You know, I was led to believe that this movie was supposed to be this really feminist-forward, independent film starring Jennifer Beals, and I didnt watch it until last year (I'm in my 40s, lol). Well, I watched it with my copilot and I was so peeved... I couldn't even think of this through an 80's lens... So disappointed. I do love this video, tho! I totally see the lez subtext, right down to the bike riding...Alex and Jeanie are TOTALLY young Bette and Tina! (PS I, too, have a ridiculously deep infatuation with JB... )

She was nothing like Alex or Jennifer Beals (of course not) & had her cats declawed for furniture. That wasn't going to work. Have you seen JB in Devil in a Blue Dress? It's based on the novel by Walter Mosley. Her character has a bit of Bette Porter vibes in the movie.
I’ve actually never seen that movie and didn’t know about the subtext, now i’m way more interested (I live for subtext). Is the screentime of the “girlfriend” significant or is it more of a minor role ?
