giant of primal frost, didn't carry to them all being tied to frost or ice. They were typically associated with abstract or primal forces (like Angrboda the Jotun of Sorrow or Thjazi a shapeshifting wild man of a giant), or were the embodiment of massive natural phenomenon (Aegir for the Ocean and Jord, the Earth and Thor's mother in the original legends). Also if you're going to be dealing with Ragnarok, you should totally look up Lokasenna, since Loki being bound by the Aesir is one of the events leading up to Ragnarok in the old stories, it's amazing to see that one of the accounts of why he was imprisoned was basically breaking into a party that Aegir was throwing after being thrown out for killing a dwarf servant and then proceeding to Rap Battle every single god in the hall until Thor shows up and repeatedly threatens to knock his head off. I can't do it justice, if you haven't read it, find it! Loki gets savage.
From what I understand, the Marvel version of Asgardian lore is pretty much the same as Norse mythology except that it is expanded upon by artistic license. And from what I remember off the top of my head, there isn't supposed to be anything after ragnarok. It was an event that they all prepared for and hoped to win, but Thor gets killed by Fenrir according to prophecy. As it was an event that followed the apocalypse, there could be no record of what happened on Midgard (earth). That's what makes the marvel version of Asgard so interesting. It fills in the gaps that real Scandinavian lore had lost to history. But I'm sure you knew that before you posted this video.
Hey Rob, one question here. Are we supposed to understand that the MCU is all Filled in with the Pocket Dimensions and there's no other dimension but the pocket ones? Like, Dormamu dark dimension @Dr.Strange movie or the Quantum Realm @Ant-men or even Kun-Lun @Iron-Fist series or Asgard @Thor movies?
The creation story is actually pretty close to the real mythology. In the Poetic Edda it is said that Odin, Villi and Ve created the world from the body of Ymir the frost giant. Odin also created the first two humans Ask and Embala from a tree. Marvel's Asgardian lore diverges from the source material dramatically after that. For example, Loki was not Thor's brother (He was Odin's), Thor was generally described as being a large, bearded ginger and not a long haired aryan and Surtur does not even appear until the events of Ragnarok itself.
Well with Thor being my favorite character. I thought this was amazing!!! and the marvel version of the mythology is close to the real world version of it. odin, and his brothers do slay the giant Ymir, and his bones, flesh, blood etc make up the world. there is a cow, that licks an ice block and boom, humanity is born. and your right Mr.Robb, it's too vast a mythology to mention in 10 minutes or even in a comment section of a UA-cam video.
