A suggestion on "new note" CMD+N if I may. Don't use it. Yep, that's right.
To create a new note use CMD+O (open a note) instead, start typing the name and you will see if there is already an existing note with this name. And if not - hit Enter and there you have it, a new note created.
Think about it: by starting a new note using CMD+O you will never create a duplicate note name.
You're welcome.
Haha! This is a best practice I can rally behind, especially as a person's note library grows. Thanks for sharing!
ty dude.
this is a pretty awesome thought!
But then I won't get that depressed feeling when I find I have three notes on the same subject like in Evernote:/
Really a great suggestion.
The Windows Versions:
1. Open link (ctrl + click)
2. Toggle edit/preview (ctrl + e)
3. Open Quick Switcher (ctrl + o)
4. Search (ctrl + shift + f)
5. Back (ctrl + alt + Left Arrow)
6. Forward (ctrl + alt + Right Arrow)
7. New Note (ctrl + n)
8. Open note in new window (ctrl + click on note)
god bless you
Thanks!
Diosito te bendiga hoy mañana y siempre! Muchas gracias
I should have checked the comments before i watched this vid and typed everything up manually ... 😫
Thank you, valuable knowledge for me
I've never seen somebody so interested and joyful about hotkeys
I've tried to get into Obsidian but failed miserably until I saw your playlist. I'm finally starting to see the big picture and it took your down-to-earth, truly beginner friendly approach--and style--to get me there. Thank you so much!
Welcome aboard!
Same as me, here in Brazil.
If you are on Windows, use alt-left arrow or alt-right arrow to quickly jump to start/end of line without moving your hands to home/end keys (tested on Obsidian v0.11.0). That's the key combination I loved on MacOS and miss on Windows whilst editing any document/code.
Nice share!
Need you to know that I read this comment, immediately tried it, and I've been bouncing from the start and end of sentences for a solid minute.. This feels life changing.. i never knew this hotkey existed.. amazing
Your series on Obsidian is a true gift. Thanks a lot for the time and effort.
If you are in windows 10 and when you use shortcut key ctrl+alt+left/right your orientation is changing then just do this-
Ctrl+alt+f12
Then go to option and support
Then you can see there are those hotkeys
rotate to 0 degrees
rotate to 90 degrees
rotate to 180 degrees
rotate to 270 degrees
just change them by simply clicking below the them where a box is,
and then
Type ctrl+alt+num8 for first box
Type ctrl+alt+num4 for second box
Type ctrl+alt+num2 for third box
Type ctrl+alt+num6 for forth box
And remember these shortcuts and then just click apply in bottom right and then just close that software and now you can use these shortcuts of obsidian.
You can also change obsidian shortcut keys just by simply going to settings then hotkeys and then search forward and change it according to your comfort
And then save it and do the same for back by just again searching back and changing it.
What I really like is opening the left and right side panel, I use ctrl + shit + h and L to open the them, It's great to use hotkeys!
Great series! Basic and incredibly useful to get me up and started on my new favorite program, Obsidian! Thanks for the info.
Great to hear!
I am considering Obsidian. You have made it less frightening.

I wish there was a series on suggestions for standing up your own first vault.
If you press cmd in mac and hover over any of the notes you can get a quick preview of the note. Just starting out with the app but seems like a good hotkey to have.
I just started law school and some of my classes are very difficult for this precise reason. We learn so many concepts and it's hard to have a macro sense of how everything connects. Someone suggested to me that I try the app Obsidian and I downloaded it and saw how useful the graph view could potentially be for reviewing my notes. But, the app itself was intimidating and it seems like there is such a huge learning curve. I have my final exams coming up and the thought of adding learning an entire new program onto my plate of things I need to learn/study was overwhelming. So these videos have not only put me at ease regarding using Obsidian, they've actually made me SUPER excited at the thought of learning this new program. I can't wait to see how my notes turn out. And I can't wait to see what my notes will look like next semester since I'll be able to use Obsidian from the very beginning (vs finding out about it more than halfway through the first semester). Anyways, thank you SOOO much for these videos!
I am more excited about this app than I have been about an app in a while. I'll be spending some time on this. Your vids are giving me an excellent launchpad to get started. Thanks for putting in the time. I know how much work creating a video can be.
Thanks! Just learning Obsidian -- you are making it work for me! And I'm OLD!!!
Great to hear! Let us know how it's working for you so far.
I set the toggle left and right "coloums" to ctrl-alt-left and ctrl-alt-right for the left and right coloumn respectively. Useful for me because I often dont use the right coloumn and so I can use that space, but it allowes me to quickly get it back if I need it.
Opening the Command Palette (ctl + p) is my favourite. One hotkey to access them all.
in order to make "back" and "forward" navigation easier, I changed the hotkeys to shift+w and shift+e, respectively. They're not mapped to anything and the left hand barely has to move. Not that it's really neccessary, but "w" could be thought of as "wegfallen" which means cancelled which could be rephrased as BACK out, and "e" as "eingehen" which means, go into, basically a FORWARD motion. English east and west didn't really work for me because the day starts in the east and moves forward to the west.
Obsidian is a game changer, no less. Nick - you're the man. Thank you for these informative gems!
Thanks George, I appreciate that!
Just wanted to add my voice to the LOUD chorus of thank yous for the clarity and thoughtfulness of these videos!
Instead of ctrl + click, I think many will prefer the alternative that doesn't involve using the mouse: alt + enter.
oh okay, good to know for non-mouse users
Great!!! Thanks
Please keep background music low. I am here to learn from you and with my hearing the music is a challenge. Also, great respect and thanks for what you are teaching me👍
Great 6th series. You taught us how to organize with links and tags and now how to navigate it fast. Thanks again.
You're very welcome!
Hi Nick, I'm new to Obsidian and I've watched quite a few content creator's videos on UA-cam about the basics of Obsidian and how they use it, but yours finally helped me grasp Obsidian and start using it. You explain things so clearly and simply which I really appreciate. Thank you so much! Best, Elle
I got really addicted to obsidian by watching all these videos, much appreciated ❤️
I feel like I'd be using cmd-O a lot when using Obsidian. Thank you!
Something must have been changed in the time between when you recorded this and now, because CMD-f now works without the shift key. That's a very powerful one to know in any app. I use search for lots of different things! I'm enjoying the video tutorials and really appreciating them.
In messing around in Settings > Hotkeys, it looks like ctrl + f is to "search current file," and ctrl + shift + f is to "search in all files."
Nice tutorial, Nick!
Thanks for this powerful hotkeys.
Can't wait to try and use it properly during my creative thinking process.
^^
If you want to quickly make text bold (that wasn't bold before), you can select the text and press cmd+b (probably ctrl+b on windows)
Great tip - thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this series of videos!
These videos are love manifested in a digital form. Thank you Nick.
thank you so much for these videos, it has really helped me get over the fear of starting to use a new program
Great to hear!
Loving the pace and length of these beginner videos…… please continue! 🥰
Thank you for this. I downloaded Obsidian a couple of days ago and proved its value to me. You are right: these hot keys take fluency in the app to a new level.
I love hotkeys!
Man, thank you a lot. You have a real teacher tallent and incredible charisma. Good luck!
Many thanks for a great session so far. Easy to follow and very practical.
Thank you for the videos. I didn't know where to start with Obsidian and these are perfect!
You've sold me on obsidian!
Nice!
These videos have been extremely helpful. I can't wait to start using Obsidian more frequently.
thank you so much for making these videos really. I really appreciate every single detail from how you present to the aesthetics to the background music. really superb
This is a very useful tutorial 🔥
i have learned so much about obsidian , thanks making this video!
Your videos are simply incredible. I've discovered this program a few days ago and decided to use it for my research. Your tutorials are simple yet in depth. Love them.
Glad I could help!
I've pretty much never used hotkeys before this! Now I keep going through the settings panel to see all of them. :D This is pretty fun, so thank you!
Really enjoy your lightness to your videos, down to earth, get to the heart of the matter, and there is a smooth logical flow (not all over the map). Thank you for your passion, time, and expertise, so very appreciated.
Really great videos and host ! Thank you !
I'm eating up your playlist man, awesome ! thank you.
Currently using Obsidian exclusively on my iPhone because I don’t have the ability to install this on my Mac just yet. Really stoked to get into the practice of using Obsidian to process/plan art projects, as well as for going back to school and just generally keeping track of things on my mind.
It's awesome you're diving into Obsidian on your iPhone for art, school, and more! Once you get it on your Mac, you'll unlock even more potential. Let us know how it goes!
👍🙏Thanks Nick. The series is a gem. You're a gem. God bless
Love the way you've done the timestamps here. Thank you for your videos !
Glad you like them! It takes extra effort, but it's kinda awesome
All the videos are just phenomenal. You are a genius Nick.
Great job on the videos really great presentation and very easy to follow. Recently found the the slip-box method and always played with mind maps but found them too limiting. I found obsidian and your videos and as someone one who is a guy and never reads a manual i watched all of your basic intro videos because i intend to learn and use the software since i believe it will help to keep digital notecards and ideas in one spot and especially linked together. Very similar to "The Brain" but less intense once the basics are explained. Thank you!
can you explain more the difference between open quick switcher and search? this series has been really helpful, thank you!!
You're welcome, glad it has been helpful. The open quick switcher lets you rapidly move between notes by typing the name or the alias of a particular note. Meanwhile the search function find specific text across all the notes in your vault for a more detailed retrieval of information.
You explain things so easily! Honestly I’ve been frustrated hopping around different obsidian tutorials on UA-cam but some of the jargon and level of expertise of the presenter left me feeling frozen out. You make obsidian easy to understand for someone like me who doesn’t have a tech background, so thank you so much!
I am getting more and more excited to start my own journey with Obsidian thanks to your PERFECT tutorials :)))
Thank you so much for the videos, this really helped to dive into this app!
You're very welcome!
Thanks for all your tips & tricks :)
Thanks a lot very help for beginners!!
This is an incredibly helpful video for those of us who are new to Obsidian. Thank you for taking the time to make this and all the other Obsidian videos. The program has more features than I had ever imagined, so I appreciate videos like yours where basics are explained in detail with great examples. Cheers!
Very easy series to follow through. Preciate what you're doing man
Glad you like them!
Thanks a lot! Incredible serie of videos... at last I will keep my notes safe, and not forget all of them
Excellent!

Glad you like them!
I'm a new subscriber, your lessons are awesome and very easy to follow along. Thank you!
Thanks for subbing!
So far, the best tutorial for beginners. This playlist made me choose obsidian over roam or logseq.
OMG I am truly amazed at the effort and hard work that you guys put on to demonstrate these hotkeys, which is the reason why Obsidian is so functional in such an effective way! Just a lot of love and respect to you guys!!!
This is changing my life!! Fabulous!!
Life-changer, woohoo!
Love the way you explain..
I have just learnt this app. It is amazing. Videos are well-done to learn this powerful app. Thanks...
Thanks a lot for the video series. I use a few hotkeys already and I'm wondering if there are hotkeys to focus on the note's title. If you happen to know, I really would use it.
- One of the hotkeys I use a lot is “Toggle pin”, which is very useful when you have several notes open and want to keep a specific note on screen.
- “Focus on panes” (above, below, left and right) is also very handy.
You can customize both hotkeys to your preferred style.
- Very basic, but “command-B” and “command-I” work just as in text editors for bold and italic text. I find them easier to use.
Looking forward for the next videos, cheers.
Ah yes, I probably should have included Bold and Italics. Good catch.
I like your "toggle pin" hotkey. I should try to incorporate that.
Thanks for the share!

Thank you, I'm loving your series. I'm a new Obsidian user after reading How To Take Smart Notes.
Great to hear!

Great to hear!
Thank you! Your vids are amazing!
thank you!
Awesome guide
great series. I'm changing from notion to obsidian and your videos got me into it just as I needed. cheers.
Glad to help
I am going to use obsidian personally. Thanks for introducing me this awesome application.
thank you so much!!
Thanks for the video. I had no idea about the toggle edit/preview key. That one makes a lot of sense and will be super helpful. I think at least here in the comments it is worth noting that most things can be set as hotkeys in the settings menu. My favorite hotkey is a custom one for "insert template" (I use ctrl + shift + i). Also helpful is Ctrl + P, which is the command window.
Ooo, I should customized the "insert template" hotkey! Thanks for sharing.
Ctrl-shift-i opens DevTools like in a browser in Obsidian v0.11.0
@@psvpl yeah, I've since changed it.
Really useful tutorials - thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you once again
love what you're doing. Bravo
