"The Tragedy of the Commons but they made it cute." 🤣
@Eddard Tyrsson oh God that explains it how the small hats made money through exploiting the nature that protected them cute
Eddard Tyrosson, the book is about unconditional love. Too bad you can't understand that.
It's actually not the tragedy of the commons. There's only one individual interacting with the tree. Or is this saying that the tree is somehow part of the collective community? The point of the giving tree was that the "boy" had taken everything he could and more from the tree to go about and live his life. This is mirrored on the other side by the tree, which happily gave everything it could to the boy. It's supposed to be a story that both the child listening to the book and the parent reading the book to their child can appreciate (and all walks of life in between).
You're all of course welcome to take from it what you will, but I'd argue you missed Shel's point.
@Eddard Tyrsson "So we can all go and log an entire forest, because we learned from the giving tree the unconditional love of trees. "
Out of all the widely varied interpretations of this work expressed throughout the decades, exactly zero humans have ever interpreted it this way. Feel free to provide evidence to the contrary.
"If you don't see that it was small scale tragedy of the commons, you're missing the bigger picture."
If you're unaware of a large variety of different, equally valid interpretations of The Giving Tree that exist alongside your own, you have some reading to do before you decide that everyone else's opinion is objectively false.
@Eddard Tyrsson "I suppose if your entitled to yours, I'm entitled to mine."
Mine has supporting evidence, but you do you.
" I suppose I do firmly feel the way I do that I think it's objectively bad and I can't understand for the life of me why anyone thinks that story is any fucking good,"
If you lack understanding, what makes you think your opinion is objective?
"but in no way am I actually saying you're wrong for liking it."
Careful, making assumptions in the absence of evidence is habit-forming.
"But yeah, I think this book and Shel Silverstein as an author are as overrated as 50 shades and Twilight"
Probably because you've never read The Devil and Billy Markham.
