SCV's approach is so interesting to me. It looks like Paul doesn't really govern technique, like at all, he just lets everyone do what's comfortable for them. I think it's cool to see a line that just cares about the music, not all this superficial appearance crap.
Ethan S-D Even when you audition, there's no packet. They ask you for the excersizes that you personally use. 👍
yeah I saw that on their website during audition season, I thought that must be so stressful not knowing exactly what to prepare LOL (especially going in auditioning for the best drumline in the world)
John Adams that’s true. It should definitely be enforced by lower level corps, but these guys are the best in the world, I think they’ve come into their own enough as players to know what they’re doing. I do agree that it is important for those wanting to get to the top
I think Paul prioritizes quality of sound above technique. Obviously their techniques have to be uniform to a degree, but that is lower on the totem pole

SCV does the job that a line complimenting the band should do. Fact is nobody is close to judge your hands at Dayton. The sound you’re producing is what needs to be GODLY. SCV knows that and they’ve cracked the code on producing a true uniform SOUND. Do their hands look the best? Never. Is their uniform beautiful and their carriers nice to look at? Not in the slightest. But as a line, hands down, they produce THE BEST sound of every drumline every year in DCI. Coats definitely chases their tail with the amount of swagger they pull off. And nobody blasts notes like Boston. But SCV is the only line to consistently do the drumlines job THE BEST.
Love that they still use traditional SCV visuals, even after all the changes. Jonez!

man... that cymbal section is pure ninja! Those dudes walk in lock-step everywhere w/ each other -- it's impressive to see how they carry themselves -- all business!! (I was at Rose Bowl & Riverside CC shows... I didn't see any of them smile once!)

DolphinsWIthIgloos not just her though, any time there’s a girl in a World Class drum line, the comments are full of comments about that girl. just annoying and off putting for girls who just want to drum like everyone else
DolphinsWIthIgloos I genuinely don’t mean this in a rude way but my comment said it turns girls off from getting involved. so the people who haven’t gotten the passion for it yet don’t want to do it because they see that their presence would be accompanied by people catcalling them and that gets annoying.
Any comment about her in this thread is at best asking for her name, but mostly cat calling and demeaning language. Maybe she would enjoy internet comments if some of them were about her relevant passion, being an amazing snare drummer, and not just being a girl.

Man this quality is awesome. You can hear one, like just one snare, is doing something different. I can't even tell what it is at 2:06 ... Like it almost sounds like a super soft buzzroll at the edge or something. It's obviously not that, but that's what it sounds like.

I like how whenever SCV reuses something, it's a cool throwback. But when BD does it, it's lazy. Granted, BD does it WAAAAYYY more but people need to stop viewing DCI from such a hypocritical lens. Understand that Vanguard isn't perfect. Neither is BD. Like at all.
Agreed. I loved when Rennick used motifs from 06 and 07 in his writing for this group. Plus, when you hear them play, you can't help but know that it's that signature Rennick writing. Timeless.
