  • When Hanneke Boon, Polynesian Wooden Double Canoe Designer and Head of James Wharram Designs, invited us to meet her in Southern Portugal to experience living at anchor on her flagship Spirit of Gaia, how could we refuse? We loaded up the car and drove across four climate regions to hop aboard Gaia and learn all we can about this minimalist traditional boat ahead of our own classic Wharram wooden boat build.
Our boat will be a tad smaller: a 41ft Wharram Classic Narai Mk IV (learn more on our website: www.voyagevirage.com). This will become our home and Floating Stories Lab, where we merge science, art and storytelling whilst voyaging the world.
Collaborating with leading scientists on the impact of end-of-life fiberglass (GRP) boats on oysters and other marine species, we are curious in exploring bio composite alternatives to GRP and bridging the gap between science and policy.

I'm in my 50's with nothing and no one and lost everything in a fire. I'm thinking of something like this to live aboard. I'd love to build something like Ontong Java...but I don't even know where to begin or how to go about find any kind of community to plug into. Housing and land is insane these days and I've always loved the idea of having my own ship or floating island....maybe someday.

Ontong Java is a magnificent boat. But you don’t necessarily need something so big. I recommend joining the Wharram FB group and subscribing to their website, reading articles, or do what we did first and buy their design book online which gives you an overview of the philosophy, building techniques and boat designs. Then you can be better informed and choose a design you might like to build yourself. Alternatively, there are Wharrams for sale to buy secondhand.

@@voyagevirage I really loathe Facebook...but i'll consider it for the community.

@@velvetvideo Have a look at Wildlings Sailing. He's doing up a 42ft Wharram. IMO that's a better size for one or two people.

Would there happen to be a boat tour of this boat? The style has me curious. Thank you.

We will have to film one next time we visit, but you can go on the Wharram website and look at the Pahi 63, which is the design of Gaia.
