"So let's get started by their broken sign right here." 🤣 🤣! Priceless!
Here is a little history of the town clock in Maxton. "The Patterson Building, named for the builder, housed the Bank of Robeson. The clock was added in 1911 through a public donation drive a year after the building’s construction. When the Depression hit, the bank failed. Over time the structure housed a branch of the U.S. Postal Service, a laundry, and business offices."
I remember when it used to be a laundromat.
Maxton Supply used to sell everything from hardware to farming supplies such as seeds for planting produce and vegetables.
Thanks, I love hearing about the history of these old buildings.
Many years ago now, I visited the Maxton area and when I found the Maxton Airport I was just in awe. I think I read that this extremely long runway was planned for overflow from Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty), maybe during WWII. *But the really impressive thing was the many retired commercial jets for NW Airlines. They were sitting side by side, with their engines removed, but they still had the NW Airlines logos on their tails. There are still a few of those planes still there. **And, I think the old NW Airlines logo was the most perfect logo ever for an English speaking audience. Recall, it had a circle representing a compass, and an italicized N which had a little compass point, pointing in the NW direction, which made the N into a W. Whomever thought of that was an advertising genius.
Thanks for sharing your memories of the airport and airline logo with us.👍
These old southern towns were booming (economically) at one time, what they have become is a shame. I lived next door in Laurinburg from '92 until 2000, its a different place now, thanks in part, to NAFTA.
I agree. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I grew up in Maxton, I graduated from Maxton High School in 1980 and moved to Raleigh, NC. Maxton was full of life when I was growing up. Most of the jobs in the area were industrial or manufacturing. Once the manufacturing plants closed the town started to slowly go down. The only plant we have in Maxton now is Campbell Soup. And in 1983 they demolished our high school and left the gym standing. They didn't rebuild our high school but assigned students to attend West Robeson High School which is now called Pernell Swett. There were a few other towns in the area that had their schools closed and consolidated and students were assigned to go to Pernell Swett or other schools. It seemed like after the school closed the community wasn't the same. We used to have football and basketball games and parades. We even won the State Championship in 1975 in football.
We don't even have a middle school anymore only an elementary school. Whenever I go to Maxton now it's like a ghost town. A lot of abandon houses. But I think our little town does have potential we are only 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Myrtle Beach. That would be a way to bring money into the town.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Hopefully the town can rebound so other generation can have great memories like yours.👍
My father was from Maxton, I used to love going down to see my uncles and aunts as a kid. There's still so much potential in the town... and life left in those old buildings ❤️💫
@mstreemoon8117 Thanks for sharing. I believe there is a future for the town center buildings.
i love how theres trains every second in this town
Definitely a train town 👍
@@TimothyFrench like every single time i've been there its been train noises and trains moving around
It's a unique beautiful town with a lot of potential.
It does. I hope to see it make a comeback 👍
Hometown😅
IDK who you are dude.. But your voice.. You sound so much like my brother it's kinda weirding me out.. Also, our father and his family were from Maxton and surrounding area. We spent some summers there when we were kids. So sad to see all those building abandoned that way. It was such a cute town. But from what I've seen in the news lately, it's gonna be hard to attract businesses when the crime has gotten so bad 😔. ❤️💫
I’ve had people say I look like someone they know, but never that I sound like someone else. That’s a first.😃
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the town.👍
Iam from laurinburg but i use to stay in the house on 74 right before you get in town beside south eastern haulers, they tour it down now theres a trailor there but anyway iam from around there
Thanks for sharing 👍
Yeeaaa I use to live there.. and I would not go back
My home town..😅
Maxton leaves a lot to be desired and has potential but needs a lot of work and some revenue.
I agree. i hope they can turn things around. They had a beautiful town center and can have on again.👍
lived there 2001 till 2021..murders n bodys found dead all the time..broke into 3 times.. had loaded guns in every room... now glade l left in 2021...now I live free in wi..
That’s what I’m looking to see. My son lives in Fayetteville and granddaughter thinking of moving near and the Campbell Business a possible job opportunity but do not want high crime!
@@missionaries7575oh my gosh......do not move anywhere near Maxton......there has been so so many gruesome murders there...stay far away.
You ain't neva lied!! Crime rate comparable to inner city crime like Chicago or Detroit.
I do
I've lived in alot of places Baltimore MD San Jose called even Arkansas west Virginia..the worst place I've ever had to live at was maxton nc.i know why Noone wanted to ever go there when I was in school.its full of nothing but trash.
I hearing this town is maybe cursed.
I’ve never heard that. But if you find a story about it, let us know. I like ghost stories and cursed stories alike. And I’ll see what I can find as well.
Either way I liked Maxton.
There was a Republican governor named Daniel L. Russell who was NC Governor around 1900. He was from Wilmington, and once he was riding the train down to Wilmington from Raleigh. A KKK type group (I think they were called something like the Maxton Red Raiders.) planned to board the train and kidnap Governor Russell, and perhaps even kill him, but he got off the train one stop earlier than he normally did and they missed him.
Wow Edward...do tell us more.
Don’t look good, to bad they can use the old buildings
