The reason that FWD race cars have wings is because a lot of them have narrower tires at the back, or are just generally set up to turn in aggressively, to overcome the inherent understeer. Saying that front wheel drive cars don’t need rear wings is like saying rear engined cars don’t need front splitters.
I knew a guy who was tracking his Integra Type R. He was wondering about the factory wing on it, and was thinking "hell nah theres no way this actually does anything" He took it off, and went out for a session. He said the car was SO MUCH less stable through the corners. He came back in and immediately put it back on.
The reason Louvres exist on mid engined cars is for cooling, the Miura originally had a glass engine cover but it would steam up and the engine would overheat too. They solved this issue by creating slats to replace the rear window, not only helping with cooling but making it easier to see out the rear. It’ll be the same with other mid engine cars that have them, for engine cooling purposes while keeping visibility

Yeah I heard wings do help even in cars with relatively low horsepower. Apparently some wings gives you downforce at like 50 if you adjust them properly. Sometimes those kinds of cars outperform supercars in a very narrow track so it`s definitely worth it
Speeking of roof spoilers... This reminds me of the awesome Ford Escort RS Cosworth, which was way beyond its time in 1992. I loved to own one and still love it, even when I don't have one now. Just a beautiful car and great aero design.
Nice video, I’ve been raging about this for a while! :) As a heads up, the roof spoiler at 9:21 is functional (ish). Note how unlikely the others, this one follows the contours of the roof and is shaped like an aeroplane wing (generating arguably a little lift). Like ‘Fox ears’ on single seat race cars (eg formula student cars) that go behind the front wing to redirect airflow down into the radiators (like lift), this redirects air down under the rear wing, generating more downforce than the lift it produces. However it’s uncommon as VGs often do the same job. :)
I thought that roof spoilers on sedans were used to kind of "extend" the roof and direct the air to the wing, specifically the giant aftermarket wings, because they are big enough to "recieve" the air and help with the needed downforce. But this is actually what VGs do
1) According to Lamborghini, They are vents for the engine cooling since not closing that up will help the hot air escape easily...... 2) The more downforce meant more corner grip and hence speed. So, you don't need to slow down as much as the other cars and more corner exit speed....... 60-80 is easier than 40-80................ 3) Just like the top part and is passes through it too(which most people forgot). Making it flat/easier for air to flow will also increase the downforce. It is easy and one of the first thing to do if you're modifying your car (for racing and not for show/rice). Not a long time follower. Just stumbled upon one the other day............and love your videos............... Please do a video about wheels (sizes and width) and the misconceptions regarding it......

Great video. Noticed that thing though... 9:20 some roof spoilers like the OEM one from the 2006 WRX STI or the E9 BMW Batmobile have roof spoilers that are angled up instead of down. With this type of setup, it forces the air to follow the curvature of the glass and reducing drag.
Still watching so maybe you will touch on it; but I always thought it’s interesting that the Audi TT needed a spoiler installed for everyday safety, not just racing. It’s shape is so similar to an air foil it initially generated so much unintended lift. It needed some kind of trip wire to separate the laminar flow. Anyway…cool video. Gave you a like.
Finally a vid I can use to prove my friends my MR-S actually needs a wing for Autocross circuits even if it only has 300hp. My pal in his 350z has 400hp and started drifting through a transition. because lack of downforce
if you need down force at slow speed you have to basically go full tilt on the aero package to find a way to still create the amounts of grip you need also at slow speed the aero efficiency is less important with efficiency i mean that it doesn't matter if the aero package creates lots of drag at higher speeds as you aren't expecting to reach that speed there is a reason why in racing there always has to be a balance between high attack angles and enough aero for the corners and still having low enough drag for the straights if you don't have high enough straights for drag to hurt you lap time more than you gain in the corners then a more aggressive aero package might help
There's a 4th reason for louvers, the Aventador sets open directly into the engine bay and act as an exit for high speed and high temperature air after the side intakes funnel it through there
Roof spoilers and normal spoilers can be useful if done correctly. Like on the 06 sti for an ex. there is a roof spoiler but it has a space for the air to flow under it to make the air go under its spoiler. Its not something that makes the air go over it but under it.
Vortex generators actually increase turbulence but in a good way. They use the turbulence created by the vortex to delaying flow separation (air detaching from the body of the car, increasing drag). This also improves airflow over spoilers.
6:13 i guess for really performance based cars a roof spoiler could have some effect by driving all the air into the wing mounted at the back. the test showed a roof spoiler and a trunk spoiler, but not a roof spoiler and a wing, looking at the way the air moves i'm pretty sure that it would be beneficial for downforce if you had the right roof spoiler to feed more air onto that rear wing to possibly generate more downforce. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong though, i don't have a degree and i don't know everything. just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents
There are a few notable exceptions to the idea that a roof spoiler in combination with a rear spoiler is bad. The Ford Escort Cosworth as designed by Frank Stephenson was intended to have two spoilers (the finance department killed the idea before it hit the rally track), one that went straight back from the roof and another below it. This design did generate more downforce than either of the spoilers on their own. However, these looked pretty different to what most people are sticking onto their cars.
I have louvers but the Evora 400 is mid engine and the engine air goes right out the open louvers. I switched from glass to louvers and the engine bay is noticeably cooler after aggressive driving.
The second argument is supported by F1. Just look at the setups they race at Monaco (A short, narrow and slow track) and Monza (A long, wide and fast track). At Monaco they use the High Downforce Aero Kit, and at Monza they use the Low Drag Aero Kit.
vortex generators are like those little water spouts on the edge of pools with high dives that disrupt the placement of the water, reducing drag, and therefore making entry smoother as it prevents the molecules from aligning in such a way that would make hitting the water like running into a wall. in this case, it breaks up airflow to reduce turbulence and therefore drag.
I like everything about the "Weebvette" except the name and the anime on the side But that's just my opinion. Do whatever you want to your car. If you like anime that much that you put it on your car more power to you, my man😎
As to spoilers and wings, there are cars that are less stable at upper highway/tollroad speeds or the rear will begin to lift at a given speed. On roof wings, as an example, look at the Shelby Lancer. I owned one and had an incident where the roof wing tore off do to corroded hardware at 140+.
Thanks for starting with that one. I don't know where people got the idea that just because the wheels are not getting power, that they don't need downforce..... Do you want to go around a corner with your back tires having no traction?
I agree of course but you didn’t specifically address what I think is the number one reason why some people don’t think wings on FWD cars are unimportant. That is a wing will add a ton of downforce over the rear but you need the most grip at the front since that’s where the power and turning are. Downforce doesn’t work in isolation and more in the back will increase the downforce over the entire car in general.
I never heard of a “vortex generators” until you. On another one of your videos. I had seen them before, but had no idea what they are. But based on your other video, I did a bit of research and ordered a set, not received yet. Very inexpensive mod.
Since you went to Lanier Motorplex I guess i'll mention downforce in oval racing. On short tracks like Lanier it's absolutely necessary for maximum speeds, look at Outlaw Late Models or modifieds.
louvers make sense on a car that has a recessed rear window, like the DeLorean, 68-70 Charger, DeTomaso Pantera, etc. Because the louvers actually try to keep the airflow attached to the body rather than have it seperate because of the window. Of course, the best solution is to have a flush rear window in the first place (like what Dodge did with the Charger Daytona) but louvers can help with that without the need of changing the entire glass design.
Its hilarious that some car people say that aesthetics and looks, over performance, are “rice” but they sure want a good looking pair of shoes, girlfriend/boyfriend etc.
Most drag racers still don't use wings just because they do create drag, so if they do need a little bit extra grip in the back they just run just a spoiler. The only exception to the rule is top fuel drag racers, but it's mostly because there is literally nothing to the cars and they're going 4 second quarter miles at 300 mph.
Basically, you *generally* don’t need a wing for grip when you’re going straight, you need it for lateral grip when you’re turning. Yes, you keep some power on when you’re in a corner to keep the speed up as well as preventing too much lift off oversteer, but a car needs both front downforce and rear downforce, no matter if it’s FWD, RWD, AWD, front engine or rear engine. I believe that FWD cars actually need rear downforce more than RWD cars as the rear ends of FWD cars are very light under braking and in corners. If a FWD car had a lot of front downforce and no rear downforce it would be over steering a ton around every corner. If a RWD car had a lot of rear downforce and no front downforce it would under steer around every corner. The F/R downforce balance would be different for different drivetrains though. For all types of cars you generally need fairly balanced downforce balance with a little more on the front, and the most amount of downforce possible for that track (ie. enough to be fast enough through the corners that the lack of straight acceleration doesn’t matter and you end up with a lower lap time for that track).
The window louvers can help smooth out aero if they’re on a vehicle with an aggressive slope. If they’re designed well that can change the angle of the roof line and smooth out the air to a spoiler which could allow you to run a smaller spoiler or a lower wing. Still they shouldn’t be the first mod unless you want privacy
For the first misconception there is a old video of a ek9 going around a track with a wing and then without and without it is was drifting while with it is was staying planted
There’s a reason why F1 cars have a more complex aero setup for a slow track like Monaco than a setup for a track like Monza. The tighter the corners and the slower the track the more downforce you need in order to be able to maintain pace.
does the top mounted exhaust on the 600lt and 918 send air at the wing, creating more downforce? bc that would be a good design idea if it actually works.
Hey so , can you make a video on first time car buyers ? I think it would be an interesting topic ... like "5 types of first types of first time buyers" or "stupid things car salesmen tell first time car buyers" etc
i would say that on low speed tracks I would instal a antirollbar and a good set of coilovers to prevent body roll because to me that seems to be the main problem
6:59 Cool Bladed, but do you know how stupid a ducktail or anything other than a roofspoiler looks on an LS400?? If I were to get a Chaser _maybe_ I could pull off a small tail spoiler, but I need that boat life baby
I have a roof wing on my daily driven never tracked WRX because I like how it looks. But you also won't catch me at the local car meet trying to defend it from an areo standpoint, so I think I'm okay.
Wait for the roof spoiler my buddies STI has a roof spoiler as well as the rally wing. Does that just do less even in a rally scenario? He does rally it occasionally
Tbh for awhile I just thought that FWD cars didn't benefit from wings as much as RWD because of where the downforce was going. I realized that it makes a pretty significant difference when I found a video online where a pro japanese racer took the same corner twice at similar speeds, one with and without without the wing in a FWD car. It made a visible difference. I'm a BMW boi, so I'm much more used to RWD and AWD (Drove an explorer with 4x4 before my bimmer) so I never had much experience to draw on with FWD. So I just didn't know because I lacked the knowledge. Once I saw that video tho, I believed before was way off.
aero is important on pretty much every vehicle even motorcycles have downforce generating aero on them so that bois can stick to the track at high speed

For the first misconception there is a old video of a ek9 going around a track with a wing and then without and without it is was drifting while with it is was staying planted
how can we forget the 12 years old wo says that "SuPrA cOmEs WiTh 1200 Hp"
0:36 I think the gremlin is quite cute
There’s a reason why F1 cars have a more complex aero setup for a slow track like Monaco than a setup for a track like Monza. The tighter the corners and the slower the track the more downforce you need in order to be able to maintain pace.
This man should be our designer teacher.
I like these videos like the vlogs, even if there for the algarithum
I came for KNOLAGE.
That miata at 4:19 is scaring me.
You know vortex generators do something when you know they are commonly used on the wings of aircraft
does the top mounted exhaust on the 600lt and 918 send air at the wing, creating more downforce? bc that would be a good design idea if it actually works.
Hey so , can you make a video on first time car buyers ?
I think it would be an interesting topic ... like "5 types of first types of first time buyers"
or "stupid things car salesmen tell first time car buyers" etc
i would say that on low speed tracks I would instal a antirollbar and a good set of coilovers to prevent body roll because to me that seems to be the main problem
Just wanted to say that it makes me smile when I see you commenting on genshin vids.
Thanks for sharing ur knowledge with us blad
6:59 Cool Bladed, but do you know how stupid a ducktail or anything other than a roofspoiler looks on an LS400??
If I were to get a Chaser _maybe_ I could pull off a small tail spoiler, but I need that boat life baby
I can't wait to ride up there to see you in person. I'm subscribing
I have a roof wing on my daily driven never tracked WRX because I like how it looks. But you also won't catch me at the local car meet trying to defend it from an areo standpoint, so I think I'm okay.
Three vlogs are worth it despite hating anime
6:37 THAAANK YOU! I'm sick of being called a 12 year old ricer.
The only car exempt from roof spoilers are subarus. The spoiler is angled in such a way to push the air down to the wing
Uploading more? My man 🔥
Hey man I am loving these videos
saying 'FWD cars don't need wings' is like saying 'organizms don't need energy to live'
If you already have a spoiler mounted on the trunk the thing you wanna put is probably vortex generator
top 10 best anime comebacks ever!!!
Wait for the roof spoiler my buddies STI has a roof spoiler as well as the rally wing. Does that just do less even in a rally scenario? He does rally it occasionally
cons of having louvers: they dont help your aero
pros of having louvers: they dont hurt your aero
Tbh, it's been so long since YT recommended me any of your video's I forgot I was subbed to you. Guess I'll have to go to your page myself.
Except in FWD autocross where you need to 3-wheel around every turn just to not understeer lmao
aero is important on pretty much every vehicle even motorcycles have downforce generating aero on them so that bois can stick to the track at high speed
That professional ricer meme had me laughing so hard I cough up my chikfila waffle fries
