Does anyone with a Mac knows how much faster/slower v-ray is compared to other in real time? I have the new M2 Max with the highest spec. I got the computer because it best fits my needs and gives the same power output across the board whether its plugged in or not. I‘m willing to accept the fact that it might take a little longer to render, but just looking to get an idea of what big of a difference it would be. Thanks for any and all help for anyone.
I'm interested to know the same. I am looking to update my 2017 MacBook Pro and thinking the M2 Max might do the trick but would love to learn of any experience out there...
The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at V-Ray Benchmark scores here: benchmark.chaos.com/v5/vray?search=macos&index=1&ordering=desc&by=avg&my-scores-only=false. You can search for the hardware you have and see what the scores are, then look at other PC hardware to get a sense of the difference. When you compare two score numbers, you can get a rough idea of the performance difference by assuming that the ratio between the scores would map somewhat to the ratio of how long a render would take. So if one setup was 40,000 vsamples and the other was 20,000, then you might expect the 40,000 one to render twice as fast as the other. HOWEVER, in reality, this may not be the case as there are many other hardware factors that will play a role... so you just want to use that math as a guideline to see roughly how much faster certain PC setups will be.
Hi Alex, thanks for such a helpful video. One question, Im about to buy a new laptop to use sketchup and considering Macbook Air M3 but quite worried of throttling when rendering.. Do you think Air M3 is enough for rendering or should I buy Pro line up? You said it may requite at least 36GB of RAM for M1 chip but wondering if there is any change since Macbook is using M3 now.
We should mention first that if you would consider an NVIDIA-based PC, it would be a faster option than any Mac. That being said, if you prefer a Mac, you would be better off with the Pro version over the Air as it comes with hardware that will be able to handle the rendering calculations faster.
Hey Alex! Great video! I’m just wondering how long it typically take to render a detailed kitchen in VRay on the MacBook that you use? I use an old 2015 MacBook Pro 2.9GhZ and I feel like it will never render a high quality image 😐

Hi Alex.. Whould the Mac Stdudio Max (basic model) be good for Autocad (3D drawing) & sketchup (photosrealistic rendering)… or what would you suggest ? Thanks for de advice 🙏🏻
Yes, it would be a great computer for your needs. When it comes to photorealistic rendering though, just know that any type of Mac will be slower to produce the renderings than a comparable PC with an NVIDIA GPU. But you can still certainly use a Mac to produce the same quality renderings.
Any recommendations on what laptop to buy? I just don't really know about those fancy specific technicals or the numbers. I just want to draw my house using sketchup with ease and speed
AWESOME Coffee cup! Running on a laptop with i7-9750H with 32GB ram and Nvidia RTX 2070. Sometimes, it runs like a 1979 Chevrolet Chevette trying to merge into 80mph rush hour traffic. Thinking about transitioning to a desktop machine. The multi-GPU principle was a major "Ah-ha" moment. Thank you!
Great video, thanks. A question for Sketchup, wondering which laptop is better to run Sketchup with Vray in between Samsung Book4 ultra with Nvidia 4070 and Macbook M3 Max 40 core GPU ? Any suggestion, please advise, thank you.
A 2016 Macbook Pro should be able to run V-Ray for SketchUp so long as it meets the minimum requirements listed here: docs.chaos.com/display/VSKETCHUP/System+Requirements
I’m looking at a Used Surface Pro 4 (older version)This video was helpful. Now I have to research which graphics card is included and if I can upgrade it later.

Hi Alex, i am in the market for a new laptop and i am on a tight budget i have narrowed it down to 2 laptops one with a gtx 1650 and another with a rtx 3050 both are 4gb cards would like to know which one should i get as i would like to render my designs and if the 1650 is good enough to get those render its fine as well
When I try to export dwg linework, that when my pc gets slow and takes forever to export. I have a Ryzen 7 3800 8 core 3.60GHz + GTX 1660ti. + 32gb ram.
Hello, I have a question, I'm currently running a Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 3070, 32GB RAM and I'm going for photorealistic drawings. As I feel like it is still slow, as it took me the whole night to render a fairly simple kitchen. What should I do GPU settings wise and if this is my pc's ceiling, what should I upgrade?
Start by enabling the RTX rendering engine within V-Ray's settings: docs.chaos.com/display/VSKETCHUP/GPU+Rendering If things are still slow, use V-Ray Benchmark to see how your system rates relative to other hardware out there: www.chaos.com/vray/benchmark If your system rates highly, then you would want to take a look at your SketchUp model to see if it has an excessive polygon count or too many overly high resolution materials (or both).
I personally use a Mac, but that's partly out of the habit of having used a Mac for nearly 20 years. I also have a PC that I use both for teaching SketchUp, but also for times when I very specifically just need to have more horsepower for creating realistic renderings. If I had to choose just one of the two, and I knew I needed to do a lot of rendering, I might go with the PC. But since I'm not rendering all of the time, and have many other things I am accustomed to doing with my Mac, it remains my primary machine.
I am thinking about upgrading my laptop and get a MacBook Pro m3 pro 36gb. Do you think that it would be fine for SketchUp and vray rendering? Will i be able to get good quality results?
The Macbook Pro you mentioned will run SketchUp nicely, and you can certainly also create V-Ray for SketchUp renderings. A Mac won't create those renderings as fast as a PC with an NVIDIA GPU, but if you'd rather go for a Mac it will still be able to do a nice job, just somewhat more slowly.
That looks like it just meets the minimum requirements to run SketchUp - but you might want something a little more powerful if you need to work with larger files.
Thank you for the wonderful lecture! I'm worried about the configuration of my desktop PC. I want to reflect the material smoothly when "render with vray interactive" works. Do you know if the following configuration seems to be a problem? CPU Ryzen9 5950x 16core RAM 64GB GPU GeForce RTX3060Ti 12GB SSD 500GB M.2
Your computer looks like it should be able to create renderings quickly. When you use Interactive mode, things take longer to look "smooth". Try turning off Interactive and turning off Progressive - this will leave you in Bucket mode and the final result you get should look "smooth".
ohhh 😔😔😔I'm poor! I have a toshiba laptop from 2012. Hahaha imagine how I manage to make a render with skt + vray! I need jobs to buy a new one!... I'll keep crying until I stop turning on my poor machine. and Nice video! Thank you.
For SketchUp, single core performance is the main thing to look at. For AutoCAD, there are some tasks that are multi-threaded. So if the Ryzen is close enough in single core performance, I say go for that so that you optimize AutoCAD and you also open up the chance that you take advantage of other multi-threaded applications down the line.
Hi Alex, very informative video, I've just upgraded my PC and looking to upgrade my GPU. I mainly use Sketchup for interior designing. I've been noticing when I added more and more 3D from the 3D warehouse like couch, rug, bed, Etc , my viewport is getting laggy and stuttering. I'm leaning towards the RTX A4000 because of the 16gb VRAM and ECC, will this fix the stutter and laggy viewport? does Sketchup view port benefitted from ECC? or More VRAM? or do I just get the 3080/3090ti or maybe 4090? as far as I know, creating photo realistic rendering using Vray is all about CUDA cores. my Pc Spec : CPU : Ryzen 5 5600x Ram : 32GB GPU : RX580 8GB Thank you very much :)
The SketchUp lagging problem won't be fixed with a better GPU - it's likely due to a high polygon count which can be helped with a powerful CPU, but also is a limitation in SketchUp that you need to work around by keeping your polygon count lower. Send us a message to team@sketchupschool.com and we can discuss your situation further to try to help.
I've read that Sketch Up can't use Multi Core Rendering. So isn't it better to get an high end Intel since they perform better on Single Core Benchmarks?
Yes, SketchUp (and other 3D modeling software) can only take advantage of a single core, so you might as well just worry about getting the most powerful single core possible.

Hi, just watched your video, very informative thank you. However this seem woefully underpowered for running sketchup pro. I'm a garden designer and once I import a few plants into my models it becomes awfully slow. I want to stay with apple, what would your opinion be on an Apple studio M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine 32GB unified memory and 512GB SSD storage. Do you think this would work well for me? I'd really appreciate any pointer you could give me? I have work I need to get finished, but it's becoming impossbile with the iMac I have. Thanks .
I do think that the M1 Mac that you mentioned would perform faster. Note that you only need to worry about the CPU speed when it comes to how fast SketchUp runs as the GPU can't help speed up the types of operations SketchUp performs. If the M1 was to run any files slowly, that wouldn't be something that more horsepower would fix. That would be due to the polygon count of the plants in your model being too high for SketchUp to handle smoothly (regardless of computer).
@@SketchUpSchool Thanks for getting back to me, very kind of you. Yes it seems to be a problem when adding plants and so on out of the 3d warehouse, I then tried some from globe plants and these were even worse. If you are just running SketchUp, the 7900 is fine. You won't notice a difference in upgrading to the 7950. If you're also going to create photorealistic renderings, and you're looking to save money, the 7900 will perform closely enough on rendering tasks that it's still probably the better option. The 7950 will give you a performance boost where renderings happen a little faster, but we're talking in the range of 20-30% faster for certain things, not twice as fast. But if budget is not a concern, then you can always pay more if you want every performance gain you can find.

Hey, I have Microsoft surface Pro 7, will this be good enough to use autocad and SketchUp. I will not use this system for photorealistic rendering. Instead i will pull up the SketchUp model into digital sketching apps to render. Your inputs on this are appreciated 🙂
Based on reviews, it looks like this GPU will perform quite slowly for rendering (V-Ray or Lumion), although it should work fine for SketchUp alone. If you have a more powerful CPU, that could make up for some of the performance when it comes to rendering.
This Notebook Odyssey looks like a good option for your needs: www.samsung.com/us/computing/windows-laptops/notebook-odyssey/notebook-odyssey--9750h-rtx2060--np850xbc-x02us/
Samsung has some components like SSD, but most important components like CPU, GPU are not Samsungs, buy any kind of PC with enough CPU cores and 32+GB RAM.
You can add more than one GPU, just make sure that your CPU is powerful enough to take advantage of the two high-end GPUs if you decide to go that route.
You can run SketchUp with that GPU. It's when it comes to creating realistic renderings in a software like V-Ray for SketchUp that you will find it won't be as helpful as an NVIDIA GPU would be.

Thanks for your video. How about Layout SketchUp hardware? ( my english is not good).
Please send this question to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
How about Apple’s new M1 & M2 series for vray?
Those M1 and M2 chips can run V-Ray, but there are still aspects that can only run the fastest on a PC.
vray is faster in nvidia imo.
Should add in for Mac users you can use an external GPU to give you the boost! So there is an upgrade option here :)
Thanks for sharing!

@@SketchUpSchool Thanks Alex… you’re a legend..!! 👍🏻

Thank you!
You're welcome - and glad you liked the coffee cup! :)

Great video, thanks. A question for Sketchup, wondering which laptop is better to run Sketchup with Vray in between Samsung Book4 ultra with Nvidia 4070 and Macbook M3 Max 40 core GPU ? Any suggestion, please advise, thank you.
The Samsung with the NVIDIA GPU will be faster than a Mac due to the way that NVIDIA GPUs can accelerate render times.
Hey Alex, thank you for the video😉 actually I'm wondering how about mac book pro 2016 for vray ?
A 2016 Macbook Pro should be able to run V-Ray for SketchUp so long as it meets the minimum requirements listed here: docs.chaos.com/display/VSKETCHUP/System+Requirements
I’m looking at a Used Surface Pro 4 (older version)This video was helpful. Now I have to research which graphics card is included and if I can upgrade it later.
Glad the video was helpful!
dont buy it, surface is an ewaste, get a slim gaming laptop from lenovo thAT LAST LONGER.
Ни в коем случае не покупайте. Surface это красивая записная книжка, но он не подходит для 3D так как там слабое питание и энергоэффективные процессоры.. в общем слабый совсем..

Hi Alex, i am in the market for a new laptop and i am on a tight budget i have narrowed it down to 2 laptops one with a gtx 1650 and another with a rtx 3050 both are 4gb cards would like to know which one should i get as i would like to render my designs and if the 1650 is good enough to get those render its fine as well
The RTX 3050 will perform far better when it comes to creating photorealistic renderings.
ahh I see thanks for the reply man, appreciate it
When I try to export dwg linework, that when my pc gets slow and takes forever to export. I have a Ryzen 7 3800 8 core 3.60GHz + GTX 1660ti. + 32gb ram.
When it comes to exporting linework, I'm not sure that an upgraded CPU would make that much of a difference.
Start by enabling the RTX rendering engine within V-Ray's settings: docs.chaos.com/display/VSKETCHUP/GPU+Rendering
If things are still slow, use V-Ray Benchmark to see how your system rates relative to other hardware out there: www.chaos.com/vray/benchmark
If your system rates highly, then you would want to take a look at your SketchUp model to see if it has an excessive polygon count or too many overly high resolution materials (or both).
Hey Alex, great video as always. Just a quick questions as I can't decide between Mac and PC. Which do you use personally for SketchUp? Thanks
What about the specifications of this laptop?! HP ELITEBOOK 820 " CORE 17 | 8GB RAM | 500GB | TOUCH SCREEN | 12.5INCH | DUBAI | DAMMAANAD LEH
That looks like it just meets the minimum requirements to run SketchUp - but you might want something a little more powerful if you need to work with larger files.
Can I use my Sketchup pro on multiple devices eg... my laptop and desktop
Yes, you can!
Thank you for the wonderful lecture!
I'm worried about the configuration of my desktop PC.
I want to reflect the material smoothly when "render with vray interactive" works. Do you know if the following configuration seems to be a problem?
CPU Ryzen9 5950x 16core
RAM 64GB
GPU GeForce RTX3060Ti 12GB
SSD 500GB M.2
Your computer looks like it should be able to create renderings quickly. When you use Interactive mode, things take longer to look "smooth". Try turning off Interactive and turning off Progressive - this will leave you in Bucket mode and the final result you get should look "smooth".
ohhh 😔😔😔I'm poor! I have a toshiba laptop from 2012. Hahaha imagine how I manage to make a render with skt + vray! I need jobs to buy a new one!... I'll keep crying until I stop turning on my poor machine.
and Nice video! Thank you.
You're welcome!
does it has graphics card?
Should I go for the Intel i5 13600k which has better single core performance than a Ryzen 9 5900x ? I will mainly use it for sketchup and autocad.
I'm leaning towards the RTX A4000 because of the 16gb VRAM and ECC, will this fix the stutter and laggy viewport? does Sketchup view port benefitted from ECC? or More VRAM?
or do I just get the 3080/3090ti or maybe 4090?
as far as I know, creating photo realistic rendering using Vray is all about CUDA cores.
my Pc Spec :
CPU : Ryzen 5 5600x
Ram : 32GB
GPU : RX580 8GB
Thank you very much :)
Yes, SketchUp (and other 3D modeling software) can only take advantage of a single core, so you might as well just worry about getting the most powerful single core possible.
fantastic video thanks for it.
You're welcome! Glad you liked it!
Will Macbook Air M1 2020 work with sketchup and vray?
Yes, it will run both of those programs.
awesome informative video Alex! It really is helpful and informative. From your own suggestion, I am a coming college student, would you recommend the baseline mac studio for a less expensive mac setup?
The baseline mac studio comes with Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, and 32 gb of unified memory. Thanks in advance! :)
The Mac Studio you mentioned sounds like it would work great!

Does vram memory stack up using nvlink in Vray? im using a 3090 with 24 gb, so if i added another 3090 do i have 48 gb of vram? One thing to note also that you missed out on this video thats worth mentioning is that even if you have the latest rtx card like the 3080 with a 10 gb or 12 gb of vram if you max out the vram with a scene that has alot of assets it eats up your vram and can cause significant impact on your renders times also

Hi, just watched your video, very informative thank you. I'm still a little in the dark in regards to what machine to go for, I currently have 2017 iMac 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, Radeon Pro 570 4 GB.16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4. However this seem woefully underpowered for running sketchup pro. I'm a garden designer and once I import a few plants into my models it becomes awfully slow. I want to stay with apple, what would your opinion be on an Apple studio M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
32GB unified memory and 512GB SSD storage. Do you think this would work well for me? I'd really appreciate any pointer you could give me? I have work I need to get finished, but it's becoming impossbile with the iMac I have. Thanks
.
(Should of gone for the low polly, I just thought it was the ones out of the warehouse creating the problem).
What would you recommend as an apple purchase (I won't of course hold you to, it I'm just looking for guidance).
